A Quick Advice for You

Did you know?
One day we shall all die and all the things we have in this world right now will no longer be of any use to us. Whether you are rich or poor it wont make any difference. The only thing that will matter after you die is how you lived your life. Will the Lord find you worthy enough to live the rest of eternity with him? Will your name be found in the Book of Life?

Do you believe in God? Do you Go To Church? Do you Read the Holy Bible?
If you do not then you should. No matter what the situation in your life looks like right now, please do not let it distract you from the things that truly matter in the long run. The Lord knows everything and He will make all things perfect in His time. If He saved my partner and I and rescued us from unemployment then He can and will do the same for you.

Please pray this short prayer now:

Lord God Almighty, thank you for giving me this opportunity to make things right with you. I am very sorry for all my sins and promise to change for the better from today. I believe that you are my Creator and that you sent your Son Jesus Christ to die for my sins. I believe that by His death He washed away my sins and saved me. Lord Jesus Christ today I open the door of my heart and invite you to come in and be the Lord of my life. I hand over all my worries and burdens to you. Thank you for saving me. May your Holy name be praised forever. Amen If you just prayed the above prayer then please look for a good Bible believing Church and start attending daily or weekly services if you were not attending before. Also read the Holy Bible regularly and get baptized (if you arent already). All praise and glory be to Jehovah Yahweh God Almighty for the knowledge and inspiration HE gave us to write this guide. He is The Beginning and the End of All things, the Almighty KING and the Creator of Heaven and Earth and His NAME is above any other name on Earth and in Heaven. All Praise and Glory to His Son Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World (Mai Cheton duniya). May God bless you as you read this guide.

Why Did We Write this e-Book?

In 2010, we revealed for the very first time that we were making N225,000 every month from our internet businesses. Ever since that revelation, we have been inundated with questions and pleas from our more than 200,000 subscribers regarding how we were doing it. The most common questions we were being asked was how to start making money online in Nigeria and how to build a website. After starting our new company NG44 Consulting in May 2011, we started a corporate social responsibility drive that led us to create some free packages to address these two questions. One of these packages is this e-book which you are now reading while another package is our free 7 Day e-mail course on introduction to online business. (If you have not yet taken that free e-course, kindly visit www.ng44.com/freecourse right now to claim your free spot before the training ends)

Why Are We Giving it Away?

Running a job website has shown to us the dire state and desperation facing millions of Nigerian families, youths and graduates today due to the horrible unemployment crisis in the nation. Because we have been through the same suffering and pain, we know what it feels like and we are trying our best to see how we can help out by contributing our own little quota. Just as we have been able to build a regular income stream and gain financial independence from doing online business, it is our desire that as much people as possible learn this skill so that they too can be empowered to free themselves from the bondage of financial lack by becoming self reliant. We are therefore giving away this guide because we want as much people as possible to have this knowledge and we encourage them to make use of it how best they can. We wish you success in all your endeavours. Enjoy

Introduction
In the previous Lesson, we mentioned that before a website can appear on the Internet you need to have two things in place: a domain name and a web host. Once you have a domain name and web host, the next thing is to design your website and host it with the web host. This Lesson is the second in a series of 4 Lessons in this course that deal with website design. In this Lesson, we shall look at how to register a domain name and buy web hosting for the paid method of getting a website. In the Lesson after this one, we shall learn about how to build and design an actual paid website using Wordpress and in the last Lesson of the 4-Lesson series, we shall learn how to build free websites.

Steps to Getting a Paid Website

There are four key steps to getting a paid website: 1. Decide on a name and search for the domain to see if it is available 2. If the domain name is available, register it 3. Buy a web hosting account for the name and link it to the hosting account using the nameservers 4. Install, Build and Configure the Website

Pick a Domain Name

A domain name is the name that someone types into the browser when they want to visit your website. A domain name is also known as the website address. For example, the domain name of our companys website is www.ng44.com The name of your website is its unique identifier. There are rules guiding the type of names that should be used for online business websites; these shall be discussed in more detail in later Lessons. If this is your first time of reading this Lesson and you

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 11

do not already have a domain name before, you should register one now so that you will have something to practice with. If you do not already have a name in mind, take a moment to think about what you want to name your first website. It could be your company name or your own name. Even if you do not have a company yet, you should know that you are in business now and very soon your online business will grow into a large thriving company so if you do not already have a company name in mind then you should start thinking of one right now.

Examples: Innovationtech, Markdigitalng, Ogbconsult, deltatrixltd, kerabytenigeria, kenalissa

Take your time and dont rush yourself. The name must not be too long, should be easy to pronounce and easy to remember with as few syllables as possible. The website that you register in this Lesson will serve as a test bed for practicing the exercises and examples contained in this course. When you have finished practicing you can then convert the site back to your official corporate website just as we have done at www.ng44.com or to your personal blog.

