PREFACE
Any kind of learning is incomplete till it is practically applied in the concerned field. Only then does a person understand and get hold of even the minutest details of what he/she has learnt in his stay at the institute doing his/her MBA. So, to practically apply what I had gained in the past one year in the MBA programme, I underwent two months summer training at Wipro Infotech.

It has been a wonderful learning experience, which has given me an insight into Management of modern business which requires an appreciation of multidisciplinary concept and in-depth knowledge of specific analytical tools, geared to the solution of real life problems. No doubt every real situation is unique but a set of theoretical tools of knowledge, itself based on empirical foundation, can help in developing the mechanism for handling such situation. So the MBA curriculum has been desired to provide to the future managers ample practical exposure to the business world.

The summer training is essential for the fulfillment of MBA curriculum; it provides an opportunity to the student to understand the industry with special emphasis on the development of skills in analyzing interpreting practical problems through application of management.

INFORMATION

TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

Information technology has found its own place in the field of education. It was earlier thought that information technology would make people more dependent on computers but it has resulted in a number of advantages. Technology has resulted in increased interaction between the students and the use of newer ways of educating them. If information technology is not used in a proper manner then it can be worse than the older technologies used in education. The students can make use of computers to do their regular practice sessions and drills, which is similar to their workbooks. Moreover with the use of information technology teachers can make their lectures more attractive and colorful helping students to understand better.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

In the past 15 years the schools in United States has increased their budget to focus on classroom technology to as much as $5 billion per annum. This is because of the fact that

Page 10

government and the educational experts believe that the use of information technology in education can result in improved learning. However there is one point that is constantly being argued on as to whether the use of information technology will pose as a challenge to the critical thinking capacity of the students. This particular issue is under scan and there are a lot of researches going on. But still when compared to the advantages that information technology focuses in education is more as compared to the issues that are brought into notice. With the use of information technology in educational institutes the communication servers have made it easy for the teachers to inform the parents about the absence of their children and their performance. It has also helped the teachers in solving various issues related to homework assistance.

OVERVIEW OF WIPRO LTD

Wipro started as a vegetable oil company in 1947 from an old mill founded by Azim Premji's father. When his father died in 1966, Azim, a graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, took on the leadership of the company at the age 21. He repositioned it and transformed Wipro (Western India Vegetable Products Ltd) into a consumer goods company that produced hydrogenated cooking oils/fat company, laundry soap, wax and tin containers and later set up Wipro Fluid Power to manufacture hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders in 1975. At that time, it was valued at $2 million.

In 1977, when IBM was asked to leave India, Wipro entered the information technology sector. In 1979, Wipro began developing its own computers and in 1981, started selling the finished product. This was the first in a string of products that would make Wipro one of India's first computer makers. The company licensed technology from Sentinel Computers in the United States and began building India's first mini-computers. Wipro hired managers who were computer savvy, and strong on business experience.

In 1980 Wipro moved in software development and started developing customized software packages for their hardware customers. This expanded their IT business and subsequently invented

Page 12

The government has selected Wipro InfoTech to develop software for digitizing its crime and criminal tracking network system under the national e-governance plan, the IT bellwether said. As the Home Ministry's software development agency, the company will link 14,000 police stations and 6,000 police offices across the country for tracking crime records on real-time basis in digital format.

Page 19

"The system aims to create a nationwide networked infrastructure for IT-enabled criminal tracking system. Spanning across 35 states and union territories, it will link about 14,000 police stations and 6,000 higher police offices across the country," Wipro vice-president Anand Sankaran said in a statement. The company, however, did not specify the project cost, maintaining non-disclosure agreement with the ministry. Last year, Wipro had developed a 'Police Information System' to cover important activities related to day-to-day functioning of police departments, including back-end administrative process of general administration, finance, stores etc. The ambitious criminal tracking network project includes vertical connectivity of police units at various levels within the state and between states and union territories as well as horizontal connectivity, linking police functions at state and central levels to external entities. As one of the largest e-governance projects in the country, the network system will also present a citizen-interface to provide basic services to citizens. "As part of the scope, we will develop the core application software for states and another core application for the central government to digitize crime and criminal records," Sankaran pointed out. The solution will be developed on multiple platforms to address functionality required at central and state levels.

