Police
turn to
social
media
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Facebook isnt just a useful
tool for figuring out peoples
birthdays that youve long for-
gotten, its also a great way to
bring people to justice. The
Evesham Township Police De-
partments recent dedication
to increase its social media
presence is paying off, as its
Facebook page has more than
10,000 members and several ar-
rests have directly resulted
from information being posted
online through various
sources.
While the police depart-
ment has had an active Face-
book account for the past two
years, Sgt. Joseph Friel said
the department has increased
its presence on the social
media site since January, post-
ing police reports and wanted
suspects for incidents in the
township.
Its an easy way to get infor-
mation out to the public and to
bring leads back to police,
Friel said.
Its huge. I cant even ex-
plain to you the results were
getting. We built it in two
years and were about to hit

Members sought for twinning
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
A small organization with an
international grasp is looking for
more members and brave travel-
ers who want to spend a few
weeks overseas in the fall.
The Evesham Twinning Asso-
ciation is looking to strengthen
its ranks and introduce the South
Jersey residents to its twin city
Evesham, England.
Twinning originated in Europe
following World War II as a means
to bring people from different
countries together, said Steve
Royek, a member of the associa-
tion. The idea was that individ-
ual friendships would develop
and lead to greater understand-
ing and tolerance of one anoth-
er's cultures, and, on a grassroots
level, help prevent another con-
flict the magnitude of WWII, he
said.
Twinning is rare in the U.S.,
but it is quite common in Europe.
Most towns that are twinned
dont have the same name though,
Royek said.
We want to foster communica-
tion and relationships, he said.
Hopefully, down the line, we real-
ize were all human beings with
the same dreams and struggles.
The Evesham Twinning Asso-
ciation was created in 1989 after
an Evesham, N.J., municipal-tax
bill mysteriously ended up in
Evesham, England in the U.K.
The ETA oversees the formal
twin town relationship with its
U.K. namesake and also main-
tains a Friendship Link with the
town of Dreux, France. Twinning
members from all three towns

The Evesham Twinning Association is looking to strengthen its ranks and introduce the South Jersey residents to its twin city Evesham,
England. Several members of the association visited Evesham, England, in 2006. Interested in joining the association? Contact Steve Royek

The following incidents can be
found on file with the Evesham
Township Police Department:
On April 10, the Evesham Po-
lice responded to the unit block of
Brighton Drive for a reported
theft of jewelry.
Investigation determined that
while the suspect was visiting the
homeowners daughter he en-
tered the master bedroom and
stole $16,000 worth of jewelry. The
following day, investigators from
the Evesham Police Department
located the suspect while he was
in the act of selling the stolen jew-
elry to a pawnshop in Marlton.
The suspect was arrested and
the stolen property was later re-
turned to the victim.
A 21-year-old Marlton man was
charged with third-degree theft.
He was remanded to the Burling-
ton County Jail in default of
$10,000 bail.
On April 4, the Evesham Police
Department, through an ongoing
investigation into a rash of vehi-
cle burglaries, charged two sus-
pects with committing the
crimes. The vehicle burglaries in
question occurred in the Sanctu-
ary Development in March.
After posting the pictures of
both suspects on the depart-
ments Facebook page and asking
for the publics assistance in de-
termining their whereabouts, one
suspect turned himself in to po-
lice and the second was located at
a residence in Pine Hill, after po-
lice received an anonymous tip
stating the location he was hid-
ing.
A 20-year-old Pine Hill man has
been charged with third-degree
burglary and third--degree theft.
Bail was set at $10,000.
A second 20-year-old Pine Hill
man has been charged with third-
degree burglary and third-degree
theft. Bail was set at $10,000.
On April 6, at 7:07 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department respond-
ed to a home in the 200 block of
Conestoga Drive on a report of a
residential burglary-in-progress.
An investigation determined a
15-year-old girl was home alone
when she went to investigate a
suspicious noise coming from an
upstairs bedroom. As she entered
the hallway, an unknown man
wearing a ski mask and gloves ex-
ited the master bedroom carrying
jewelry. The burglar quickly exit-
ed the house and fled on foot to-
ward Greentree Road. The bur-
glar made entry into the house by
forcing open a rear door.
Evesham police ask anyone
who may have seen anyone or any
suspicious vehicles in the area of
the Woodstream Development be-
tween 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on April 6
to contact them at (856) 983-1116,
the Confidential Tip Line at (856)
983-4699 or email at
Facebook@Eveshampd.org.

