Oral Communication

Invention Product Speech, assembly

Video Self-Evaluation
Review the videotape of your speech. As you watch, answer the following questions. 1. How did you try to get the audiences attention? How effective was it?

Mandy Wang

Because my invention product was a common goods that people would use it in their daily life. Therefore, I hinted audiences my product contains the unique ingredients. I think that didn't effect that much since they already knew what facial cream was.
2. Did you clearly communicate your purpose (e.g. I am going to inform/convince you about/to)? How did you motivate your audience to listen to you? Yes, I did mention the purpose of giving this invention speech, however I don't think I communicate it as clear as a standard purpose should look like, I am way too far below the standard. my standard speech is to delivery all the information clearly and do not have any uncomfortable feeling when speaking, then you can speak and express your ideas freely. I did motivate audience to listen to me, bit that wasn't too strong to lure their interest to listen. How was your speech organized? How clearly/logically did it progress? Could I stop paying attention to you and read your outline instead and still follow along easily? I remembered I said that I am more amazing than the paper work, it is true, but this time, I wanted to switch my answer. My speech was bad this time, paper outline wouldl be better for you to imagined I am on the stage and speaking. Anyways, my outline was organized logically, and I think I did a better outline than last time, the skill of writing a outline had progressed. but my speech wasn't quite logical and organized, it just like stuffs had been thrown together within a speech length time. What were some of the transition words you used in your speech? Did you clearly indicate movement from one part of your speech to another? Why/why not?
When I looked at my speech video, I was so surprised that I mixed up my speech by saying the same thing over and over again. I had counted it, I said that my facial cream is made from Chinese herbs and aromas at least two times. That is so annoying to both audiences and me. Because I forgot what I wanted to said on the stage, I just said words that came from the top of my head, and those random words mixed my speech up so well that I did not even dare to tell people it was my speech for the whole school.

Explain why your main points were/were not clearly presented.

I remembered that I was too nervous to speak that day, and also I did not memorize the entire speech well. If I did memorize the speech, I think I could delivery the main point of the facial cream to audiences.
6. Evaluate your conclusion. Did it connect seamlessly with the introduction and body? Did you give a clear sense of ending?

I think my conclusion has connect both part of introduction and body. At the very end of the conclusion, I remain audience again the advantage of buying the cream right away. I mentioned that advantage in the last point of body. So, I assume thqt my conclusion has a little clear sense of ending, but as much as the standard.
7. Evaluate your delivery. Were you loud enough/clear enough/energetic enough/varying your tone enough/connecting to your whole audience enough?

Those are issues that I need to work on hardly for giving better speech next time. First, i was satisfy with my voice, it was loud enough( that's the only thing I am satisfy with). again, I did not clearly delivery what I wanted audiences to understand in my speech. In the speech, I was trying so hard to make myself look energetic, sounds hyper in my speech, but I think I failed in doing that. I didn't know what exactly body language would make audiences feel I am interesting in my product.

How did your use of voice, gestures, and bodily action enhance (or detract) from the message of your speech? What will you do to enhance the message of your speaking opportunities? In the speech, I sometimes enhanced the volume of speaking when I speak some certain ward, such as the name of the facial cream and the extra discount of the product. I didn't use too much body languages and special gesture, except for the demo part. I think that was the biggest error I made in this speech. Next time, I will not enhance the volume of my speaking randomly, that will makes non sense when use it too much. Did you appear sincerely interested and enthusiastic in the topic (your classmate) and in your talking with your audience? What did your body language and eye contact say to your audience? Give examples to support your answers. All message I passed to audiences was that I was so so nervous that I couldn't speak very well. Words that came out from my mouth were just many fragment vocabularies that didn't sounds like a well-arranged grammatical sentence. For example, I said the first sentence of the speech twice. It was the result of too nervous. That gave audiences an important information, this speaker was not profession in her product and this must be a boring speech. Evaluate the overall success of this speech. What grade (A-F) would you assign this presentation? Why?
Currently, I would give myself an F on this speech. I did not memorize speech well is the error that I cannot tolerate myself to make, I also consider it is the basic element that I need to include in every of my speech, this is the worst speech I have ever done so far. But, I am a student who struggles in home works tests and, SPEECHES. It's very logical for me wanting a high grade even if I did it badly. So, if you really give me an F, I will cry out loud under the bottom of my bed until you heard it.

Describe what you have learned from this speaking opportunity, and how you will use this information in the future. Even through I was as good as a assembly speaker should looked like, I wanted to admit this that it was a great opportunity to me. I had a chance to give my speech to a big ,ass of people, it was not a serious work place, it was an learning environment that was created for me. I should held this experience and remembered shortcomings of the speaking skill. If I have the same opportunity next time, I must compare both experiences and see whether I have progress. What did you learn from this presentation that will help you prepare your future speech? List at least three things that you plan on working on. (To just practice is not a specific step exactly how will you practice?) a. Nervous: my nervous system will lose the ability of self control when face so many people and they all listen to me silently. I should make a stage, read my speech on it, and in front of me is a big vacant land (I can find the ideal place at the front of my house), or maybe, put something on that vacant land to portend like human. b. Cleverness: I hate myself is always in the shortage of cleverness. Of course, I will nervous when speaks in front of so many people, but I think that's pretty normal for those who are first time give speech in a big assembly room, like me. I see almost every classmates has cleverness. When they forgot sentences they memorized, they can still speak freely and calmly, except me. I think I can practice improvise speech to strong my cleverness. c.

Memory ability: speech outline is very easy to be done before the last moment you go onto stage Speaker is free to write details of the outline, more details get audiences to understand your topic more and agree your thought. Who don't want to gain audiences' agreement, everyone wants. Because that's the final goal of each public speakers. I think if a speaker memorize speech well, they can act more naturally when speaking, then convince audiences whatever the speaker want them to do. I need to straighten this part. The only method I think about is to read the outline more times.

13.

I made tones of mistakes this time. I realize that I still need to improve a lot. The first thing I will do after the outline is done is to read it on the fake stage, portend I am giving a speech with a well-memory lingual speaking, and feel how does it like, then I will like to think about the ideal speech that I want to present in front of audiences, later stand a goal for my final one and then practice my speech (each practice can closer to my goal). Also, I will try to forgot some part of it and see if I can made up some random sentences to complete the speech.

Describe, in detail, the areas you will improve your public speaking and exactly how you will improve. Include a variety of specific steps you will take to improve your public speaking skills.