Page 20

"When implemented, the application will link the state crime records bureau with the national crime record bureau, thereby creating a database that can be accessed in real-time from any police station across the country," Sankaran noted. The company will leverage its domain expertise and best practices to build the core application software for effective and efficient policing through adoption of e-governance principals. "Given the current national security scenario, our solution is expected to enhance police efficiency in the detection and prevention of crimes," Sankaran added. Government vertical head Ranbir Singh said the network system project was one more step towards enabling the government accelerate efforts in detecting and preventing crimes in the country. "Wipro is already working with several state governments for e-enabling security and surveillance," Singh said.

SWOT ANALYSIS
SWOT Analysis is the Key Component of Strategic Development. It can prompt actions and responses. SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.

Page 31

A SWOT analysis must first start with defining a desired end state or objective. A SWOT analysis may be incorporated into the strategic planning model. Strategic Planning, has been the subject of much research

Strengths: characteristics of the business or team that give it an advantage over others in

the industry.

Weaknesses: are characteristics that place the firm at a disadvantage relative to others. Opportunities: external chances to make greater sales or profits in the environment. Threats: external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business.

Identification of SWOTs are essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs. First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must be selected and the process repeated. The SWOT analysis is often used in academia to highlight and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Market Strategy of WIPRO

Wipro expects to significantly grow its global IT services business and the percentage of its total revenues and profits contributed by this business over the next few years. It hopes to achieve this objective by identifying and developing service offerings in emerging growth areas as separate business opportunities, such as infrastructure support services, business intelligence services and telecommunication, internet and application service providers. It is also planning to aggressively develop the research and development services by focussing on high growth markets such as telecommunication, mobile communication and the internet and high growth technologies such as

Page 68

embedded software. Also, the company will be leveraging its experience in providing IT services in the Indian market and its access to existing clients outside India to provide global support services. The intention is also to increase the number of clients through a dedicated sales team focussed on new client acquisitions and increasing its presence in Europe and Asia. The goal is to make every new client account earn over $1 million in annual revenues within twelve months. Also the company intends to increase its share of business with existing clients by expanding its range of IT solutions and by increasing its knowledge of industry segments and individual client businesses to allow it to better understand client requirements. The focus would be on improving operating margins by increasing the revenue per IT professional by providing higher value added services, increasing the number of productized services and increasing the proportion of the company's fixed price contracts.

WIPRO MARKETS ITSELF

Wipro focuses largely on "pull" marketing initiatives, targeting prospective clients while they are searching for relevant IT information. Mostly this means Web-based marketing with four key components: Search engine promotion Thought leadership content on leading IT portals and directories Web seminars and events Website content

Page 69

Wipro's own Website is the fulcrum of the entire lead-generation program. The marketing team has invested heavily in creating a wide range of material to showcase company capabilities and successes, demonstrate thought leadership, and provide interactive opportunities for prospective clients to sample Wipro's wares. Wipro uses special offers and more than 400 case studies to get visitors to demonstrate and register their specific interests. Comprehensive Web monitoring provides regular analysis of what is and is not working and what role the Web is playing in lead generation and relationship development. Building on the "pull" elements, Wipro uses permission marketing to strengthen relationships and move prospects along the sales cycle. Specific initiatives include telesales, direct mail, and industry-based newsletters. In all cases, the marketing team relies on the prospect database to create carefully targeted lists based on incoming traffic, client profiles, and ongoing Web activity. This helps create the greatest possible impact from the limited "push" activities. Typical marketing campaigns today target as few as 30 to 50 accounts. Many firms talk of a single view of the customer, yet just as many are saddled with disparate databases and uncoordinated marketing and sales activities. The common result is that some prospects are bombarded with conflicting messages through different channels while others simply fall through the cracks. Wipro faced exactly that challenge several years ago and invested in the creation of a single prospect intelligence database that provides a complete view of all marketing and sales interactions with prospect companies as well as extensive profile information. The database now includes detailed data on multiple contacts from almost every company in the Fortune 1,000 and more than

