The Attorney Generals office selected South Mecklenburg High School for a kickoff event in conjunction with an anti-drug initiative. The event took place on Wednesday, March 21st at 1 pm in the South Mecklenburg High School Auditorium. Guest Speakers included: Attorney General Roy Cooper Amanda Fannasy, a former Adderall addict who now works in marketing and often speaks to teenagers about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs Frankie Andrews, who has worked with the Attorney Generals office on this issue for a while. He had two nephews die from overdosing on prescription drugs and now does a lot of work for the cause as a representative for the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse The anti-drug initiative includes a video competition for all high school students in North Carolina. Students have been asked to create 30-second public service announcement style videos about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs and enter their videos for prizes that include an iPad and an iPod Touch. The winning videos will be posted on the North Carolina Department of Justices website. The Attorney General hopes to combat the idea that prescription drugs are safer than illegal drugs just because they are prescribed by a doctor. News from the PTSA

Staff Appreciation Week is May 7-11

Gift Card Collection
The Staff Appreciation Committee will be hosting Staff Appreciation Week May 7-11. One way we pamper the staff during that week is with gift cards. Each staff member will receive a $10 gift card as a small token of our thanks. Gift card suggestions are: Target, Harris Teeter, Walmart, Lowes, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, or local restaurants. If you would like to donate, please send a $10 gift card in an envelope marked PTSA Staff Appreciation Committee to the main office by Friday, April 27th. Any donations will be greatly appreciated! Thank you for helping make our wonderful staff feel appreciated!

Senior Showcase
This spring the PTSA will display future plans for the Class of 2012 in a Senior Showcase located in the mall area. In next weeks homeroom, seniors will receive a form asking them about their plans for next year (academic, employment, military, etc.) This is a special time for us to recognize their hard work and achievement. While participation is voluntary, we encourage all seniors to participate. (

note: Seniors who are undecided at this time will have additional opportunities to complete the form.)
A special thank you to Nick Dietz of Interiors Group General Contractors for his generous support in updating the display cases.

South Mecklenburg High School has lost one of our bright and shining stars Thomas Luciano, who passed away on March 31, 2012. Thomas was the NJROTC Cadet Chief Petty Officer as well as the units Public Affairs Officer. He was also very involved in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club. Thomas and his teammates recently placed 1st in the HOSA State competition. Thomas had a smile that would light up a room and South Mecklenburg High School will miss his warm and caring attitude. Please join us as we send our deepest condolences to Thomas family. He will be greatly missed but, never forgotten.