On April 1, Evesham police re-
sponded to a residence in the unit
block of Balsam Way for a report-
ed theft of $4,000 worth of jewelry.
An investigation determined
an employee of Home Instead
Senior Health Care gained entry
to the home with a key, and then
stole the jewelry from the victim.
The jewelry was later sold for
cash at a We Buy Gold store in
Maple Shade.
On April 1, Evesham police ar-
rested a 46-year-old Moorestown
woman and charged her with
third-degree theft. She was re-
leased on her own recognizance,
police said.

in our opinion
M
oments after Rick Santorum
threw in the towel in his bid
to win the GOP presidential
nomination, the back and forth be-
tween President Obama and Mitt Rom-
ney began.
The Associated Press said the
Obama camp already is referring to
another Johnson-Goldwater cam-
paign. The Romney folks say the presi-
dent is trying to divide the country.
Obviously, these are critical issues
that are on the mind of every voter
(note sarcasm).
The bad news: We still have about
seven more months before Election
Day.
The good news: We have the
Olympics this summer to distract us
for a couple of weeks.
Maybe were being too pessimistic.
Maybe, this year, there will be a seri-
ous and thoughtful debate of the is-
sues, with both candidates presenting
their vision and ideas for the nation in
a respectful tone.
Or, maybe we get the 2012 versions
of Willie Horton, the Swift boat con-
troversy or a nuclear war scare (see
the aforementioned Johnson-Goldwa-
ter campaign). Hopefully, they wont
go all the way back to, say, 1828, when
allegations of murder and kidnapping
were bandied about.
The problem is that negative politi-
cal advertising works. It works well.
Ask Santorum and Newt Gingrich.
For whatever reason, voters respond
to personal attacks against candidates.
The more vicious, the better, it seems.
If it didnt work, the candidates would
stop doing it.
So thats the challenge for voters
this election year: If we want the can-
didates to act responsibly, discuss the
issues and generally treat voters with
the respect we deserve, we have to de-
mand it. If we want more of the same,
just continue to respond to the nega-
tive campaign ads.
Wed like to think that the candi-
dates will take the high road this year.
But were not holding our breath.
Seven months of this? Ugh
Petty shots between the president and his GOP challenger have begun
Go negative? It works
For all of the complaining about the
negativity and personal attacks in
political ads, the bottom line is that
they work. Voters respond to them.
Until that changes, expect more of
the same again this year.
10,000 fans. Because of this, the informa-
tion we post gets out to so many people in
the township so fast, he said. Everyone
who views this or shares it, they share it
with everyone that theyre friends with.
We recently had a hit-and-run to a pedestri-
an, and we had 600 shares with our friends,
then all of their friends had it. Over 100,000
people saw it within hours of the inci-
dent.
A few weeks ago on Thursday, April 5
Friel said the department posted an inci-
dent on its page about two suspects who
were involved in a burglary. The police de-
partment knew who the suspects were, he
said, but couldnt find where they had fled,
so they posted mug shots of the suspects
online and asked residents to contact the
department if they had information to
their whereabouts.
Within two hours, Friel said one of the
suspects called the police department and
said he would turn himself in over the
weekend if they took his picture down
from the Facebook page. He said his family
members were viewing the post and he did-
nt want anyone else to see it from his per-
sonal life, Friel said.
The suspect turned himself into police
on the weekend.
After his call, a resident contacted the
police department with an anonymous tip
about the whereabouts of the second sus-
pect. He was arrested within hours of the
call, Friel said.
These were simple posts on the Face-
book page that brought two burglary sus-
pects into custody, Friel said.
Its why the police department also
signed up for Nixle, which is a free service
that automatically sends updates out to
registered citizens on either their cell
phones or email accounts.
Nixle is a valuable tool for letting resi-
dents in a certain neighborhoods know in-
stantaneously if something is happening
or if police are looking for a suspect in
their development.
Nixle is very useful. We can put out a
quick text message to people in a certain
area if were chasing someone or looking
for a missing kid. Its good for getting more
eyes out there for us, Friel said.
Interested residents can sign up for
Nixle at www.nixle.com.
The foray into social media will contin-
ue, Friel said, as the department is current-
ly looking into creating its own YouTube
account. Videos of the police officers in ac-
tion and how residents can file a police re-
port will be the majority of files posted on
the site, Friel said.

