Melissa Gagen, International Specialist of English Furniture, said: The sale reflects the continued strength at the upper end of the English furniture market. Interestingly, the top English pieces - including a George I Japanned Bureau-Cabinet and a George III Giltwood Overmantel Mirror with Chinese Export Mirror Paintings reflected Englands continued fascination with Far Eastern design and received an enthusiastic response from bidders across the world. And a set of Chinese export chairs sold to a buyer who viewed them during our Asia Week preview. Casey Rogers, Specialist of 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, added: We are very pleased with the overall results of this week's sale, particularly with those for important 19th Century Decorative Arts. Spirited bidding was seen on a selective group of French 'Japonisme' works of art, including a three-piece clock garniture by Maison Giroux and Ferdinand Duvinage ($158,500), which achieved over five times the high estimate. A highly important art-case piano by Franois Linke led the sale ($482,500), indicating that rarity, provenance, and superior craftsmanship will continue to be in the highest demand.