Is the Name Still Available?

When you have decided on a name, the next thing is to check to see if it is still available or if it has already been registered by someone else before. Note that many of the common names that you can think of have already been registered by people so you should try and be innovative when picking a name. If the original name that you wanted has been taken, you can try adding numbers or ng or ngr or ltd or using a to separate the words of the name and then search again or you can select a new name entirely.

Examples: digitalmarket, digitalmarketng, digitalmarketltd, digital-market, ngrdigitalmarket etc

To check if a name is available, go to www.m.ng44.com/namecheap

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 12

Enter the domain name that you want to check (without the .com), for example if you want to register www.kenalissa.com, enter just kenalissa without the www in front and without the .com at the end then click on Search.

Tip: The .com or .net or .anything part of a domain name is called the Top Level Domain or TLD. To search for multiple Top Level Domains for a single name at once, click inside the red box as indicated below to reveal more options for multiple selections.

Next, select the checkboxes beside all the TLDs that you want to simultaneously search for and click on Search.

If the name is still available then you are lucky.

You may now proceed to do the actual registration of the domain. If it is not available then you will have to repeat the search to find one which is available or pick from the alternative options that will also be displayed.

How to Register a Domain Name

Structure of a Domain Name and How it Works
Recall that you need both a domain name and web hosting for your website to be visible and accessible to other people on the Internet. A majority of web hosting companies offer both domain name and hosting services as one bundle. In fact, many web hosts will offer to register a domain name for you for free as an added bonus and incentive for purchasing their hosting plans. While this sort of bundled arrangement can be convenient at times, we usually do not recommend it for the following reason: When most of these hosting companies offer to register a domain name for you as a free bonus, what they would normally do is to register that domain name using their own details. The implication of this is that, technically, the domain does not really belong to you but belongs to that company since it was registered in their name and not yours. If at any time in the future you now wish to have that domains ownership fully transferred to you, these companies will charge you an exorbitant fee (sometimes up to $250) just to change the ownership details from their name to yours. It is for this reason that we recommend that you register your domain name by yourself, buy hosting separately and then link the domain to the host. Doing this will ensure that the domain name is registered in your own name and that you retain ownership for as long as you continue to renew the yearly registration. Provided the registration details are in your name and you have access to the control panel for the name, you can be rest assured that that name will belong to you for life provided you renew it as and when due.

What are Domain Registrars?

To register a new domain name, you need to go through a middle man known as a registrar. This middle man which will normally be a company, is accredited to register your name with ICANN, the world body responsible for controlling domain names. ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (www.icann.org). There are very many domain registrars and sub-registrars available on the Internet but not all of them are reliable enough. While some of them accept Nigerian credit cards, many others do not. And while the websites of some are simple to use, those of others are more complicated. Examples of some good domain name registrars are Go Daddy, NameCheap, Register, Domain.com and a host of others. Although Go Daddy has one of the cheapest prices, we do not recommend them for beginners because their website can be a bit difficult and confusing. In this lesson, we shall explain how to register a domain name using Name Cheap because their website is very user friendly. As of the time of writing this book, the cost of a .com domain name from NameCheap is about $10 dollars.

Steps to Register a Domain Name with Name Cheap

Step 1: Go to www.m.ng44.com/namecheap

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 15

Step 2: Select a Name: Enter the domain name that you want to register (without the .com), for example if you want to register www.kenalissa.com, enter just kenalissa without the www in front and without the .com at the end then click on Search.

If the name you entered is still available, you will get a message that tells you so. Below that message you will also see other suggestions of similar names but with different TLDs e.g if you search for the .com version, you will also see suggestions for other TLDs like .co, .me, .net, .org etc. Ignore those for now and click on the Add to Cart button.

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 16

Hint: The .com or .net or .anything part of a domain name is called the Top Level Domain or TLD.

Tip: The Add to Cart button is short for Add to Shopping Cart. When making purchases and payments online, the common procedure is to first add the items you want to buy to a shopping cart. Think of the shopping cart as the basket (or cart) used to gather the things that you want to buy when you go to a real life supermarket. In a real world supermarket, after adding everything that you want to buy to the cart, you can then go to the counter and pay for those items. In the same way, after adding items to an online shopping cart, you can then proceed to checkout. Checkout is the point where you are asked to enter your card details for payment.

If you are unlucky and the name you searched for has already been registered by someone else, you will see a message that says the name is not available and below that message, some suggestions of other similar names but on different TLDs. Take note of the prices quoted to the right of the available suggested names because not all domain names are of the same price, especially if they are special or popular names.

