Many concepts were developed as a result of the workshop: the
self-organizing bus system was a scenario in which the bus system
would be able shed its traditionally rigid schedule and become
intelligently selforganizing; reconguring the bus transformed buses
into mobile network nodes, so that passengers would be connected
for guidance, entertainment and mobile work; electronic guimard
described a bus system with a traditionally distinct character, but
enhanced through smart capabilities and electronic displays; the
neighborhood concierge was thought to function as a landmark that
would distinguish and characterize its neighborhood.

Locast platform can help to reinforce the relationship between
institutions and citizens. In the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, the
system will be used as a journalist tool to help people report and
spread around what is happening in the physical space around
them. Tis civic media experiment will enlist the help of students
of the Media Communications Department (FAMECOS) at
PUCRS that will be protagonists of the deployment and eventually
expand the participation to the whole citizenship.
Te main objective of the project is to understand how mobile
social networks could impact the city, its media representation and
help people to stay informed.

4 phases of the touristic experience: Organizing your trip, Traveling,
Discover & Share, and Keeping in touch. Te project focuses on the
uniqueness of the Italian cities heritage superimposing a layer that
corresponds to the shared media-based memory of the recent Italian
past: the RAI Archives. By taking advantage of the interactivity pro-

Te system, with its main components of social networking,
reputation management, referrals and geopositioning makes it
possible to coordinate the matching of drivers and passengers with
preferences entered online in user profles.
Te system can detect successful ride-shares and will reward par-
ticipants accordingly, thereby providing an incentive to continue
using the system. In addition to promoting social sustainability, the
system also serves to prevent driving under the infuence of alco-
hol. Te bracelet includes a breath-analyzer that tells users when
it is unsafe for them to drive and then, via the link to the mobile
phone, allows users to fnd rides with drivers they trust.

Near-Field Communication is a short-range high-frequency wire-
less communication technology which enables the exchange of
data between devices over approximately 10-cm distance. Current
usages include mobile ticketing on public transportation systems,
mobile payment, smart postering, and bluetooth pairing.
For this project, we imagined a future on usage scenarios of
ic technology in the specifc context of mi1 Campus, from the
perspective of an mi1 student. As fnal deliverable, we produced a

Social networking applications are becoming increasingly popu-
lar among the population of all ages and social status. Mobile
devices, especially the newest generation with improved hard-
ware and sofware capabilities, are opening new opportunities to
access information and difuse content. Te distinction between
the virtual and the physical worlds is becoming fuzzier, promot-
ing a new defnition of space, social interaction and the physical
environment. Te goal of the collaboration with Telefonica is to
understand how the combination between social networks, loca-
tion-based systems, instant blogging, emerging user experiences
and ubiquitous computing can determine the next-generation of
mobile-commerce applications.

Trade shows are an extremely complex ecosystem, comprised
of the omcial website, the physical location, registration desk,
badges, turnstiles, booths, signate, walkways and atmospheres;
even outside the show, its people interact with the city in which it
is situated, with its people and cultural events. Within this context,
the MEL is developing technologies and services to foster location-
based connections and improve user experience during the trade
shows. We focus on innovation in four areas: registration, the
entrance, the badge, and the virtual handshake, all with smart ap-
plications for on-site and online use. Together these new concepts
will transform Pitti Immagines trade shows.

A Mobile device can function as an Electronic Lens (eLens);
citizens can use these devices to investigate and explore the urban
environment. Imagine, you simply point your mobile phone at
a building or landmark in order to access historical and cultural
information. eLens users can post messages in physical locations,
tag buildings and places, create social networks based on common
interests and social empathy, and share information, opinions,
experiences and passions. eLens interaction enriches the physical
environment; formal and institutional information are combined
with informal communication and personal notes.

self-organizing bus system was a scenario in which the bus system
would be able shed its traditionally rigid schedule and become
intelligently selforganizing; reconguring the bus transformed buses
into mobile network nodes, so that passengers would be connected
for guidance, entertainment and mobile work; electronic guimard
described a bus system with a traditionally distinct character, but
enhanced through smart capabilities and electronic displays; the
neighborhood concierge was thought to function as a landmark that
would distinguish and characterize its neighborhood.

In future scenarios of public transportation, the bus stop can be
more than the simple place where passengers and buses connect.
With appropriate uses of information technology, the bus stop can
serve as landmark and community rallying point, adopting new
versions of the roles traditionally played by a cultural center or
town square. Te MIT Mobile Experience Lab developed a proto-
type of this new vision of the bus stop.

strategically designed to integrate the diferent subjects that will be

Working on integration is very important for diferent reasons;
Integration is needed to avoid to be perceived just as a list of
companies and institutions sharing a common space, Manifattura
Domani should be perceived and recognize as a whole to become a
benchmark in sustainable development. Its identity it shouldnt be

Te site chosen was the Rural Development Academy in Bhogra,
and it is a feasible reference for a small BSE with housing for 12-16
cows. Te bio-digesting plant on site provides enough gas for
cooking for the entire facility. Te cow shelter with approximately
twenty feet (20) wide bays with two rows of cows and a central
collection drain for manure had overhead fans to ward of mos-
quitoes and to provide cooling. Since the roof is made out of cor-
rugated metal sheets which gets uncomfortably hot in the summer.
In this shelter a false ceiling made out of woven mats is utilized to
keep the space cool. Te cows were the smaller body type and each
cow supposedly yields about 15 20 Kg of dung/ day.

Mobile technologies and new media have created a new way to
improve youth civic participation, especially in sustainable and
environmental matters, and to explore the increasing opportunity
of embedding electronic media and Wi-Fi connectivity into the
urban fabric.
In this workshop, we will frst imagine new forms of communica-
tion and services to foster learning, knowledge and social inclu-
sion. Second, we will explore designs for embedding electronics
into the urban fabric, as well as into the public transportation
system, so that they may promote ubiquitous accessibility to infor-

Beginning with a student workshop in the fall of 2008, the Mobile
Experience Lab identifed a number of areas where mobile devices
and television can intersect. Technological advances will allow for
a new era of participatory journalism, where citizens collabo-
rate with broadcasters to cover and disseminate news content.
Entertainment programming can involve audiences in new ways,
such as multiple story-lines. Trough concepts like location-based
content, broadcasters can give tourists new ways to participate in
local cultures. Food programming can change as mobile devices
can accompany viewers to the store and kitchen. Finally, ubiqui-
tous access to information, mediated by TV broadcasters, can help
viewers make more environmentally sustainable decisions.

Bringing fashion into the future, making connections between people
and entities committed to the advancement of the eld and reinforc-
ing Italys leadership role. Developing a vision, concept and strategy
for the role of Castel Pulci was the goal of this workshop. Te
vision for Castel Pulci is to revitalize the villa into an intercon-
nected environment, through architectural interventions, as well
as network and media technologies, building on the villas history
of transformations and structural additions. Facilitating human
interaction and remote communication will create a new kind of
diplomacy between the Tuscan fashion industry and global part-
ners, and Castel Pulci will be at this intersection.
