LEATHERBOUND CLASSICS Preferred Bindings

The premium full-leather titles listed under the Franklin Library heading below have become, for their matchless quality of production, 'Franklin preferred' to the Easton Press or Folio Society 'premier press' bindings. If a familiar 'classic' title is not listed under the Franklin heading, it is likely because an alternate offering by Easton or Folio has since become the obvious 'consumer choice.' These exceptions aside, however, the earliest Franklin titles (1974 ~ 1987) represent, at least for this discriminating collector of finely crafted books, the 'final word' in bookbinding.* Franklin Mint ~ in one brief, shining moment of publishing history ~ was able to produce in astonishing breadth and array, elegance, beauty, and unsurpassed quality of production, a formidable library of what have since become the definitive 'Rolls Royce' creations among leatherbound books, setting a very high standard indeed ~ one which, it is safe to say, will never again be so brilliantly or so broadly achieved.
* Invariably after 1987, as Franklin's star waned and an inferior product replaced the 'pure gold' that had gone before, Easton Press was the unrivaled leader in fine book publishing. Sadly, by the
end of the 80s, Franklin's light had irrevocably diminished because of an inferior product. With the birth of a new millennium it had vanished forever.

A Franklin book of 'first ranking', below, is marked by the italicized 'edition series' name to which it belongs listed immediately after its bolded title, followed by suggested printing-press 'ties' or citations of 'honorable mention.' Where no 'tie' or 'honorable mention' occurs, it is to be understood that the Franklin Mint creation ~ whether a stunning gold-stamped, image-embossed 'Oxford/Franklin' masterpiece, a highly coveted 'Signed 60' title, or even that more elusive wonder, the 'Patrons Edition' ~ is (far and away IMHO) the finest leather-bound tradition to have ever issued from the nation's top publishing houses. Where there is a 'tie', almost invariably I opt for the Franklin edition. A few examples of Franklin's later faux-leather ('leatherette') and quarter-bound editions, for reasons of unique style and design, are included in the list below (a nod to Franklin's vast production scope and variety). Their inclusion is not to be taken as suggestion that these replace their 'first ranking' full-leather counterparts (absurd, of course), but rather as acknowledgment that, even with these clearly inferior incarnations of its later bookbinding years, Franklin was able to maintain a modicum of class and style that deserves honorable mention. 'Oxford/Franklin' = Oxford University's incomparable* Oxford Library of the World's Great Books series (1981-85), produced by Franklin Mint. 'Signed 60' = Franklin Mint's ultimate 60 Signed Limited Edition series (1977-82) of sixty honored production-elite titles personally flat-signed by their illustrious authors. 'Patrons Edition' = Franklin Mint's limited Deluxe Patrons Edition ~ a particularly luxurious 'numbered' full-leather collectors issue, showcasing full-color cover artwork illustration, in a beautifully constructed matching buckram slipcase. TIE = quality of Easton Press or Folio Society publication materials and/or design comparable to that of Franklin Mint for the same title. * While Franklin's Great Books of the Western World series (1978-85) is indeed, for its scope and content, a most admirable and well-crafted collection, it suffers somewhat aesthetically, in style and design, with the exception of a few select titles (listed below).

That each title be allowed its own 'character' is particularly appropriate for a Dickens collection. Interestingly, in 1981, Oxford/Franklin published a wholly separate edition from its imminent OLCD creation, uniquely designed, of Dickens' Great Expectations. Still brandishing Oxford's elegant inner-board ticking (gilt stamping), this alternate edition contributes very nicely indeed to a more eclectic collectors approach to building a unique Dickens library. To that end it is fortunate that Easton Press, beyond its own 'complete works' collections, also has made available a variety of differing special editions (from within its Famous Editions collection) of individual Dickens titles (see the Easton Press 'Dickens' section below). This holds true also for Easton's most recent offering of The Complete Works of Ernest Hemingway, another uniform collection, the

