Carina Cellars has evolved steadily since its inception. The
boutique winery bottled about 2,000 cases in 2002. That number
grew to 4,000 in 2006.
A dynamic future awaits.
“We are in a growing mode,” said Brownell, pointing out distri-
bution of Carina wines encompasses California and a number of
select states nationwide.
“We are doing great. It’s time to take the next steps.”
Hardee purchased an 83-acre ranch on Paso Robles’ Westside
and has planted 16 acres, with plans for a winery and tasting room
at the Adelaida Road site already drawn up.
He also envisions a network of caves and was recently in Napa
investigating the caves at wineries there.
The Paso Robles site is now planted to Syrah, Mourvedre and
Grenache.
Even though those vines won’t be productive for another few
years, fruit from a nearby vineyard are being used this year to make
a Zinfandel, said Tensley.
Hardee decided to start making some wine using grapes from
Paso Robles, said Tensley, to “get accustomed with the area.”
The Carina Cellars tasting room is in downtown Los Olivos at

Growing up in the lower east side of Manhattan Island, Warren
Frankel never imagined that he would one day be a grape grower,
raising a family and building a medical practice in the oak-covered
rolling hills of Paso Robles, California. It was after 25 years of
schooling and medical studies that Warren began to sense the yearn-

After opening his medical practice in the San Fernando Valley in
Southern California he began to take his desire for a simpler and more

Wineology INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER
by Len Napolitano

How do I learn to appreciate wine?

R Recently, a friend of mine admitted that he knows nothing about wine or what makes
one wine better than another. He was clearly frustrated that he could not communi-
cate exactly what it is he likes or dislikes in a wine. When he tastes something that
he does find appealing, the only descriptive word he can conjure up is “smooth.”
I explained that learning to appreciate fine wine is a process that can take years.
The good news is that it involves tasting a great number of wines. Unfortunately for
him, he simply didn’t drink wine often enough to build a mental database of wines
and their flavor profiles to draw comparisons among wines.
The first requirement of a fine wine is to be true to the grape varietal and a key
aspect in the appreciation of fine wine is learning to identify the characteristic flavors
and components in the popular varietals – the individual fruit flavors, level of sweet-
ness, acidity or tannin. Over time, you learn what to expect from a Cabernet Sauvi-
gnon versus a Pinot Noir, for example. And evaluating how they all play out on your
palate is part of this step.
Once you get comfortable with identifying varietal flavors and components, teach
yourself to think about the wine’s individual personality, or style. When tasting, keep
in mind contrasting descriptions like these; balanced or unbalanced components,
lingering finish or short finish, powerful or bland, lively or dull, complex or one-
dimensional, elegant or plain, and don’t forget, – smooth or coarse. Ask yourself if
any of these words describe the wine’s style, or think of some of your own.
Send your questions about wine to:

Paso Robles WestFest 2007

WestFest 2007 is the fourth annual Wine and Blues Festival, with
major sponsorship from Hampton Inns and Suites, Grapeline Express,
Canyon Villa Bed & Breakfast, and Farm Credit West, Fog Catcher Inn
O
CALIF RNIA and Best Western Fireside Inn, which is produced by the Hwy 46 West

46 Wineries in Paso Robles, California. The event this year will be held
Saturday, September 8th at Peachy Canyon Winery located off of
Highway 46 West on Bethel Road. Your ticket entitles you to wine club
discounts at all participating wineries for the entire weekend, and
WEST admission to the festival to hear Rockin’ Blues. The centerpiece of the
weekend is the festival where each winery will pour their award-
winning wines. Your ticket also becomes your raffle number for great
gifts including two six-liter wine bottles etched and hand-painted with
the WestFest logo. Over three hundred guests coming from as far away
as Washington State attended the first annual event. The event has
limited seating and tickets are sold in advance by the participating
wineries. Time, price, food and entertainment to be announced.
About Highway 46 West Wineries Group
In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the
Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote
the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware
of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso
Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have
dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine
wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often
marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an
area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where
being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines.
Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and
wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers.
Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at
every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy
our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment
and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines.
The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars,
Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli
Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars,
Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all
included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the
Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like
a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery.
Once you get seven stamps you will receive a beautifully designed
poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is
full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all
of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from
a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided
tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events
such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big
event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great
wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food