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 17

For example, in the following screenshot, notice the difference in prices between vanguardngr.me ($7.49/yr) and vanguardngr.cm ($98.00/yr) r)

In the event that you want to additionally register any of these other suggested names, click on the check box to the left of the name and then click on Add to Cart.

But if you do not want to register any of the suggested names, then search again by suggested repeating Step 2. Keep doing this until you find a name that is available and then you

Register for Free Online Business e Lectures at: e-Lectures www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5. can click on Add to Cart and move on to the next step

P a g e | 18

Caution: It is widely believed that .com names have a better standing than most of the other TLDs. Although theres really no concrete proof of this, we recommend that you always try to get the .com version of any name that you want to register and only if it is not available should you try another TLD or better still, another name. In later Lessons, we shall look in more detail at instances where you could consider other TLDs if the .com version of the name that you want is not available.

Step 3: Create a NameCheap Account or Login After clicking on Add to Cart, you will be presented with the new account creation and login form.

If you have already created an account before, enter your username and password in the blue box on the right hand side and click on Login. But if you have not created an account before, fill out the form on the left, make sure that the checkbox indicated by the arrow is selected and then click on Create an Account.

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 19

Tip: Username is the name that you will be using to log in. You can use your company name e.g ngtech or pananetworks or something more pers personal like stellasylvia or diamondojo. Just make . sure it is one word and has no spaces.

When you are entering your password, you will be notified if the password is weak or not.

For greater security, it is advisable to add a number or numbers to the password that you chose e.g. favored12. Click on Create Account and your account will be created. You will also be automatically logged in to the new account control panel and at the same time sent a same welcome email at the email address you entered. Now, the first time that you log in to your account, you will be prompted to enter your contact details. Enter your name and address and other details in the given fields. These details are added to your profile information and used whenever you ded register new domains. They can be changed or modified at any time.

Organisation Name, Address 2 and Fax Number are optional so if you like you can leave them blank. For Zip/Postal Code, use any six digit number like 300001. Under Phone Number, select +234 in the first field and then in the next field, type in your number without the first digit or leading zero. For example if your number is 081983877372, type in 81983877372 in the middle field. Leave the last field blank (unless your number has an extension).

Tip: In an online form, the individual boxes or spaces that you are required to fill something into are known as Fields.

After filling the form, check through it again to make sure that all the details you entered are correct, then click on Save and Continue

Next you will be required to enter contact addresses for four different contact groups: Registrant contact, Administrative contact, Technical contact and Billing contact. The registrant contact is the contact of the actual licensed owner of the domain name and also the entity who has the legal powers to maintain, transfer or delete the name. This entity is known as the registrant. The administrative contact is the person assigned by the registrant to manage the domain ownership and other issues. The

P a g e | 21

Technical contact is the person in charge of all the technical aspects of managing the domain while the Billing contact is the one in charge of billing. For a big company, each of these contacts could be different, but since you are the only one, you can make all the contacts to be the same as yours. You will notice that all the fields have already been pre-filled with the information that you supplied earlier on so just make sure everything is correct and then click on Next Step (under Checkout) as indicated in the next screenshot. You will also notice that if you did not enter any Fax number, what will be displayed is +15555555555. Leave it like that, it doesnt matter.

If you wish to pay with a card belonging to someone else then you should change the details under Billing contact to the card owners details and make sure that the First Name and Last Name match those of the card holder. At this point you can also make any changes to the addresses. A fast way to do this is to change only the address under Registrant contact and then for the others, just click Copy Information from Registrant Contact and when you are done, click on Copy Contact Next Step.

Step 4: Enable WhoisGuard and Enter Nameservers : The new screen will allow you to select WhoisGuard protection for your domain and to also enter the nameserver information that was given to you by Hostgator (or any other host that you are using). hat The nameserver or DNS is the thing that links your domain name to your web hosting account. You can find it in the welcome email that was sent to you when you purchased the hosting plan for the domain. We shall learn more about nameser nameservers when in the section on buying hosting.

Tip: WhoisGuard is a paid service that will hide your Registrant and other details from the public. It is given as a one year free bonus when you register a new name through NameCheap.

uard Select the Enable WhoisGuard checkbox and under Nameserver Settings select Use Custom Nameservers and enter the nameservers given to you by your host. When you have done this, click on Next Step

Warning: The Nameserver information is the crucial aspect that ties your domain name to your name hosting account. A mistake here can create problems with your website so make sure that the nameservers you enter here are exactly the same as the ones given to you by your host. To make sure that there are no mistakes, you can go back to the hosts welcome email and copy it directly hosts from there.

If you do not yet have the nameserver information for your hosting plan, you can leave it as the first option (use our free nameservers) but you must come back to change it here before after registering the domain. If you do not change the nameserver to that given to you by your host then your domain name will not be linked to your host.

