Best Chess News Websites

2011, Hace 1 hora | William

Technology has changed so much about chess in the last two or three decades that it can be pretty t ugh t f gu ut what xactl a th st ch ss w s t s. Th s t xactl a l g t at reference to online chess information. So I decided to compile my experience and research to publish this article about the Best Chess News Websites.

Internet Chess Club (ICC)

Internet Chess Club (ICC)

The Internet Chess Club began in 1995 with the intention of revolutionizing how chess was played online. In the last 15 years, ICC has become the leading online chess server via the high quality of ts pla g s ftwa a a st at . W th sp ct t th ICCs w s t a ch ss ws coverage, ICC is without equal. Flaunting the highest concentration of top Grandmasters (Larry Christiansen, Peter Svidler, Yasser Seirawan, Ronen Har-Zvi, Alex Yermolinsky, Joel Benjamin, etc..) ICC is always providing analysis of the highest quality. Not only is ICC covering nearly all major chess events, the Internet Chess Club is streaming these events live with corresponding Grandmaster commentary. Aside from all the GM commentary and instructive videos Chessclub.com also offers excellent tactical and endgame training programs as part of their package, not to mention a very user-friendly playing interface on a server that boasts the most titled players in the world! The only downside about ICC is that to receive the majority of the services they offer, you have to be a member which costs $69.95/year. The membership is kind of pricy, however I think the benefits far outweigh the cost.

Chessdom

Chessdom

Chessdom is a close runner-up to ICC, in that they provide coverage of the latest chess events with excellent consistency. While ICC dedicates a large amount of energy to providing Grandmaster a al s s f g g ga s Ch ss s f cus s cat t g al ts a ws coverage. GM Henrik Danielsen has certainly produced a number of high quality video analyses

for Chessdom, however th aj t f th pu l sh sa t ws w th th w l s st players. Within 24 hours of nearly every major event, Chessdom has somehow completed and published interviews with nearly every top player in the tournament. Chessdom specializes in publishing the most current chess news, interviews, and analysis of recent games and they do an incredible job of relaying this information to their viewers for Free! On a side note, Chessdom just finished redesigning and optimizing their entire website making it much easier to navigate and get the info you want.

Chess.com

Chess.com

Chess.com is the premier chess website for beginners, combining an easy-to-use interface with analysis by titled players directed towards beginner to intermediate chess players. Aside from their tactics training and chess opening sections, players of any level can take full advantage of the multiple videos that their qualified staff has produced. Here are my favorite GMs of the near dozen titled players that work with Chess.com Sam Shankland, Alex Lenderman, Josh Friedel, Euguene Perelshteyn, and Roman Dzindzichashvili. But enough of that this article is talking about chess news, and Chess.com certainly does a good job of covering it in their News Section. You can also get a lot of behind-the-scenes details and extra information on their Forums Section, which features one of the biggest online chess forums in the world today. The majority of Ch ss.c s s c sa f (w th a s) alth ugh a f th VIP p ivileges do require a membership fee. The Week in Chess (TWiC)

The Week in Chess (TWiC)

The Week in Chess was one of the very first chess news websites, started by Mark Crowther in 1994. The Week in Chess provides the most frequent updates on the happenings of the chess world, containing game .pgns and results for every possible chess tournament of interest. The Week in Chess (TWiC) has established a remarkable reputation of consistency over the last 15+ years, and even better they do it for free! IM Malcolm Pein does a fantastic job of contributing expert analysis, however one man simply cannot compete with the super-teams assembled by the www.chessclub.com, www.chessdom.com, and www.chess.com. If you are an experienced player

that prefers to analyze on your own, then The Week in Chess is your one-stop shop for constantly updated results and easily downloadable game pgns.

