Passage 1 Petikan 1 One evening, Muthu and his friends went fishing at the river behind his house.

They brought along their fishing rods, a pail and a tin of worms. When they reached the river, they found a spot under a shady tree and put their things there. Suddenly, they heard someone shouting for help. They looked around and saw a boy struggling in the water. Immediately, Muthu jumped into the river and dragged the boy towards the bank of the river. Muthu recognized the boy because he is his neighbours son. He carried the boy and rushed to his neighbours home. Luckily, the boy was safe. Muthus neighbour thanked him and his two friends for saving his sons life. Even though Muthu and his friends did not fish that day, they were glad that they had done a good deed.

Nama aku Acer. Aku ialah sebuah komputer riba. Tubuh mongelku diperbuat daripada plastik, aluminium, besi dan kaca. Aku dilahirkan DVD, papan kekunci dan infra merah,aku dimasukkan ke dalam kotak. Aku dan rakan-rakanku sedia untuk dipasarkan. Kami melangkah dengan perasaan sebak meninggalkan tempat kammi dilahirkan dengan menaiki sebuah lori. Perjalanan dari utara menuju ke selatan itu sangat jauh dan membosankan. Akhirnya aku tiba di sebua kedai komputer di Muar, Johor. Di sana, aku dipamerkan bersama-sama rakan yang lain seperti Dell, Asus dan Toshiba. Aku berasa seronok berjumpa dengan rakan-rakan baru. Baru tiga hari dipamerkan, aku sudah dilamar seseorang. Daripada perbualan mereka, aku terdengar tuan baruku seorang pensyarah. Tuan baruku membeli aku dengan harga RM 2 950.00 secara bayaran tunai. Kini, aku tinggal bersama-sama tuanku di sebuah rumah teres dua tingkat. Aku digunakan untuk membuat tugasan dan kerja-kerja pengajarannya. Hampir setiap hari aku digunakan untuk membuat kerja-kerja mengajar tuanku. Masa berlalu begitu cepat. Kini , sudah tiga tahun aku berbakti kepada tuanku. Aku berasa bersyukur kerana aku masih disayangi dan digunakan sepanjang masa.

One morning, Mrs Siva wanted to buy some groceries. She drove her car to a grocery nearby and parked her car opposite the shop. Suddenly, a man on a motorcycle snatched her handbag from behind. Mrs Siva was shocked and she screamed for help. She could not see the mans face because he sped off on his motorcycle. Mrs Siva was feeling very disappointed. Nobody was willing to give her a hand even though they were nearby and witnessed the incident. Mrs Siva went to the police station to make a report. The policeman assured her that the police would investigate into the matter.

KELAWAR YANG SOMBONG Pada suatu hari, helang, iaitu raja segala burung, ternampak seekor kelawar yang kecil sedang menangis. Mengapakah kamu menangis? Tanya helang. Kelawar memberitahu helang dia berasa sangat sejuk. Burung-burung lain tidak berasa sejuk hari ini. Apakah yang tidak kena dengan kamu? Tanya helang lagi. Kelawar berkata, Mereka berasa panas kerana mereka mempunyai bulu. Aku hanya ada rambut yang pendek! Helang ppun memanggil semua burung berkumpul. Mereka terbang datang dari merata arah. Apabila semua burung berkumpul, helang pun berkata,Aku mahu setiap daripada kamu memberikan sehelai bulu kepada kelawar ini. Maka setiap burung memberikan sehelai bulu kepada kelawar. Bulu yang berwarna-warni itu menjadikan kelawar kelihatan sangat cantik. Kelawar kemudian berasa sangat bangga dengan bulu-bulunya. Dia berasa dirinya lebih cantik daripada burung-burung lain. Burung-burung pergi berjumpa raja mereka. Mereka mengadu bahawa kelawar sekarang terlalu sombong untuk bercakap dengan mereka. Helang menyuru kelawar berjumpanya dan bertanya, Adakah benar kamu tidak bercakap dengan burung-burung lain? Tengoklah saya! kata kelawar.Aku terlalu cantik sedangkan mereka semua nampak biasa. Ya, kamu nampak cantik, kata helang. Sekarang aku benarkan mereka mengambil balik bulu mereka! Semua burung datang mencabut bulu mereka dari badan kelawar. Selepas itu, kelawar tidak mempunyai bulu lagi. Kelawar berasa sangat malu sehinggakan sejak hari itu, dia menyembunyikan diri di dalam gua dan hanya keluar pada waktu malam.

The eagle, who is king of all birds, one day saw a little grey bat crying. Why are you crying? the eagle asked. The bat told him that she was very cold. The other birds do not feel cold today. What is wrong with you ? asked the eagle. The bat said, They are warm because they have feathers. I only have a few hairs! The king of birds called all the birds together. They flew on from all directions. When the birds had gathered around, the eagle said, I want each of you to give a feather to this bat. So each bird gave the bat a feather. The colorful feathers made the bat look very beautiful. The bat soon became very proud of her feathers. She felt she was better than the other birds. The birds went to see their king. They told him that the bat was now too proud to talk to them. The eagle sent for the bat and asked her, Is it true that you dont talk to the others? Just look at me! said the bat. I am so beautiful and they are all so plain. Yes, you look very pretty, Said the eagle. So now I will let them take back their feathers! All the birds came and plucked their feathers from the bat. Soon the bat had no feathers at all. The bat was so ashamed that, from that day on, she hid in her cave each day and only came out at night. Moral: Be kind to the people who help you.