On the next screen you will see the total amount that you will be charged for the purchase that you are making. Check to make sure everything is in order and then click on Pay with Credit Card

Step 5: Enter your Billing information If you are using the Zenith websurfer card, select Mastercard under Credit card type but if you are using another, select the appropriate type of card. Enter the other details into the form correctly. Make sure that the name and address that you are using tallies with those of the card that you are using to pay and also with those that you submitted earlier on under Billing Contact.

This is also a confirmation that you have successfully registered your domain name. Congrats!!! As further confirmation, you will also receive an email from Namecheap confirming your successful order and another email from websurfer telling you that your card has been charged.

If on the other hand your card was not billed, you will get an error message and you will need to double-check that the details that you entered were correct or repeat the entire process with another card.

How to Buy a Web Hosting Account

After searching for the domain name that you want and confirming that it is still available, the next step is to buy hosting using that name before going on to register the domain itself. Actually it is not always necessary that you must buy hosting first before registering the domain name but if this is your first time then it is advisable to buy the hosting first so that you can better understand how the whole process works. Two of the most common terms used in web hosting are storage space and bandwidth. Storage space is measured in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB) and indicates the maximum size of your websites files and other data that can be stored on the hosting account. For an online business website, anything above 100MB is enough to start. Bandwidth is measured in Megabytes, Gigabytes or Terabytes (TB) and is calculated on a monthly basis. The size of your bandwidth affects how many visitors your website can handle in a month. You can start off with a plan of at least 3 to 5 GB bandwidth and as your site grows you can upgrade to higher plans.

Approximately: 1, 000 Kilobytes (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB) 1,000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB) 1,000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte (TB)

When specifying the bandwidth, the fact that it is calculated monthly is not always indicated but the generally accepted norm is that any figure given for bandwidth is usually on a per month basis, whether it is indicated there or not. Therefore, if you see a bandwidth of 500GB, what it really means is 500GB per month.

Types and Cost of Web Hosting

A company that offers web hosting is known as a webhost. There are very many different web hosts available on the Internet (both Nigerian and foreign). Each of these companies has its own set of packages with different capacities. There are three main types of web hosting server setups and their costs range from cheap to expensive depending on how much traffic your website gets. The more

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 28

traffic a website has the more resources and bandwidth it will consume from the hosting server, hence when your website has grown to a certain stage, your host will ask you to upgrade from one setup to a higher one. The three major types of webhosting server plans are: Shared hosting: 100+ people on one server cheapest, for small websites Virtual Private Server: About 10 to 25 people share one server Dedicated Server: One person to his own server. Most expensive. For very high traffic websites.

Web hosting can also be categorized according to the operating system of the server. The two types are: Windows Server Linux Server

Linux servers are more popular because most of the best online software and applications can only work with Linux servers. Therefore, everything contained in this book is centered around Linux servers and whenever you want to buy a host always buy Linux hosting. For most webhosts, payment can be made either on a yearly basis or monthly, quarterly (every 3 months) or biennial (every 6 months) billing cycle. Usually the longer the billing cycle, the less you have to pay per month. For instance, some hosts will offer discounts when you pay for six months at once or a full year. Some even go further to offer special discounts for multiple year registrations. When selecting a host, you have the choice to go with a Nigerian hosting company or a foreign one. Nigerian hosts tend to be cheaper than foreign hosts and for people living in Nigeria it is usually easier to pay to them because you can make deposits into their Nigerian account, unlike the foreign hosts where you need to have a debit or credit card like Websurfer or other Mastercard and Visa branded cards. With the best foreign hosts, a standard shared hosting plan normally costs around $90 to $120 per year (about N16,000 to N20,000). This, however, is not the cheapest plan available. Some Nigerian hosts actually have cheaper plans starting from N1,000 but with far fewer features than the foreign standard plan. If you live in Nigeria you can start with the much cheaper Nigerian hosts but there will come a time when your business has grown so much that you will need the extra

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 29

features that only the foreign hosts can offer. Some examples of reputable foreign hosts are HostGator, Bluehost, Dreamhost, Netfirms, Siteground etc. Some reputable Nigerian hosts are WhoGoHost, Web4Africa and Syskay. For starters, we recommend that you go with the Nigerian hosting company called Whogohost because their services are good and they have very affordable and pocket friendly plans suitable for beginners like you.

Steps to Buy a Hosting Plan from WhoGoHost

Step 1: Visit the WhoGoHost website. Go to their website at www.m.ng44.com/whogohost and click on Hosting Plans.

The company has various hosting packages but the one we recommend is the Premier package indicated below. With this package, you can do most of the things mentioned in this book. A look down each column lists the technical specifications of each of the packages named at the top.