Page 70

17,500 senior management contacts in all. The database is so effective that Wipro no longer buys lists of any kind to support its marketing efforts. Results from Wipro's integrated lead-generation program have greatly exceeded expectations and created an extremely high return on marketing investment. Along with a surge in qualified leads has come a greatly accelerated sales cycle. The typical six- to nine-month sales cycle has been shortened to 30 days in some cases. Leads are converted to sales far more quickly because the targeted approach is more personalized and focused. The particular tactics at the heart of Wipro's program are well known, if not always well developed. No doubt Wipro has done a great job in improving its Website, developing newsletter and Web events, and targeting the right prospects. And it is certainly helped by being in a growing market. Yet the great power and the most important lessons of the program lie in its integrated nature and its disciplined execution.

The move to the higher echelons of the software value chain

Wipro has consciously focused on increasing the revenue contribution from higher-end service lines. The share of services such as IT consulting, systems integration, technology infrastructure services, testing, package implementation and R&D services has been consistently increasing over the past few years. There is significant growth potential in these areas. In order to put it in numbers .

Page 71

In FY2002, revenues from such services totaled 14% of IT service revenues, while in FY2006, this figure was nearly 30%. These services have grown at a CAGR of 64.0% during this period, and total revenues from these services nearly touched US$ 500 mn, from just US$ 67 mn in FY2002. To give just one example, Wipro has been amongst the first movers in services like infrastructure management, which have significant growth potential. Infrastructure management, which is the remote management of a company's IT infrastructure, such as servers, desktops. network management and security systems, used to be an activity that was performed nearly 95% onsite only a few years ago. However, with the increasing acceptance of the off-shoring concept, the activity is now performed 65% offshore, with significant cost savings and value addition for the clients. This service line has grown at a CAGR of over 40% from FY2002, and given Wipro's strong positioning in this service, appears poised for even stronger growth in future.

Wipro's greater technology-intensity give it an edge over its peers

While Wipro's peers derive a significant part of their revenues from the enterprise services business, Wipro has an edge in terms of it being relatively more technology-intensive. The company, as part of its R&D group, provides services in the areas of emerging technologies related to avionics, embedded systems, product engineering, home networking, internet infrastructure, consumer and automotive electronics, to telecom equipment manufacturers like Nortel.

Page 72

The telecom and internet accesses space is a lucrative one due to the fact that R&D spends by the US industry and government have been strong. As a mater of fact, the technology R&D business accounts for around 37% of the company's total revenues. Wipro has also de- risked its revenues away from the equipment manufacturing space by venturing into the telecom service provider segment. This, we believe, gives the company greater resilience to slowdowns such as the one seen in the equipment manufacturer segment at the beginning of this century. With favourable trends in the global telecom sector, such as increased competition, adoption of 3G in numerous countries across the globe, the move to 'next-generation networks' (NGN), and the need to differentiate oneself from competition, leading to greater emphasis on the provision of 'value-added services', such as streaming video, Wipro, being a key player in this space, appears well-poised to benefit.

