ARTIST DMX SEEKS REDEMPTION WITH LATEST ALBUM RELEASE

(NewsUSA) - Sometimes the best stories of triumph run a strange course -- as is the case with DMX. Following the rappers release from the Arizona state jail in July 2011, the multi-platinum rapper and Ruff Ryders legend eagerly sought to nish his newest album, slated for release in 2012. The rst thing the 40-year-old rapper -- born Earl Simmons -- did after his jail stint ended? Called his wife and kids so he could see them as soon as possible. Later that night, DMX was back in the studio. DMX was locked up for almost a year because of probation violations, but apparently he never stopped thinking about the projects waiting for him. DMX is the original real deal, David Michery, CEO of Seven Arts Music stated recently. We just nished shooting his video in Los Angeles, and his latest single is picking up strong radio play. Between his new album, VHI Show and upcoming appearances, DMX is the comeback king. DMXs new album, Undisputed, features artists like raps verbal Road Runner Busta Rhymes, the multi-talented Tyrese and dream-girl Jennifer Hudson. Fans will get a long-awaited glimpse of the CD with the singles Already, Keep Ya Head Up and I Dont Dance, which will debut before the album. Among the collaborators and production team behind Xs seventh studio album is the Los Angeles-based record label Seven Arts Music. Were thrilled to be working with such a legend in the game. His fan base continues to be strong, after all these years and hes still able to produce great music. He remains the only artist in Billboard history to reach number one with ve consecutive albums, says Jake Shapiro, COO of Seven Arts Music. DMX launched his comeback with a performance at the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards. After he announced himself with his signature growl and bark to elicit a standing ovation, DMX and Swizz Beatz rolled right into Ruff Ryders Anthem and Party Up (Up in Here). More recently, X debuted I Dont Dance at Sevilla Night Club in Long Beach, Calif., featuring rap newcomer MGK -Machine Gun Kelly. To learn more about DMXs upcoming album, visit www.bigjakemusic.com.

about PD and educating people about the symptoms, treatments and facts. One of the biggest events during the month is the Parkinsons Unity Walk (PUW) in New Yorks Central Park. On Saturday, April 28, thousands of PD supporters will gather in the worldfamous park to help raise funds for PD research. Walkers will also have the opportunity to visit a variety of supporter booths where they can pick up educational resources about managing and coping with their disease. This year, PUW participants will have the chance to walk the red carpet at the Teva booth. Teva is committed to supporting the stars of the PD community: patients and their care partners. Booth visitors will have the opportunity to give a red carpet interview and have their photo taken by a professional. I cannot underscore how important and rewarding it has been for me to be involved in community action like the PUW, says PD Star Israel Robledo, who has been living with PD for 5 years. Having a strong support system, an invested healthcare team and an effective medication regimen has allowed me to continue doing some of the things I love to do despite my diagnosis. PD inhibits motor skill function and cognitive ability. While there is no cure for PD, there are many options to treat symptoms of the disease. Movement and coordination in the body are controlled by a chemical in the brain called dopamine. In PD, dopamine levels are reduced, affecting a persons ability to control movement. Most medications for PD treat dopamine deciency by either helping to replace dopamine, preventing its breakdown or mimicking its effects. For more information about PD, please visit www.parkinsonshealth.com.

THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN MAKE FOR YOUR GRANDCHILDREN

(NewsUSA) - Grandparents and grandchildren have much to learn from one another, and such valuable relationships should be cultivated. Oxford University research has shown that involved grandparents contribute signicantly to better-adjusted grandchildren. The research suggests that children nd unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benets them emotionally and mentally. The grandparental bond is built on communication. In fact, most children studied did not identify distance as an important factor if communication was strong. Unfortunately, hearing loss is the number-one challenge to communication. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), age and hearing loss are strongly related -- 30 percent of seniors from 65 to 74 years old suffer from a hearing disability. For adults 75 years of age or older, hearing loss jumps to 47 percent. It doesnt take a PhD for my patients to understand the many costs of hearing loss, says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a certied ear, nose and throat physician based in Chicago, Ill. Beyond emotional well-being, even something simple like taking the grandkids to the pool can turn dangerous if grandma cant hear possible cries for help. Driving puts the children at risk if the grandparents cannot hear oncoming trafc or car horns. The NIDCD reports that only one out of every ve people who needs a hearing aid actually wears one. This is largely due to the extravagant cost of most hearing aids. I found that I saw too many patients with hearing loss going home without a solution because they couldnt afford hearing aid prices, says Dr. Cherukuri. Cherukuris response was to develop inexpensive but effective hearing aids. With todays technology, a quality hearing aid shouldnt cost more than a digital camera or iPod, Cherukuri says. MDHearingAid, found at www. mdhearingaid.com, isnt just a reliable source for affordable hearing aids, its also a good source for expert consumer information. You should see a physician and get the best hearing aid you can afford. We offer an excellent choice for those who cannot afford a custom hearing aid. Seniors should enjoy the benets of their ripe age. This includes plenty of quality time with grandchildren.