As of the time of writing this book, the Premier package cost N4,000 a year. If this is 4,000 too much for you to afford, you can go for the Aspire package which is one step lower for than the Premier package and costs even less ( 2,500 as of the time of writing). We (N2,500 do not advise the cheapest package which is Basic because it is much too restrictive even for beginners. tom Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the order now link below the package that you have selected.

Regarding the domain name registration, the Premier and Aspire packages have the option to register a domain name for you for free for the first one year. Although this option is cheaper and less complicated for beginners, we do not recommend it because of reasons explained earlier under the section on registering domain names. If you have already registered your domain name with Namecheap, select the option I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers as indicated below:

A new field appears below the option into which you are to enter the domain name that you registered. Use the image below as an example and remember to change the TLD at the end from .com.ng to the correct one. Click on the button to Continue

Next you will be required to enter your details. If it is your first time, enter your correct details using the example below. If you already have an account, click on Existing Customer and enter the necessary details. If you made a mistake you can click on the Empty Cart button on the top right hand corner to start all over again. Take note of the phone number formats in the form. There are two places where you will be required to enter your phone number. For the one on the left (for SMS notifications), start it with the country code without the plus and without the leading zero. Thus if you are in Nigeria and your number is 0818 713 1717, enter 2348187131717. But for the Phone number on the right, you can enter it in the normal form i.e 0818 713 1717.

Steps to Buy a Hosting Plan from HostGator

When your website starts getting lots of traffic daily, you will eventually get to the point where an upgrade might become necessary. If you started with a Nigerian host, this is the point where we advice that you should upgrade to a foreign host. You may also opt for a foreign host if you live outside Nigeria or if you are building a website where you expect a very high number of daily visitors in the range of thousands. Although foreign hosts tend to be much more expensive than Nigerian hosts, they come with certain desirable features such as ability to host unlimited domains with just one hosting account and virtually unlimited bandwidth. Foreign packages also provide the capability to handle higher numbers of daily visitors making it ideal for a very busy website that is running short of server resources. HostGator is a very reliable foreign host and if you must go with a foreign host, they are the ones to use. They accept most Nigerian or foreign debit cards that carry the Mastercard or Visa logo. These include the Websurfer card, UBA Africard, Zenith ATM card, Verified GTB Naira mastercard etc . If you live in Nigeria, you will be required to prove to them that you are the real owner of the card. We will show you how it is done later on in this section. Some of the other foreign hosts mentioned also accept many of these cards so when you have more experience, you may also wish to try them sometime. In the following section we shall describe how to buy hosting from HostGator using Zenith Websurfer Card. The procedure described here is virtually identical for most other cards.

Step 1: Visit the Hostgator Website Go to www.m.ng44.com/hostgator and click on View Web Hosting Plans

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 38

Of the three plans (Hatchling, Baby and Business), the Baby plan is better for beginning online business because it will enable you to use many domains with only one hosting account. What this means is that you can have as many different domain names as you like connected to this single hosting account and they will all function as separate websites on their own. By implication, under this plan you will not need to buy new hosting anytime you want to host a new website. We shall learn more about how to do this in coming Lessons. Step 2: Click on Order Now under the Baby plan

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 39

Step 3: Enter the domain name that you want to host Because you shall be registering your domain name by yourself, you are to use the box on the right hand side. In this box, enter the domain name which you searched for earlier on and which you want to buy hosting for. Do this and click on Continue to Step 2. Do not be bothered that the name has not yet been registered. You will register it after buying the hosting.

Step 4: Select the package type, billing cycle and account registration details. For Package Type, select Baby. For billing Cycle, select the one that is convenient for you depending on how much you have. If you are following this course for the first time and you have decided to follow the start up Strategy B: (N25,000 capital or more) as described in Lesson 2, then this is how you should proceed: If you loaded you Websurfer card with $200 - $299, select the 6 month billing cycle. If you loaded with $120 - $199, select the monthly billing cycle and if you loaded with $300 and above, you may select the yearly billing cycle. On the other hand, for purposes of practicing the things explained in this Lesson, you can start off with the one month cycle and when you have mastered the techniques, you may change your billing cycle by contacting Hostgator support and making a request. From the figure given in the next screenshot, 6 Months @ 7.96/mo means that the total amount you will pay if you select the 6 month billing package is 6 x 7.96 = $47.76. After 6 months, your card will automatically be billed again for another 6 months.

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 40

For 12 Months @ 7.96/mo, the total will be 12 x $7.96 = $95.52.

Under Username, enter any username you will like to be using to login to this account (could be your business name e.g innotech). For Security Pin, enter any 4 to 8 digit number, something like 655638 or 27261 etc. The Security PIN is a number you select and it works like your ATM PIN. Although you will not be required to provide it often, make sure that you remember what it is or write it down in the event that you are asked to quote it in the future. Step 5: Enter your billing details On the same page, scroll down to the Billing Information form into which you are to enter your Websurfer card details. For name on card, enter your full name and surname e.g. Jeremiah Ebojie. Enter all the other details correctly (remember that the expiry, CVV and all other details are in the websurfer email. For zip code, use 300001 or any other six digit number.

