NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

ECE 452/592-07

Term Project Guidelines

S 12

There two prototype applications for the project. App PV: Design a PV system to be placed on the roof of a residential/commercial premise. App WG: Design a wind turbine to harness the wind energy at a given location. Only one turbine is to be installed by a utility customer on his premise. You can pick either of the applications. The main goal is to explore alternatives and identify a system which is economically most attractive. Projects can be done individually, or as a team of two, one 452 and one 592. Teams need to choose one of the 592 options. For ECE 452: The project will involve: i) Choose the premise, its location and size. ii) Do a web search to find data about the renewable resource at the location you have chosen. The data should be detailed enough for a good design. iii) Using this data, do a preliminary design to determine and size the system components. For the PV system, consider a utility connected system. iv) Do a web search to determine the actual components that are available and best meet your design. To be able to compare alternatives chose at least two candidates. v) Finalize the design by doing a detailed economic assessment of the project. For this, you may need to select more than one design option to determine the best design. The study should have both the energy output estimate and a cost estimate components. vi) A well documented report showing the detail of design and component selection. For ECE 592: Two options: Option 1: Pick one of the prototype applications. For the PV system, the design should be an off the grid application. i) Perform the design steps outlined for ECE452. ii) Verify your design by simulating the system. Simulate the system in Matlab using a basic dynamic model of the system. Perform simulations to tune the controls and verify the basic system performance, such as tracking ability as the input changes, and performance at different input levels. iii) A well documented report showing the detail of design, component selection, and simulation model and tests done to assess the design. Option 2: Find a publication related to renewable energy generation and replicate its approach. You need to discuss with the instructor about the scope in this case and get his approval. Guidelines for Simulations:
For both PV and Wind turbines, you will be given Simulink models. The main tasks we ask you to do: i) Adjust the main component parameters (such as power rating of PV or WindTurbine ) based on your design.

This is typically the data you enter via the block parameters in matlab blocks which model main components such as PV module of Wind Turbine. ii) Simulate the system under a typical daily Insolation or wind profile This should verify that the system produces the power you designed for and more importantly the controllers work properly under these operating conditions. ii) For Wind System you can use the simulation to determine the power ratings of the converters. For Wind system there is a good explanation for the turbine model which you can get through help on Matlab.