individual titles of which, for diversity and color in appearance, might be acquired from the wide array of Franklin and Easton editions produced over the years. Sketches By Boz (1985 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens) Christmas Books (1982 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens and 1980 World's Best-Loved Books ~ Three Christmas Stories) Christmas Stories (1985 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens) Master Humphrey's Clock and A Child's History of England (1984 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens) American Notes and Pictures from Italy (1985 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens) David Copperfield (1976 100 Greatest Books of All Time; honorable mention: 1980 brown quarter-bound) Great Expectations (1981 Oxford/Franklin ~ considering even the OLCD publication, this is perhaps the finest edition available today; a Franklin 100 also) The Uncommercial Traveller and Reprinted Pieces (1985 Oxford Library of Charles Dickens) The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1988 Mystery Masterpieces - produced in both full-leather and in faux leather or 'leatherette' hardcover, the first-occurring exception to this inventory's first-ranking entries; I list it here for diversity's sake, as just one example in that wide-ranging appropriation of publishing styles that became Franklin's large production arena) Wuthering Heights (1983 Oxford/Franklin; honorable mention: 1975 100 Greatest Books of All Time, 1978 World's Best-Loved Books, and Easton) Pride and Prejudice (1980 100 Greatest Books of All Time; TIE with Easton) Vanity Fair (1984 Oxford/Franklin and 1979 World's Best-Loved Books, one of Franklin Mint's finest creations; a Franklin 100 also) Trollope Tales of All Countries (1984 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) The Mill on the Floss (1982 100 Greatest Books of All Time) Tess of the D'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented (1982 Oxford/Franklin; honorable mention: Easton and Folio) Jude the Obscure (1977 100 Greatest Books of All Time; TIE with Easton) The Portrait of A Lady (1984 Oxford/Franklin; honorable mention: 1983 World's Best-Loved Books) The Ambassadors (1979 Greatest Books of the Twentieth Century; a Franklin 100 also) Henry James Tales (1979 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature and 1977 100 Greatest Books of All Time) To the Lighthouse (1980 Greatest Books of the Twentieth Century; TIE with Easton) Madame Bovary (1983 Oxford/Franklin and 1978 100 Greatest Books of All Time) Lust for Life (1981 'Signed 60'; honorable mention: Easton) Pushkin Tales (1983 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) The Red and the Black (1984 Oxford/Franklin; a Franklin 100 also) Turgenev Tales (1978 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) Crime and Punishment (1975 100 Greatest Books of All Time; TIE with Easton) The Brothers Karamazov (1977 Great Books of the Western World) Dostoevsky Stories (1979 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) War and Peace (1981 100 Greatest Books of All Time) Anna Karenina (1983 Oxford/Franklin ~ dualtone leather binding version in a rare case where Oxford/Franklin produced simultaneously two different full-leather versions; also meriting special mention, then, is the second version which, while not brandishing the dual leather, is a gorgeous creation in its own right, still gorgeously marked by Oxford/Franklin's customary inner-board gilt stamping; honorable mention: 1980 quarter-bound, Easton and Folio) Nabokov's Dozen (1977 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) The Three Musketeers (1978 World's Best-Loved Books; TIE with Easton) Dumas Stories (1979 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) Le Pre Goriot (1982 Oxford/Franklin; honorable mention: Easton; a Franklin 100 also) Balzac Droll Stories (1979 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) Swann's Way (1983 Oxford/Franklin; honorable mention: Easton; a Franklin 100 also) Colette Gigi and Other Stories (1977 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers) The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales (1981 100 Greatest Books of All Time; TIE with Easton and Folio) Snow White and Other Tales (1978 World's Best-Loved Books) Hans Andersen Fairy Tales (1977 Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers and Clarke illustrated 1982 100 Greatest Books of All Time; TIE with Easton; honorable mention: Folio) Alice's Adventures In Wonderland (Tenniel illustrated 1975 100 Greatest Books of All Time; honorable mention: Robinson illustrated 1981 World's Best-Loved Books,

What follows below are 'classics' listings of those Easton Press and Folio Society (all-slipcased) publications that consumers, over the years, generally have come to 'prefer' to (or, perhaps, to esteem equally as) similarly titled Franklin editions, and also, in many cases, those titles which the Franklin Mint never invested itself to re-craft and/or publish in its brilliant, ever-discriminating fashion, for inclusion in its acclaimed Library.

If a varied and diverse library is what you seek, however, sample a few volumes of each complete 'Collectors' set, then select those Easton standard or 'Famous Editions' Dickens titles that are available, and finally mix it all up with the few elegant Franklin and Franklin/Oxford editions that were produced (perhaps even a Folio Heirloom Nonesuch edition title or two), and ... voil! ~ Instant Eclectic Dickens Library! Apropos to the 'Great Inimitable' himself, each volume suddenly boasts its own

'character'. Too many 'matching sets', after all, can get stale very quickly, and such colorful diversity looks awesome on a bookshelf. But if one's library space is small and one's budget shoestring (the rising norm everywhere it seems) alternatives are always welcome. Though not of Franklin or Easton quality, Barnes & Noble and Dalmation Press each produce growing libraries of handsome bonded-leather works that carry with them both spacial and financial economies. Some of these ~ for example, B&N's The Iliad & the Odyssey, The Yale Shakespeare, The Vampire Chronicles, Gray's Anatomy, The Complete Sherlock Holmes, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Wicked / Son of a Witch, or Dalmation's The Jungle Books, The Lost World, and Around the World In Eighty Days ~ when they are set beside bona fide leather creations look right at home and offer, in their own right, a splash of diversity and color to one's library, be it ever so humble.
