INTEGRATED PROJECT (KKKR2034, KKKR2454, KKKR2324, KKKR2364 & KKKB2424) Semester II, 2011-2012 Based on the product assigned for your group, prepare a report on the following: Task No. 1 Common Literature studies on the product usage, demand vs supply, future marketing potential and sources of raw materials, waste generation, any environmental issues such as discharge limit and relevant environmental act and safety precaution taken during the production process. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be included in the Appendix. Prepare a process flow diagram (PFD) using standard engineering drawing symbols. Implement the usage of engineering design softwares such as autocad or visio. Describe the process flow stream by stream from the Input to the Output Based on the PFD, perform a heat and a mass balance on the reactor unit. Use the figure obtained from the demand vs supply profile to determine the feed throughput (mass flow rate) Compare your results with Superpro and/or ICON simulation. 4 KKKR2364 KK & KB Describe the transport phenomena of the heat and mass transfer in the reactor OR bioreactor. Support your descriptions by stating the appropriate equations and data related to the heat and mass transfer properties, parameters and the type of geometry employed: i) Heat Transfer in a reactor OR bioreactor Describe the heat conduction and convection transfer (and radiation if applicable only) processes involved. Some schematic diagrams with appropriate heat transfer profile in 2D (x-y) or 3D (x-y-z) of the process description should be presented. Identify the factors influencing the heat transfer rate in your process. Conduct some calculations if necessary to determine the heat flux/heat transfer rate, heat transfer coefficients and other important supporting parameters (dimensionless numbers, etc). ii) Mass Transfer in a reactor OR bioreactor: Describe the mass transfer processes by molecular diffusion or convective mass transfer (as well as Non-Fickian diffusion if applicable only). Some schematic diagrams with appropriate mass transfer profile in 2D (x-y) or 3D (x-y-z) of the process description should be presented. Identify the factors influencing the mass transfer rates in your process. Conduct some calculations if necessary to determine the mass flux, diffusion coefficients and other important supporting parameters (dimensionless numbers, etc). Design a suitable reactor/bioreactor unit for the particular process and state the reasons for your choice. Derive the general mole balance or mass balance equation for the reactor/bioreactor system and include the kinetic rate expression whenever necessary. If this particular process requires the use of a catalyst/biocatalyst, please justify your catalyst/biocatalyst choice. Specify any byproduct of the process. Suggest the separation method of the main product from its impurities and indicate a way of stabilizing these products in the final stream. Design a separation unit or units (distillation, absorption/stripping or liquid-liquid extraction) to treat a stream which produces vapour/gas-liquid or liquid-liquid products and justify its usage. For a selected separation unit, choose a column type (tray or packed) and describe the separation mechanism involved. Then determine the number of degrees of freedom and variables specification for that particular separation unit. You are also required to determine the process design in terms of temperature, pressure, flow rates, compositions and heat duty (for column, heating, cooling). Do the mass balance (component and total) on the unit and compare your results with Superpro and/or ICON simulation. Finally, determine the structural design such as the tray/packing type and design, number of stages/transfer units, column diameter and height.

Write computer codes using MATLAB software in order to create a mass balance calculation program for one of these three options: (1) reactor unit, (2) bioreactor unit or (3) main separation unit in your process. The program should be able to determine the outputs of the unit should a user enters the required inputs. Use your creativity to produce the outputs which may be in the form of tables of data or/and graphs or etc.

The report must be presented according to the Panduan Penulisan Tesis Gaya UKM (2009) format.

Each KK and KB group has to submit 4 copies of preliminary reports assigned to each of the course lecturers to Pejabat Am JKKP on Wednesday, 25 April 2012, Week 9, no later than 5 pm. Then, the lecturers will return the reports along with the feedbacks and comments to the students in Week 10.

The complete first draft (4 copies for KK and 4 copies for KB) integrated project report is to be submitted on Wednesday, 16 May 2012, Week 12. The report should contain no more than 50 pages excluding the Appendices.