The ETA also awards an annu-
al college scholarship to a local
matriculating high school stu-
dent, Royek said, who is interest-
ed in foreign languages and inter-
national studies. Currently, the
ETA has about 40 active mem-
bers.
Its a great way to build friend-
ship and understanding between
two cultures, Royek explained.
When you live with, or host
someone from, another country,
you really get an appreciation
that despite the ocean that sepa-
rates us were all pretty much
the same. We share similar val-
ues, similar challenges, similar
dreams.
Royek said a contingent of
local Evesham Township resi-
dents will be traveling to England
this fall to visit its Evesham coun-
terpart.
It will be Royeks second trip
the first of which he took in 2006
and it will be interesting to visit
the friends he stays in touch with
through the program.
Evesham, England, has a popu-
lation of a little more than 22,000
and is primarily an agricultural
hub, Royek said.
The town was founded in the
8th century around an abbey, of
which a bell tower still stands
today.
King Henry VIII destroyed the
huge church in the 16th century
during the Dissolution of the
Monasteries.
It was a massive structure.
When youre there, you can see
the foundation of the church. It
just goes on and on forever, but
the bell tower is still there,
Royek said. Its fascinating when
you realize how old the communi-
ty is.
The group is currently looking
for new members and will be
holding a special fundraiser on
Friday, April 20, at Marcos
Restaurant at the Indian Spring
Country Club in Marlton. The
doors open at 6:30 p.m. to give at-
tendees a chance to view the vari-
ous silent and bid auction items.
Dinner will be served and the cost
is $36 per person.

ation?

The OBrien sisters, of The
Tyanna Foundation, presented
the Virtua Foundation, in Eve-
sham Township, with a check for
$20,000 to support the Virtua
Breast Health Fund.
The Breast Health Fund pro-
vides breast cancer patients with
wigs, transportation to treatment,
assistance with medications and
other items and services that help
to provide the highest level of
comfort to patients in need.
We are incredibly grateful for
the partnership The OBrien sis-
ters have created to generate
meaningful funds that have a di-
rect impact on the families we
serve in this community, said
Rose McManus Coleman, vice
president of the Virtua Founda-
tion.
The Tyanna Foundation was
formed by the OBrien sisters in
1998 to honor their mother, Tyan-
na Barre OBrien, who lost her
battle with breast cancer at age
48. Each year, the organization
holds BreastFest events in five
states to increase awareness and
raise money for breast cancer re-
search, services, education, treat-
ment and patient care. The first
BreastFest event was held in 1999.
The money donated to Virtua
Foundation was raised during the
2011 BreastFest event, held at the
TapRoom and Grill in Haddon
Township on May 14, 2011. This
years BreastFest will be held on
Saturday, June 9 at the TapRoom
from 3 to 9 p.m.

