The narrative essay is a personal story with a purpose.

For this essay, you will select a story from your life, decide why youre telling it, and describe the events as effectively as possible. Writing Skills The writing skills involved include the following: ~A strong, two-part thesis that clearly states the purpose of writing the essay. ~Use first person point of view; include the appropriate pronoun substitution. ~Use the appropriate Order of Writing (probably Order of Time), and include sufficient and appropriate transitional words within and between the paragraphs. ~You will revise for support, unity, and coherence. ~You will carefully craft the beginning and ending of your essay to have the most effective impact on the reader.

The Content In every life there are many events that spur emotions. Some events come from emotions. We often remember those days of our lives that make us proud, happy, excited and joyful. However, there are many emotions that we like to hide away. The days that come with---either born of or born fromthese emotions are ones we rarely revisit. They are hidden deep within the buried file folders of our memories. In this essay, you will need to resurrect one of those oft-forgotten events and make it into a narrative. Base your narrative on one of these emotions:

Shame, hysteria, frustration, jealousy, remorse, anxiety, melancholy, rage, bitterness, shock,
obsession, insecurity, pity or revulsion.

But dont just tell the story; tell it with a purpose. It could be anything. Just remember that you need to select a story of your and select a purpose for telling it. Remember to support your story with enough details to make it real. This is a narrative; it should read like watching a movie and appeal to all five senses. Show; dont just tell. The Details The essay should be at least 500 words and no more than 1500 words. Double space the essay, use 1 margins, include a heading that follows this pattern: Your Full Name ENGL 101 class time Professor Hargrove Day Month Year Narrative Include a header in the upper right hand side that includes your last name and the page number. No punctuation. This should not be on the first page. It will look like this: Hargrove 2

You will turn the essay in, with a copy of a rough draft stable BEHIND the final copy, to me at the beginning of class on ____________. Grading Base: 50 Pts possible I: Relates to an obvious emotion, thesis fits the qualification of a narrative D: Uses descriptive words, enough details to paint a movie. Show; dont tell. Interesting lead-in and conclusion. O: shows a good timeline. Uses sufficient transitional words within and between paragraphs E: First person point of view, tone is appropriate. M: no run ons, frags, comma splices, misspellings, or other mistakes. Rest of the breakdown is laid out in the rubric; these are just highlights for this essay.
