Katherine Stehr (213) 241 - 0148 mCLASS: DIBELS Next Data Analysis for Instructional Leaders Session 2 - Closing the Gap: Date: April 20, 2012 Location: Harbor Building Time: two morning sessions / 25 participants in each session and one afternoon session / 27 participants Participants: School site Administrator (a designee may attend but it is highly recommended that the administrator of the school site attend) Focus: This session elaborates on the data analysis and data conversations begun in the previous session. Participants explore the kinds of aggregate data reports available to them in the Reporting and Analysis Suite and apply an action research process using these aggregate reports to identify students not making adequate progress to advance class and student performance. This session continues to demonstrate the importance for instructional leaders to establish clear processes to analyze assessment data. During this session, participants focus implementation and evaluation of differentiated instruction, on how to sustain differentiated instruction from one year to the next. Participants also use Reporting and Analysis Suite data to investigate school needs. Registration on the Learning Zone began on March 29, 2012. Instructional Seminar: April 26, 2012 AM and PM Sessions Harbor Building Focus: Constructed Response on the Literacy Periodic Assessments (LPAs). Two sessions will be offered on that day; a morning and an afternoon session. Registration is required on the Learning Zone and it is available beginning April 10, 2012. Algebra 1 Year-Long Course: Please review REF-5717 (dated March 19, 2012) for the guidelines on the new Algebra 1 year-long course. Students in middle school and students who are taking Algebra 1 for the first time high school will earn 10 credits for the entire course rather than semester by semester. Semester classes will continue to be offered for students currently in Algebra 1AB sequence. If a school decides to use their own data-driven placement policy, please submit a waiver (Attachment A/REF5720) for approval to the Local District Superintendent and to the Executive Director of OCISS by June 15, 2012. Students in middle school who did not meet the two criteria will not earn high school graduation credit, and might need to repeat Algebra 1. Please review BUL-5325.1 (dated march 19, 2012) for implementation guidelines and changes in the policy:

1. Students who receive a grade of D and meet one of the assessment criteria may be enrolled in Algebra 2 or Geometry. 2. All middle school parents and guardians must be notified regarding this policy change. Schools are directed to send the parent notification (Attachment A/BUL-5325.1) to all parents and guardians of the students enrolled in their schools. Diagnostic Assessments in Grades 5 and 8: Elementary schools will continue to administer the fifth grade Diagnostic Assessment to all 5th grade students. Middle schools will administer the eighth grade Diagnostic Assessment to all 8th grade students enrolled in Algebra Readiness or in Algebra 1A. Schools will receive testing materials from CoreK12 two weeks prior to the assessment window: April 24 26, 2012 Fifth Grade Single Track and Tracks A & C at Four-Track Schools Eighth Grade Single Track Schools For instructions on the administration, scoring and accessing the data from the diagnostic assessments, please review MEM-5722 (dated March 19, 2012).

Tools, explore beginning of the year (BOY) and end of year (EOY) comparison reports as well as other pertinent reports and practice accessing both on our own. Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts in Kindergarten (1:00 - 3:00 p.m./Room 204) This session will explore the content of the CCSS for Kindergarten in depth in preparation for full implementation. Our driving questions will be: What do the CCSS want students to learn? How will we know they have learned it? Secondary Implementing ALEKS (1:00 3:00 p.m./Room 212) The purpose of this session is to improve implementation of the ALEKS math intervention program. Program Improvement Single Plan Due Date: April 13, 2012 Each Program Improvement (PI) school is required to evaluate, revise, update or re-write their single plan based on the PI Year: Year 2 SPSA Annual Evaluation (online) and the single plan update pages to address the Performance Meter Goals. Year 4 Entire single plan including the School Restructuring Decision page. Year 5 SPSA Annual Evaluation (online) and the single plan update pages to address the Performance Meter Goals. District Wide Title III Coach Meeting #4: April 27, 2012 (please note change of date) Time: 12:30 3:30 p.m. Location: TBD Participants: Title III Coaches assigned to Program Improvement 5+ Schools Single Plan Annual Evaluation: The School Site Council (SSC) must annually evaluate the effectiveness of categorical expenditures described in the single plan. The annual evaluation must be completed online. Please review MEM-4631.4 (dated November 10, 2011) for specific steps and instructions to follow. A copy of the Evaluation must be included in the Assurances and Justification Pages. Elementary Transfer Data to Middle Schools: The Office of Data & Accountability will automatically transfer student data from the elementary schools (grades 5/6) to the receiving resident middle schools. The data for matriculating students must be entered into SIS at the elementary school for the electronic transfers on: May 4, 2012 Please review REF-3490.7 (dated February 13, 2012) for specific directions and assistance. Reminder: first day of school on the early start calendar is tentatively scheduled on August 14, 2012. Assessment of 5th/6th Grade ELs for Placement in MS ELD/ESL Curriculum: For appropriate placement in English Language Arts or English Language Development middle school curriculum, all fifth/sixth grade matriculating English Learners (ELs), ELD levels 1 5, will take the Diagnosis and Placement Inventory (DPI): April 2 20, 2012 Tracks A & C Exception: EL who has a current CST/ELA score of Basic, Proficient or Advanced and a current CELDT overall level of 3, 4 or 5. The DPI date and level must be entered into SIS after the students are tested but no later than one week after the close of the testing window: April 27, 2012 Tracks A & C For assessment procedures and guidelines, please review MEM-5707 (dated February 10, 2012). Maze Measures Diagnostic Assessments for 5th/6th and 8th Grades: To provide a uniform and systematic assessment system for students preparing to move from elementary to middle and middle to high school, LAUSD developed the Maze Measure as a diagnostic assessment in ELA for 5 th/6th and 8th grade students. MEM-5425 (dated March 2, 2012) provides the guidelines in the administration and scoring of the Maze Measure diagnostic assessment. The Diagnosis and Placement Inventory (DPI) for English Learners remains in effect as outlined in REF-3490.6 (dated February 13, 2012).