SALES PROMOT ION

Sales promotion, a key ingredient in marketing campaigns, consists of a diverse collection of incentive tools, mostly short term, designed to stimulate quicker or greater purchase of particular products or services by consumers or the trade. Whereas advertising offers a reason to buy, sales promotion offers an incentive to buy. Sales promotion includes tools for consumer promotion (samples, coupons, cash refund offers, process off, premiums, prizes, patronage rewards, free trials, warranties, tie-in promotions, crosspromotions, point-of-purchase displays, and demonstrations); trade promotion (prices off,

Page 73

advertising and display allowances, and free goods); and sales force promotions (trade shows and conventions, contest for sales reps, and specialty advertising). These tools are used by most organizations, including non-profit organizations. Churches, for example, often sponsor bingo games, theatre parties, testimonial dinners and raffles. A decade ago, the advertising to sales-promotion ratio was about 60:40. Today, in many consumer packaged-good companies, sales promotion accounts for 65 to 75 percent of the combined budged. Sales promotion expenditures have been increasing as a percentage of combined budget expenditure annually for the last two decades. Several factors contribute to this rapid growth, particularly in the consumer markets.2 Promotion is now more accepted by the top management as an effective sales tool; more product managers are qualified to use sales-promotion tools; and product managers are under pressure to increase current sales. In addition, the number of brands has increased; competitors use promotions frequently; many brands are seen as similar; consumers are more price-oriented; the trade has demanded more deals from the manufacturers; and the advertising efficiency has declined because of rising costs, media clutter, and legal restraints. The rapid growth of sales-promotion media has created clutter similar to the advertising clutter. Manufacturers have to find ways to rise above the clutter-for instance, by offering larger coupon-redemption values or using more dramatic point-of purchase displays and demonstrations.

PURPOSES OF SALES PROMOTION

Sales-promotion tools vary in their specific objectives. A free sample stimulates consumer trial, whereas a free management-advisory service aims at cementing long-term relationship with a retailer.

Page 74

Sellers use incentive-type promotion to attract new triers, to reward loyal customers, and to increase the repurchase rates of the occasional users. Sales promotion often attracts brand switchers, who are primarily looking for low price, good value, or premiums. Sales promotions are unlikely to turn them into loyal users. Sales promotions used in markets of high brand similarity produce a high sales response in the short term but little permanent gain in the market share. Today many marketing managers first estimate what they need to spend in trade promotion, then what they need to spend in consumer promotion. Whatever is left they will budget for advertising.. The question of whether or not sales promotion weakens brand loyalty is subject to different interpretations. Sales promotion, with its incessant prices off, coupons, deals and premiums, may devalue the product offering in the buyers minds. Buyers learn that the list promotions. However, usually, when a brand is price promoted too often, the consumer begins to devalue it and buy it mainly when it goes on sale. So there is risk in putting a well-known brand leader on promotion over 30 percent of time. Dominant brands offer deals frequently, because most deals only subsidize current users. Browns study of 2,500 instant-coffee buyers concluded that: Sales promotions yield faster and more measurable responses in sales than advertising does. Sales promotions do not tend to yield new, long term buyers in mature markets because they attract mainly deal-prone consumers who switch among brands as deals become available.

Recommendation And Suggestion

RECOMMENDATION
From the survey many vital points were bought out in the forefront which if implemented can help companies to improve their brand image. Many companies have used promotional offers over the last decade and the proportion of promotional offer budget as a percentage of the total combined budget has been ever rising. This can be attributed to the short-term performance pressure on the product managers. But this tool should be used with caution as Promotional Offers do little to build the brand image of the

Page 95

product or the company in the long term. Thus, more long-term approach to marketing is Advertising and not Promotional Offers. Again as can be ascertained from the survey, most sought after promotional offers are those in which the customer gets instant incentives like Price discounts or Freebies. This can have its positives and negatives. This gives the manufacturer the ability to experiment with different price bands to ascertain price flexibility of the customers and also to deal with demand supply fluctuations effectively on the positive side. But on the negative side of it the customer will start discounting the product as inferior in quality, and also this increases the dissonance of the customers who have already bought from the manufacturer. Thus, price discounts can be effective tool for raking in the moolah but it has to be used with a word of caution and not excessively as it has many a flip sides attached to it. Information search stage for a customer buying an IT product is very extensive and serious search takes place before buying.

SUGGESTIONS

Wipro Should Improve their Service Quality

Reduce Cost in Comparison to their Competitors