Make sure that all the information that you have entered is correct, agree to their terms by selecting the checkbox indicated by the arrow in the next screenshot and then click on Create Account.

If there is a problem with the transaction or if they were unable to bill your card, you will get the following error message:

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 42

But if everything goes well and the transaction is successful, you will see this success message:

At the same time, you will be sent an email containing your new account information. This email contains your username, password, login link and all other necessary info that you need concerning your new hosting account. If you see the success message, it means that you have successfully scaled the first hurdle but that is not the end yet. With HostGator, there is usually another hurdle to scale after which you will be free to use your new account. This second hurdle is for you to verify your identity and to prove to them that your card is genuine. It applies to orders made from Nigeria and one or two other restricted countries. Because of the poor reputation of Nigeria in the eyes of the international community, many foreigners are very cautious when it comes to doing business with us. This is why, even though the transaction was successful and your card was billed, your account will be deactivated after some minutes and you will be sent an email asking you to verify your identity by sending certain documents.

The documents you will be required to send are:

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 43

1. Scanned copy of your drivers license or international passport. (Make sure that the scan is clear) 2. Scanned copy of the front and back of your Websurfer card. 3. Scanned copy of the most recent teller or deposit slip that you used to load the card in Zenith bank (whenever you are loading your card, always make sure that the name of the depositor that you use tallies with the card holder name. If it is your card, this should be your name). 4. Screenshot of your online account statement (we will show you how to get the screenshot shortly). When you send the first two documents in response to their request, you must also explain to them in the email that the card is an online only debit card that does not bear your name. You need to do this because what they really want by asking you to scan the card is to see any document that contains both your name and the credit card number in one place. When you have sent these documents, you will get a reply asking you to further send a scanned copy of the bank deposit slip and a screenshot of your cards online account statement. Later we shall look at how to get the screenshot of your account but first let us look at a real life email exchange between HostGator and our company during verification. When doing your own verification, take examples from our replies shown in the exchange and try to change or rephrase the words that we used so that you can use our replies as a template for your own verification responses.

1. Hostgator Says: Hello, Thank you for your order with HostGator.com! In order for us to continue with the account setup, please respond to this ticket with a scanned copy of a Photo ID such as as a passport, or drivers license. In addition to a photo ID, please include a scanned copy of the credit card that was used in your account purchase (assuming you purchased a hosting account with a credit card). For security purposes you can mask off all the digits of the card number except for the last 4 digits. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation here, and look forward to working with you.

2. We attached the photo ID and Card scans and then Reply: Please find attached the requested documents. Kindly note that the card used for the payment is a reloadable mastercard debit card meant for Internet usage only.

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 44

3. HostGator Says: Hello, Because the credit card used is a virtual card(for electronic/Internet use only), we would like to request a screen shot of the card's account management page showing the last four digits of the card number and your name. If the last four digits of the card number are not available, then please make sure the name and the transaction are visible. Feel free to block out all numbers except for the last four digits. You can obtain a screen shot by logging into your credit card's website and viewing your account information. Your name and the last four digits of the card's number must be visible. Take the screen shot by pressing the PrtScn (print screen) key on your keyboard, then open Paint (or another image editing program) and press Ctrl-V to paste it; then save it as a jpg file. You can cover any personal information in Paint. If the online statement is not available, then we can accept any of the following: -An ATM receipt showing your name and the last four digits of your card number -A printed statement from the bank showing your name and the last four digits of your card number -A receipt for the purchase of the card (If it's prepaid) showing the last four digits of the card number -A receipt for adding funds to the card showing your name and the last four digits of your card number We apologize for the extra security steps, but we wish to ensure the security of the card holder as well as protect ourselves from fraudulent activity. Please provide us with the above information at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

4. We attached the online statement and bank deposit teller and then Reply: I have attached : 1. A screenshot of the account management page (the page does not show the name and card number, just the transactions and yours has been left visible).

2. The bank receipt for adding funds to the card. To add funds, we pay into a special local account (which is visible on the receipt) and not directly into the card, hence the card number does not appear on this receipt, only the special account tied to this card).

These are the only two documents in my possession that come closest to your requirements.

5. HostGator accepts and says:

Hello, Thank you for verifying your order with HostGator. We appreciate you taking the time to do so. We have activated your account!

Things to Note When Emailing HostGator Support

1. The first time that you send HostGator an email or reply to their email, you will receive an automated message in your mail telling you to verify your email address by clicking on a link given in the mail. You must do this for your reply to reach them, if you do not do this, your email will not be received by them.

