The Good Things about Stress Good morning ladies and gentleman. My name is Sofiyantini, and in this opportunity I would like to tell you about the good things about stress. Everybody should experience about stress. We always think that stress is such a pain or a disease for our mind. But, a medical director of the national Fatigue Center, Jacob Teitelbaum said, Stress is a very healthy thing, because it gives you the energy you need to live life. Without it, you wouldn't have the energy you need to take action. Does everyone know that stress can be good? Some people might disagree with this thought because they think that good stress does not exist. People will come out with questions on their heads. How could stress is good in this life? What are the good things about stress? Now, I divided the good things of stress into three parts. There are good things for our brain, for immune system and to prevent from illnesses, and for living the life. First, I would like to explain about the good things of stress for our brain. Stress helps us to enhance memories in our mind. Maybe youve ever feel your mind is in super-aware condition. It is a rush to the prefrontal cortex. Prefrontal cortex means hormones to the brain region important that controlling cognition and emotion. It helps you to boost working of your memory in problem solving and processing sensory information. Also, it helps the key brain receptors that are essential to figure out the task at hand. Next, stress can increase brain power. When faced with real physical threats we need to have a heightened awareness and ability to deal with the crisis. So, actually, when we feel stress, we will become more aware and improve our attention to a threat that causes stress. Second, I would like to tell you the good things about stress for immune system and to prevent from illnesses. We often think that when we stress, our body will become weak and easy to get sick. But, actually stress helps us to prevent cold and flu. Like I said before, when we stress, we will become more aware of something, so does our body. Our body will keep us work overtime well when we are in a deadline pressure. That is because stress is helpful to turn back our immune to fight off viruses and bacteria. It is because there is a stress-regulating on adrenal glands that balance immunity. In Indonesia, adrenal gland means kelenjar adrenalin. The adrenal glands release cortisol to response physical or emotional stress to become energy that reserves and resist infection. Next is stress helps us to fight skin cancer or tumor. Stress triggers us to express more immune-activating genes and direct more immune cells to tumor or cancer to help suppress tumor or cancer growth. The last of the good things about stress is for living the life. Stress can boost your resiliency. Resiliency means that you recover from something unpleasant such as, shock or injury. Some researchers say that people who ever faced stress are stronger than people who never face problem which is stressing. A professor from University of Buffalo said that having to deal with challenges may toughen us up. In other words, stress can make us stronger. Next, stress

helps us to grow by enriching our lives or challenging us to reach our potential. All of the life challenges can help us to feel successful. Now, in this last section, I will sum up the main points of the good things about stress. The first is for brain: enhance memories and increase brain power. The second is for immune system and to prevent illnesses: help to prevent cold and flu and fight skin cancer or tumor. The third is for living the life: boost our resiliency and help us to grow. Youve seen that stress is not bad at all. You should acknowledge that stress can be healthy for you in certain ways.
