Sentence Fluency Lesson

Name: Christa Jennings Date: September 27, 2011 Grade Level/Subject: 3rd Grade Writing Prerequisite Knowledge: -Slight background information on sentence fluency and why it helps their writing Approximate Time: 30 minutes Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: -Students will understand how to write with long, short, and middle length sentences -Students will understand that writing varied length sentences adds flow to their writing and helps make it more interesting Content Standards: 3.A.2 Write paragraphs that include a variety of sentence types; appropriate use of the eight parts of speech; and accurate spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Materials/Resources/Technology: -One copy of My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks -One copy of Winter Tunnelsoriginal -One copy of Winter Tunnelsrevised -Document camera and projector -Each student will need his or her writers notebook

Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations) -Call students to carpet using bell -Make sure that students are sitting in their rows on the carpet facing forward Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs -Ask students about sentence fluency (this was covered the day before) --Ask why the icon is a telephone -If necessary guide towards answers of: --It helps your writing flow --Means that some sentences are longer and some are shorter -Tell students that we will be learning a little bit more about sentence fluency today -Introduce My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks --I shared this book when we were talking about making connections and now we get to read it --Remind students to pay attention to the long and short sentences in the story -Begin reading My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks -Stop to point out long and short sentences mixed up --page 3 (Look at my dad. Is a short sentence but the next sentence is much longer) --continue with two more stopping points to show short and long sentences -Teach students the Sentence Fluency song

desk yet -Ask students to sing the sentence fluency song until everyone is back at their seat -Dismiss students to their seats by table -Turn on document camera which will have Winter Tunnelsoriginal already set up -Tell students I will read through this writing by another student before they added different length sentences for sentence fluency -Read Winter Tunnels -Now tell students that the same person rewrote the story adding more longer and shorter sentences for fluency -Read Winter Tunnelsrevised and ask students what they noticed is different