2. HostGator normally responds to emails within a few hours so do not wait for too long before going back to check for a reply. If you are able to, check for their reply after 6 -12 hours and even if its not there, you will definitely get it within 24 hours. If you do not get a response from them after 24 hours, check your spam folder. Also make sure that you have completed item number 1 above (verify your email).

How to Obtain a Screenshot of Your Websurfer Online Statement

A screenshot is a picture that shows the exact thing displayed on your computer screen as at the time the picture was taken. 90% of the pictures used in this course are screenshots. Getting a screenshot of your Websurfer online statement is easy if you know how to do it. It involves three actions: capturing, pasting and saving. The process in a nutshell: first you have to login to your Websurfer account. When you have logged in and your account statement is displayed, you press a special button on your keyboard to capture the image exactly as it is on the screen. After doing that, you open an image editing program such as Microsoft Paint, paste it into

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 46

the program and save it as a JPEG or JPG image. A similar technique is what was used to obtain many of the screenshots used in this course. Below are the steps to follow to obtain a screenshot: Step 1: Login to your Websurfer account. When you log in, what you see is the online statement of your account. It is important that you take the screenshot after having concluded the HostGator transaction so that the Hostgator entry will be visible (red arrow). Do not use an old screenshot because one of their reasons for requesting a screenshot is to see where the current transaction which you are trying to verify was recorded.

Step 2: Capture the Screenshot There is a special button on a computer or laptop keyboard called the Print Screen (or PrtSc) button. The function of this button is to capture exactly what is on your screen and convert it to a picture which you can later paste into an image editor. This button is located on the top row of keys, towards the right hand side. It usually has Print Screen or PrtSc Sys Req written on it.

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 47

Try to locate this button and then make sure that only the account statement is visible on your computer screen and that there are no other files or windows open. The reason is that once you press the Print Screen button, everything showing on your computer screen at that time will be captured exactly as you see it on the screen. To capture what is on the screen, press the PrtSc button once. When you press the button, you may not notice anything but dont worry, the screenshot is already in the computers memory and all you need to do next is to paste it in an image editor. Step 3: Paste into an image editor An image editor is a program that allows you to view, edit and modify pictures. Microsoft Windows comes with an in-built image editor so that you do not need to download another program. You can find this image editor, known as Paint under Programs > Accessories in the start menu. The following screenshots show how to locate it in Windows XP and Windows 7.

When you have successfully opened Paint, you will need to paste the screenshot into the editing area. To paste, use the keyboard button combination of Ctrl and V. On your keyboard, press the Ctrl button and the V button together (or press Ctrl first and while you are still pressing it down, press V at the same time). If you do this correctly, you will immediately see the screenshot that you took pasted into Paint. If the screenshot looks OK and clearly shows your online statement including the HostGator entry, the next thing to do is to save it in JPG format. But if the screenshot

does not look OK, you have to go back and capture it again, properly this time; then return to Paint and paste it again or open another Paint window and paste it. Step 4: Save Screenshot in JPG format For Paint in Windows 7: a.) Click on the Save icon (small diskette icon) in the top left hand corner of the Paint program window

b.) In Save As dialog box that comes up, do the following: - Click on Desktop (if you want it to be saved on your desktop) or select any other place that you wish to save it - For File Name, type in any descriptive name like cardstatement or webscreenshot - For Save as type, select JPEG from the dropdown - Click on Save c.) Go and view the saved file to see what it looks like

What if the Verification Fails?

The steps for verifying your payment with HostGator as explained in the previous section are the same steps that we normally use whenever we buy hosting from them. The procedures have worked every time for us and there is no reason why it shouldnt work for you if properly done. Yet if after doing all these things your payment is still not verified then your only other option would be to try another web host. The process of buying web hosting from most other hosts is very similar to that for Hostgator therefore it should be easy for you to figure out. Remember if you run into difficulties, you can always get help from the Mentoring forum. If you do not have success with paying the foreign hosts or for one reason or the other you decide to use a Nigerian host, we suggest that you try either Web4Africas Bronze or Silver plan (www.web4africa.net/web-hosting/linux.php ) or Syskay Systems Standard, Business or Advanced plan (www.syskay.com/hosting.html ). These are both Nigerian/African hosting companies and they accept payments by direct deposit into their Nigerian bank account or via Interswitch ATM card. The fact that they accept Nigerian forms of payment makes them a viable alternative to foreign hosts because with them you will not have to be bothered with the whole payment verification challenge as is usually the case with HostGator.

