HSC Chemistry Your name Date of prac

Prac #1: title of prac here

Aim: (One sentence outlining what you want to do in your experiment: e.g. to investigate the boiling point of a solution of salt). Hypothesis: (What you think will happen. This must be written as an IF/THEN statement. E.g. IF salt is added to water, THEN the boiling point of the solution will be greater than 100C). Risk assessment: Risk Potential harm Strategies to minimise risk

Variables: Independent: (independent) Dependent: Controlled: Method: (Step wise method goes here. It should be written in past tense, in passive voice and be correct, specific and concise. Specify significant figures and units when mentioning quantities. E.g. 5.00 g (3 s.f.) of the solute was dissolved in 100.0 mL (4 s.f) of solvent). Diagram: (Hand drawn, labelled, pencil diagram goes here if relevant). Equation: (Place balanced equation of the relevant reaction here. Ensure the equation is balanced with correct subscripts). (dependent) (a minimum of two controlled variables)

Calculations: (Insert calculations, if relevant, here. This might be calculation of the molarity of a solution, etc. Ensure you use correct significant figures with correct units. Its probably easier to do this by hand.) Results: (Qualitative observations go here: e.g. the solution turned green). (Results table here: can write in by hand or using word) (Place graph here: this MUST be a hand drawn PENCIL and RULER graph)

Discussion: You may structure your discussion with subheadings to address these points: Analysis of results

TRENDS: Example from a prac of boiling water: the temperature of the water increased from 25 C to 100C from 0 minutes to 8 minutes. Was this trend expected? Based on what? This trend was expected based on knowledge of energy flowing from the bunsen flame to the water. Suitability of the experimental design: was the method good enough? You must provide reasons WHY and WHY NOT the experiment was valid Identify the controlled variables and how you controlled them. Were they controlled well, or not? Did your results answer the aim of the experiment?

Validity o

Reliability o You must provide reasons WHY and WHY NOT the results were reliable Did you get the same results after repetition? Were there any out-lying scores? Was the data averaged? Was the data compared with other groups?

Accuracy o Did your results agree with other groups, or literature values? Did you choose the most appropriate apparatus to increase accuracy? Did you record the error margins for each piece of equipment (record significant figures)? Would you make any improvements? Precision o o o

Conclusion: (Write a brief (2 sentence) conclusion which answers the aim. Quantify this with evidence. E.g. The boiling point of a salt solution was determined to be 103 C.)
