Description of Content

The LIMES Graduate School provides training for students in scientific areas which are highly interdisciplinary and interfacial by covering biology, chemistry and biomedicine. The MSc programme is part of a combined MSc/doctoral programme of the LIMES biocentre. One of four different focal areas can be chosen: - Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry; - Development, Genetics and Molecular Physiology; - Molecular Immune and Cell Biology; - Membrane Biology and Biochemistry. Experience in the most modern and exciting combinatorial chemistry technologies, biomolecular analyses, imaging technologies and model organisms (mouse, Drosophila) is provided.

Educational Organisation

The Master's phase of the programme comprises lectures, tutorials, seminars, methods courses, and independent research projects (laboratory rotations). It is an interdisciplinary pre-doctoral training programme that prepares students for solving scientific problems using both chemical and biological approaches. The schedule of the programme lasts for one and a half year in total, is divided into three phases and is completed by an experimental Master's thesis. I Orientation Phase This phase starts in October and lasts about three weeks - the aim is to provide orientation help to the students, which is provided by the Coordination Office of the Graduate School and by the International Office. II Methods Courses During the first months (Oct-Dec) of the Molecular Biology programme, all students participate in a series of introductory methods courses. They learn fundamental techniques applied in current research and meet members of the participating research groups. The methods courses comprise 18 two-day experiments and are conducted in small groups. Supervision is provided by the PhD students of the programme. The aim of this phase is to familiarise the students, with the help of short methods courses, with major techniques applied by the research groups that participate in the Graduate School programme. III Lab Rotations Starting in January, every student conducts three research projects (lab rotations) in the participating departments, chosen from different fields. Each project is individually supervised. It involves seven weeks of experimental work, followed by one week of data analysis and a written lab report in the format of a scientific research publication. Results of the first two projects are presented in a seminar. Lectures and Tutorials Attendance at lectures (four hours per week) and tutorials (four hours per week), which are given by the faculty of the programme throughout the first year of the Master's programme, is mandatory for students of the Master's phase of the programme. PhD students supervise the tutorials in the context of their teaching duties. Electives Basic and advanced language courses will be offered in German and English by the International Office of the University of Bonn. Furthermore, the Asia Centre of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Bonn will offer Asian language and culture training to prepare students for an exchange with our Asian partners. All language courses are optional and free of charge for students of the Graduate School. Students will obtain advanced training in Biophysical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Membrane Biology, Organic/Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemoinformatics and Structural Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Genetics, Molecular Immunology and Molecular Pathology. Furthermore, additional training in new techniques, such as biological and chemical combinatorial methods, modelling of protein-ligand and proteinprotein interactions, chemical and biological approaches to define interaction of partner molecules in vivo and in vitro, will be taught.

Master's thesis The Master's phase is concluded by a six-month Master's thesis (total duration of the programme: 1.5 years). This can be conducted in the departments of the LIMES Institute or its partner institutions. The thesis project involves experimental work under the supervision of a faculty member of the Graduate School. Excellent students who have passed the Master's phase of the programme can be selected to enter the doctoral phase of the combined MSc/doctoral programme.
Forms of Assessment

The degree Master of Life & Medical Sciences is conferred if and when the candidate has received the required credits for the first segment of the programme, has passed the examinations at the end of the first segment, and has successfully completed the Master's thesis (in total 120 credits). The degree is awarded by the Faculty of Natural Sciences through the Division ("Fachgruppe") Molecular Biomedicine.
Study Abroad Unit(s)

The students benefit from the school's international research connections. Thanks to collaborations with LIMES partner institutions, participants may also complete part of their MSc thesis work abroad.

Course Objectives

The intensive, r esearch-oriented education qualifies students for professional work in the fields of molecular biosciences and biomedicine and contributes to bridging the educational gap between chemistry, biology and medicine. Costs, Fees and Funding (read more)
Tuition Fees

No tuition fees
Enrolment Fees

Students must pay a social fee of 230 EUR per semester ("Sozialbeitrag") to the Students' Union, which is used to support student activities and provides free public transport in the region.

Costs of Living

We recommend a budget of around 750 EUR per month for accommodation, cost of living, health insurance, books and miscellaneous expenses.
Job Opportunities

Job opportunities for some students are available (e.g. help in preparing teaching and lab courses). With its strong focus on biomedical research, the University of Bonn and the University Hospital offer several interesting opportunities to work closely with experimental researchers. In addition, the ABCD region (Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Dsseldorf) is home to many prospective employers, including global players such as "Bayer", as well as many highly specialised medium-sized companies such as "Grnenthal".