Confirm that Everything is in Order

When you have successfully registered a domain name and hosting, to verify that everything is in order, go to your browser address bar, type in the new domain name that you just registered and press Enter. If you see the Hostgator Getting Started page as shown in the next screenshot, it means all is well. If not, then the most likely reason is a problem with your nameservers. In the next section, we shall look at how to manage your nameservers and other aspects of your domain name.

Tip: If you try to access a newly registered website via Google search you will not find it. The correct way to access a new (or old) website is via the browser address bar. It is located near the top of your browser and usually displays the URL of any page that you are viewing. That is where you should always type in web addresses that you want to visit. Only when you are not sure of the correct address of a website should you go through Google Search.

Managing Your Domain Name

The sequence of steps outlined in the previous section describes how to register a domain name for the very first time. After registering your first domain, you will find it necessary at some point in the future to make changes to the configuration or to register another domain name. All of this can easily be done via your domain control panel. The most common reasons why you would want to access your control panel are either to change your contact details, to renew the registration for a name or to change nameserver information. To access your domain control panel, go to www.m.ng44.com/namecheap and login through the login form at the top of the website.

If your login is successful, you will get to the welcome screen. To modify a domain, click on the first View as indicated by the first arrow in the screenshot. Doing this will take you to a page that contains a listing of all your domains. From this page you can click on any of the names to get to the modification panel for that domain name.

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 56

Alternatively, to go directly to modifying a domain, you can type the name in the field indicated by the second arrow (under Quickly modify one of your domains) and then click the Modify>> button. Whichever route you chose to follow, you will eventually end up on the modification panel for that name. From this point you can make changes to all the details associated with the selected domain, including the nameserver information (arrow) and your contact information (box).

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will notice that the details under registrant contact information for the domain now shows as a foreign address. Remember WhoisGuard? Well this is what it does. It helps you to cloak your real contact details so that other people will not have access to it. If an external party searches for the contact details of your domain name, the WhoisGuard information is what they will see instead of your real contact details for the next one year while the service is active.

Note: The WhoisGuardTM service is given as a bonus when you register. The bonus will expire after one year and your information will now be visible to the public. Whether your real details are visible or not does not affect the performance of your website. It is therefore not compulsory for you to renew the service after the bonus year expires but some people like to keep their details private so if you want yours to remain hidden from the public, you will have to renew the service after the bonus one year has expired.

Register for Free Online Business e-Lectures at: www.NG44.com/freecourse

Online Business Bible. Lesson 5.

P a g e | 57

The WhoisGuard information cannot be changed but your real contact information can be changed by clicking Change Protected Contact Information as indicated by the box in the previous screenshot. After clicking and changing whatever information you want to change, click on Save Changes and you will be taken back ant to the previous screen. Similarly, to change or update your nameservers, from the left hand menu click on Domain Name Server Setup (arrow) to display a form where you can change them. It can sometimes take up to 48 hours for DNS changes to become effective. If you continue to have problems accessing your site more than 48 hours after hosting with another company, always ensure that your nameservers point to the correct DNS address of the new host ost.

How to Register a New Domain under the Same Account

To register a new domain name with Namecheap and most other hosts, you do not need to create another new account. You can register as many domain names as you like through your already existing control panel and they will all function as separate rol unrelated entities. The steps to register another domain under the same Namecheap account are almost identical with the steps for registering a new domain name as previously explained explained. The only difference is that this time you will not be asked to create an account again again. To register a new domain under the same account, go to www.m.ng44.com/namecheap login to your account and click on Domains www.m.ng44.com/namecheap, Domains.

t From this point forward, the process is the same as that for first time registration. Search for the new name you want to register and proceed as earlier outlined.

More Testimonies from Our Students

"I am from Cotonou with my sister. We are orphans and growing up was very very difficult for us. Things were so tough that many times we seriously considered going into prostitution to survive because many young girls do it here. One day while looking for a job online, we stumbled on your ebook advert. We borrowed money to buy the e-book with the mindset that if it did not work, we will travel to Nigeria for prostitution. We applied everything you taught to the French side of things because my country is French. To the Glory of God, today, exactly one year later, our story is different. We now hold seminars to train people in website design and online business and we now make far more money than we had ever imagined we would ever make in this life." - Juliette and Francine Abou, Cotonou

"Things were very rough for us after I took in for our second baby. My husband lost his job and I had no job. We were just managing with the little money he saved, dreading the day when we will run out of money. Around that time, I came across your e-books and with the last money I had, I paid and started going to my friend's cafe to practice. At the onset it was tough but your words of encouragement whenever I called got me going. Today my husband and I are fully into online business. We have 14 websites and have made more than a million naira before my son was born. You came into my life and turned everything around for the better. May God continue to bless you and your family just as you have blessed others with your gift and knowledge. We named our son Eromosele in appreciation of your impact in our family" - Mrs Bose Alade-Oni, Housewife, Ilorin