ChessVibes

ChessVibes

ChessVibes offers an interesting perspective on the concept of chess news, providing a different take from opinionated journalists/bloggers Peter Doggers, Thomas Richter, Arne Moll, and others. ChessVibes does a great job of presenting behind-the-scenes info with tongue-in-cheek analysis, resulting in an easy-to- a l g a ut th w l s st pla s a vents. While ChessVibes does not offer as many comprehensive perks as the aforementioned chess websites, they represent a great chess news site that is definitely worth checking out.

In this article, Stephen Jones from ChessCreator.com, presents 3 deceptively devious, devilishly delicious, and downright dastardly Queen traps. In 3 simple-to-understand videos, each with its own short narrative, we see the true value of that age-old Chess maxim to not develop the Queen, too quickly.

Why do we love to learn Queen traps?

Queen traps are always a risky endeavor!

As we learn and then begin to improve at Chess, we soon realize that not all games end in Checkmate. Instead we find that even decisive games, more commonly end in resignation. Perhaps, one opponent loses material, has an unfavourable position, or both to the extent that their winning or drawing chances are deemed to be relatively non-existent. Instead of playing on in a miserable, hopeless, and depressing position, they do the honourable thing resign.

I a gst all f th s th t app g f s pp ts Qu in return for a Rook, Bishop or Knight is, after checkmate itself, perhaps the most coveted of all such prizes.

fond of Chess traps: naughty little tricks that result

Before we go through 3 deceptively devious, devilishly delicious, and downright dastardly Queen t aps ts w th g u s l s again of the age-old maxim t t l p s Qu too soon (e.g. 2.Qh5 or 2.Qf3) where she can be attacked, harassed, or even captured.

As this article and the videos will undoubtedly demonstrate, bringing the Queen into the game too early can prove fatal. Often, ts t pt g f g s t g th ul -of-thumb. After all, the Queen is the strongest piece, and is all powerful, all conquering, right? Well, sit back and watch the videos and see for yourself, examples of how things can go horribly wrong for her Majesty.

Queen Trap 1: French defence, Rubinstien, Fort Knox variation In our first example, we see the basics of, and a trapping line in, the French defence, Rubinstien, Fort Knox variation (1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4) where Black plays 5. B 7 t g Bc6. This has the reputation of being an ultra-solid, almost system-like opening, and very hard for White to prove an advantage. In this particular case, the Queen trap occurs if Black plays carelessly, without due regard for the correct move order, with Nf6 before Nd7 and/or Be7.

Queen Trap 2: Petroff defence, Steinitz variation with 3.d4 Of course, traps exist on both sides of the board! A Queen trap is also found in the Petroff f c St tz a at w th . 4. Th P t ff s als call P t s f s th Russ a Game. The trap runs 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 exd4 4.e5 Ne4 5.Qxd4 d5 6.Nc3 Bc5 7.Qxd5?? Bxf2+!! This leaves White the unpleasant choice of Ke1 or Kd2, after which Black responds Nc3+ winning Wh t s Qu !

Once again, her royal Highness is captured in under 10 moves: We are not amused!

In the last of our Queen traps, we turn our attention to the Scandinavian defence, otherwise known as the Center Counter defence. 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Bd2 Nc6 6.Bb5 Bd7 7.Nd5!! Once again, the dubious move is Nc6 th s t 5. Nc6?? instead of c6. As with th p us xa pl s ts a s pl ut astat g Qu t ap!

Ouch! So, what can we learn from these 3 short, sharp and ruthless Queen traps?

Can we protect her royal Highness from harm? The critical thing to keep in mind about traps and, even with Queen traps is, they often exist even within the most sound, solid openings in the heat of battle, we should never take anything for granted. After all, the unexpected nature of traps s pa t a pa c l f wh th t aps! As w s h h Maj st fac s cl a a p s t a g th F ch P t ff / P t (Russian Game) and Scandinavian (Center-Counter) defences: of course, numerous other traps exist and, so how can they be avoided?

Perhaps the easiest thing to do here would be for us all to simply respect the age-old rule of not developing the Queen too early or, perhaps as us English folk would say: God save the Queen!
