Appearance: A hypertrophic scar looks like a raised, firm mass of tissue. These types of scars often grow larger than the original wound. Hypertrophic scars caused by acne are most often found on the torso, especially in men. Development: Unlike ice pick or boxcar scars, hypertrophic scars are not caused by a loss of tissue. Rather, they develop because of an overproduction of collagen. Common treatments: Steroid (cortisone) creams, tapes, or injections are used to help shrink and flatten the scar. Interferon injections are also used to soften scar tissue.

Before you can even begin to decide how to treat your acne scars, it is important to understand that there are different types of acne scars and therefore different treatment options for each.

Pitted acne scars are considered to be the most severe type of acne scar. These scars have actually caused dents in the skin due to the scar tissue beneath the skin. Although we are talking about the most severe cases of acne scars, there are treatment plans at your disposal and you dont have to live with pitted acne scars anymore. Treatments For Pitted Acne Scars Pitted acne scars are made up of scar tissue so with this being said; the beginning of any treatment plan should include massaging the skin. The massaging of the skin can actually break up the scar tissue when you apply even amounts of pressure and massage in circular motions. It is recommended to do this 2-3 times per day, every day to begin working up the old scar tissue in order to prepare your skin for the following treatments. Chemical peels are extremely popular for this type of acne scars because the essence of this treatment is to literally peel away the top 2-3 layers of skin, making your acne scars less noticeable and your skin 100% smoother.
