ROBERT J. AND HELEN C. KLEBERG SOUTH TEXAS HERITAGE CENTER AT THE WITTE MUSEUM:
Architectural Fact Sheet
The Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center at the Witte Museum in San Antonio combines the historic architecture of 1930's-era Pioneer Hall with a dramatic new structure designed by San Antonio architectural firm Ford, Powell & Carson. With the 11,000-square-foot Pioneer Hall and the new 9,000-square-foot addition, the total square footage is just over 20,000 square feet. The primary architectural goal with this structure is to fully integrate the new South Texas Heritage Center within the fabric of the Master Plan for the expansion and unification of the Witte Museum campus. Blending the Old with the New The transformation and restoration of the historic Pioneer Hall building combines with the new portion of the South Texas Heritage Center to create a seamless facility in which to showcase the Witte Museums treasured collections of South Texas artifacts. The glass atrium of the new section draws in appealing natural light and offers unobstructed views of the outside gardens and natural limestone amphitheater. The design concept for the South Texas Heritage Center integrates the existing river frontage of the existing campus buildings using pedestrian walkways through zones of native Texas plants to a rustic and natural amphitheater. With splendid views of the San Antonio River and portions of the natural South Texas terrain of Brackenridge Park, the facilitys design embraces and reflects the new Center's focus on the South Texas landscape and how it shaped the lives of the people here.

The Witte Research & Collections Center is currently in the design phase. The renovation is scheduled for completion within the next 12-14 months.

The New Witte: More Expansion and Updates on the Horizon Both the South Texas Heritage Center and the Witte Research & Collections Center comprise Phase 1 of the Wittes Capital Campaign. Phase 2 of the Capital Campaign is in design. Plans are to complete The New Witte in 2013. The New Witte will include: A major new museum entrance in the Valero Great Hall to welcome visitors; The complete renovation of the 85-year-old main building; The creation of a new entrance and orientation gallery to San Antonio; The addition of a new Exhibitions and Special Events Hall so that the Witte can bring blockbuster exhibitions to San Antonio; And the inclusion of an aqueduct that links an excavated 1719 Acequia Madre to Broadway in a dynamic water feature with adjoining riverside wetlands. The New Witte will reinvigorate the Wittes historic main building into a functional modern facility, becoming a destination for visitors near and far.
