March 2012 Present Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Intelligent Pressure sore identification and alarming system design. Bournemouth University, UK Summary: This research project aims at designing an intelligent pressure sores detection
system that can alarm patients and health carers before the sores progress to ulceration level. Pressure sores develop when a large pressure is applied to an area of skin over a short period of time or when less force is applied over a longer period. Approximately 412,000 individuals develop a new pressure ulcer annually in the UK. The most recent study suggested that the total treatment cost to the health and social care system in the UK is 1.4-2.1 billion annually (4% of total NHS expenditure). The aim of the proposed research project is to design and deliver an intelligent pressure sores identification system that can be used while one is in lying down position. This can reduce the cost of care and will significantly improve healthcare outcomes and quality of life of vulnerable patients. The area of research is biomedical engineering which involves mechanical and electronic engineering for sensor design and computational techniques for data interpretation including clinical trial of the developed system.