The Evesham Township Police
Department is participating in
Operation Take Back New Jer-
sey on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. The department will be pro-
viding the public with a safe and
legal method for citizens of New
Jersey to dispose their unwanted,
unused, and expired medicines.
The mission of the Drug En-
forcement Administration (DEA)
New Jersey (N.J.) Division Opera-
tion Take Back N.J. is to provide a
safe and legal method for the citi-
zens of New Jersey to dispose
their unwanted, unused, and ex-
pired medicines.
Each year, experts say, a grow-
ing number of teenagers quietly
turn to a seemingly unlikely
source to score drugs their par-
ents medicine cabinets. Accord-
ing to the most recent studies,
Monitoring the Future, Universi-
ty of Michigan, between 1997 and
2007, treatment admissions for
prescription painkillers in-
creased more than 400 percent. In
addition, between 2004 and 2008,
the number of visits to hospital
emergency department involving
the non- medical use of narcotic
painkillers increased 111 percent.
The DEA NJ Division is
launching this initiative on Satur-
day, April 28, called Operation
Take Back New Jersey. This pro-
gram will afford state residents
the opportunity to rid their
homes of their unused, unwant-
ed, and expired medicine. Several
state county prescription drug
abuse task forces and focus
groups have recognized the need
for efficient, secure, and environ-
mentally sound methods to col-
lect and dispose of unused, un-
wanted, and expired medicine.
The goal of the program is to
allow the citizens of New Jersey
to deliver all of their unused, un-
wanted, or expired medications
to law enforcement officials who
can in turn dispose of these con-
trolled substances in a safe and
non-hazardous manner, prevent-
ing these pills from falling into
the hands of juveniles or into the
illicit market in our communi-
ties.
The program's website,
www.operationtakebacknj.com
will identify participating police
departments, collection sites, and
other program information. Pre-
vention and treatment organiza-
tions may be contacting their
local police departments to lend
their support for this initiative.
In 2009's Operation Medicine
Cabinet was launch in order to
combat the growing problem.
More than 400 police departments
and other law enforcement agen-
cies throughout New Jersey
helped collect 9,000 pounds of old,
unwanted pills, pain killers, anti-
depressants and other medica-
tions in an effort to keep teens
from looting their parents medi-
cine cabinets. Thats 4.5 tons of
medications. If sold on the street,
the drugs would have a value of
roughly $35 million. This pro-
gram the first of its kind in the
nation invited residents to scour
their medicine chests for unused,
unwanted prescription and over-
the-counter drugs and drop them
off for disposal.

Safely dispose of unwanted
prescription drugs on April 28
The Young Artists in Concert
will be held on Friday, April 20, at
7:30 p.m. at the Lord of Life
Lutheran Church in Tabernacle.
The program is designed to
showcase the areas highest level
of talented high school perform-
ers and will include instrumen-
talists, vocalists and pianists per-
forming everything from Bach to
Broadway selections.
All high school students resid-
ing in the Lenape Regional High
School District, and who attend
public or private schools, are eli-
gible to apply. All applicants
should be instrumentalists, pi-
anists and vocalists who have
studied privately and/or have ac-
quired some onstage solo experi-
ence. Each applicant is asked to
submit an application listing the
musicians most recent musical
accomplishments, along with a
recommendation from an instruc-
tor.
In addition to providing the
young artists with a large and
very appreciative audience, this
concert offers an opportunity for
them to get some extra use from
that solo that was used for region-
al tryouts or perhaps a college au-
dition. It also enables the student
a means of testing out a piece be-
fore a crucial audition, a tech-
nique many experienced musi-
cians have used successfully.
Since performers are not permit-
ted to use taped accompaniments,
each participant must provide
his/her own accompanist. At the
conclusion of the concert all per-
formers will receive a certificate
of appreciation for their partici-
pation.
Applications are available at
the Medford Township Recre-
ation Department or may be ob-
tained via email at
YAIC12@aol.com. All applications
must be returned by March 31.
Please direct all questions to the
above email address or contact
Dr. Anthony Femiano, at (609) 654-
1855.
Evesham Township has ex-
panded bulk collection to also in-
clude a special request service.
Beginning on April 16, the de-
partment of public works began
providing a special request or an
as needed collection service of
bulk trash for the residents of
Evesham.
The public works department
currently offers bulk trash collec-
tion four times per year during
the first week of January, April,
July and October.
Residents who have a need for a
bulk trash collection at a time
outside of the regularly sched-
uled collection dates can contact
the public works department to
take advantage of this service.
This is a fee based service with a
minimal service charge of $35 for
each requested collection.
To schedule collection resi-
dents may simply contact public
works during normal business
hours at (856) 983-2798.
To expedite the scheduling
process and provide residents
with additional payment options
online payment is also
available through the township
website.
Once payment has been re-
ceived by the public works depart-
ment, the collection will be sched-
uled to be completed within five
working days.
For additional information
about this new expanded pro-
gram, contact the Evesham Pub-
lic Works Department at 983-2798.
