UNITED STATES ARMY RAILROAD CRANES The information below was gleaned mostly from the manufacturers records.

Other information was found in the records of the Alaska RR, the US Army Transportation Museum and several other sources. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. From limited information it looks like before WWII cranes were numbered in a XX-XX system. During the war a new system was used where the first two digits were the lifting capacity in tons. By 1949 a system was adapted using the prefix C followed by one to four digits. Up until November 16, 1942 all US Army railroad operations were under the Corps of Engineers. At this point railway operations were transferred to the Transportation Corps. By June 30, 1945 106 locomotive cranes built for the Military Rail Service and lend-lease, had been exported for use by US military forces or their allies. There are indications that the US Army had 20 or more 20-ton Brownhoist design steam cranes during WWII. These were assigned to both American and British forces in France. Certain post war users were the SNCF ( number uncertain ), Army, Longmoor ( 1no. ); Dorman Long ( at least 2no. with tracklaying subsidiary, used at Margam and Tyne Yard constructions ); Port Talbot Drydock Coy.; Ernest Wright, Bilston; Dutch industrial users ( incl. Piet Smit Shipyard, which had at least three ); Belgian industrial users ( including F.P van Loon, Heesch ) and possibly the SNCB and French industrial users. Another is at Castell Maggiore, Army Civil Engineers Depot (near Bologna) Italy. Per Chris Capewell The Dutch Steam Assn. (Stoom Stichting Nederland) has a former US Army 20-ton Industrial Brownhoist steam crane built in 1943. It and three sisters went to the Piet Smit shipyard in the Netherlands after WWII. The other three were converted to diesel at some point but this one (#23) worked in steam until 1977. US AIR FORCE LOCOMOTIVE CRANES On September 18, 1947 the US Army Air Forces was split off from the Army and became the US Air Force. Army equipment that was useful to the Air Force was transferred to the new organization. This included a goodly amount of railroad equipment. As of June 30 1960 the Air Force had 394 cars, 162 locomotives and 44 locomotive cranes. The US Army Transportation Corps had procurement and maintenance responsibility for this equipment. Except for the new cranes listed bellow all came from Army inventory. Of the 44 cranes in use in 1960 they break down as follows:
