SECTION 02232 ROADWAY BASE

PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 A. DESCRIPTION OF WORK The extent of the work is shown on the drawings and includes restoring to original conditions the work disturbed during the execution of contract. The work includes the provision, spreading and compacting of roadway base in compliance with these specifications. Design shall be based on HS-2O truck loading requirement. Include appropriate impact allowance. Related Work: 1. 2. 1.2 A. Section 02513 Asphalt Concrete Paving. Section 02200 Earthwork

PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 A. ROADWAY BASE (GRANULAR BASE COURSE) General: Sound naturally occurring material, or angular crushed stone, clean and free from organic matter and unsuitable material or other deleterious substances and in such condition that it can be readily compacted under watering and rolling to form a firm and stable base. Requirements (Perform the following every 1000 cu m ): Gradation requirements of the roadway base material, when tested in accordance with ASTM C136 shall be as follows:

SUBGRADE INSPECTION AND APPROVAL Contractor shall inspect the subgrade elevations, grade, tolerance, dimensions, compaction and the conditions under which the roadway base work is to be performed and correct any unsatisfactory conditions immediately prior to placing base materials. Do not proceed with the work until approved by MARAFIQ and all unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to MARAFIQ. PLACING OF ROADWAY BASE AND SHOULDER MATERIAL Deliver roadway base and shoulder material as a uniform mixture and place on the road and shoulder bed by means of controlled mechanical spreader, and at a uniform quantity per linear meter and at a rate which will provide the required compacted thickness specified. Avoid segregation of material and material not uniform in mixture. Place material in compacted layers of approximately equal thickness. Unless otherwise approved, thickness is not to exceed 150 mm for any one layer. When placed in 2 or more layers, permit first layer to dry just sufficiently for stability during placing of the subsequent layer. Permit the completed base to dry just sufficient for stability during placing of any covering material.

COMPACTING AND GRADE TOLERANCE Compaction: Compact roadway base and shoulder, and every layer thereof to not less than 100% of maximum density in accordance with ASTM D1557, Method D. Test density of compacted base in accordance with ASTM D2167, ASTM D2922 or ASTM D1556. Conduct one test for each 2000 m2 of in-place material, but in no case less than three tests daily for each layer. Perform ASTM D1557 once for every 10 field density tests of ASTM D1556, ASTM D2922 or ASTM D2167. Grade Tolerance: The surface of the finished base shall not vary by more than + 10 mm when tested with a 3-meter straightedge and when placed on, and parallel or perpendicular to the center line of the roadway and the compacted base shall not vary by more than + 10 mm from the required elevation. Correct all depressions and humps exceeding the specified tolerances.