NAVIGATING THE LEARNING CURVE OF COLLEGE VISITS

(NewsUSA) - Finding the perfect college is kind of like investigative journalism -- you must do loads of research, ask all the right questions and visit the scene to gather rst-hand knowledge and experience.

College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that. The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls. As any tooth-and-nails journalist will tell you about a hot story, parents should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Prepare to be schooled by Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning. * Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasnt done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life -- sports, extracurriculars, campus/enrollment size, dorm life, religious afliations, academic strengths and offerings -- are important to them and use those criteria. Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your childs academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit. * Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from the local Sylvan Learning (www.sylvanlearning. com) tutoring experts. The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing doubledigit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once, says Bavaria. * Go while college is in session. Weekends and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which wont give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience. * Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question everyone -- students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like nancial aid and safety. You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

GETTING YOUR WIGGLE BACK

(NewsUSA) - Hes the original Blue Wiggle, which probably makes him about the last man on earth youd think ever suffered from clinical depression. But thats exactly what Anthony Field, founder and co-star of the popular childrens musical group The Wiggles, says was at the root of a slew of health problems that lasted years, and -parents, brace yourselves -- threatened to end his wiggling for good. I was troubled by chronic back and neck pain, as well as a string of digestive and food sensitivity issues that extenuated my general ill health, fueled by clinical depression, to the point that I could no longer continue, he says. Its what turned things around, though, thats perhaps even more surprising. Chiropractic care saved my career, Field proclaims. In fact, his new book, How I Got My Wiggle Back, describes how a certain chiropractor helped him morph from an overweight, pain-racked mess into the muscled Adonis he is today. His turnaround has been inspirational, says Kent S. Greenawalt, chairman of the

Its why we get a rush when we see Jason take his axe to some unsuspecting teen in Friday the 13th or why we cant seem to look away when Carrie, dripping with pigs blood, incinerates her entire high-school class. While mesmerizing, to be sure, the real question is: why do we pay for the pleasure of being scared? On this, there are various schools of thought. Some believe that fans of horror (be it movies or books) dont actually experience fear, but are excited instead, while others believe that people are willing to endure the terror because they know there is no real threat, that they are essentially safe. Still others feel that moviegoers are willing to be scared in order to feel a sense of euphoric relief at the end. Whatever the reason, movie studios like Seven Arts Pictures, a Los Angeles-based indie movie production company, are counting on customers who are willing to pay to be petried, by releasing a horror ick like Night of the Demons. In the movie, three friends attend a party held in a mansion where, years prior, six people disappeared and the owner hung herself.

We think that people have a morbid fascination with the dark side, said Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts. So even though a horror movie might be illogical on an intellectual level, people still like to be uncomfortable on an emotional level. Its about people facing their fears, he added. Which makes sense and explains why many of us have (reluctantly) stuck our hand down the garbage disposal, just waiting for our ngers to brush up against something (or, perhaps, for the machine to turn on by itself, shredding the hand inside ? la Stephen King), or why we might refuse to put our leg out of the covers at night. This, too, is why we keep creepy haunted houses busy at Halloween, why we tell ghost stories around the campre and why we turn out for horror movies like they were giving away free popcorn. Its because we like it. For more information, visit www.7artspictures.com.
A GUYS GUIDE TO SELECTING WEDDING BANDS

Meaning, its time to start thinking about what kind of wedding band you want for yourself. Wedding bands have become the norm for men in recent years -- 97 percent of grooms in The Knot Market Intelligences 2011 Engagement & Jewelry Study opted for one -- so even if you have any doubts, your bride will probably set you straight. That means your only real decision is what kind of band best suits you. To hear CNNMoney.com tell it, there are basically two camps: those who dont want to compromise when it comes to quality (platinum bands), and those who feel they cannot afford the best and therefore need to settle (bands made from alternative metals). But, as jewelry expert Michael OConnor points out, that doesnt really give the whole picture. Its true that platinum is so rare -- 30 times more so than gold -- that if all the worlds supply were melted and poured into an Olympic-size pool, it would barely reach your ankles, OConnor says. But mens platinum bands start at $500. That turns out to be pretty comparable to the cost of the two most popular alternative metals: titanium and tungsten carbide. Both are perhaps best known for being used to make ghter jets. Cool, right? Well, yes, but that also means theyre intrinsically lightweight and lack

the heft of platinum. Most men prefer something that feels masculine on their nger, says OConnor. There are other facts to consider, too. Tungsten and titanium jewelry will need special reconditioning if scratched, and cannot be resized. Even the more popular white gold will require rhodium replating to restore its white color due to wear over time. And while platinum -- as all precious metals -- can scratch, the metal is simply displaced on the surface of the ring, meaning very little metal is lost in wear. That makes it the most durable family heirloom that will last generations. Still confused? Then ask yourself this question: How committed are you to your future wife? If the answers what we think, then know that platinum has traditionally symbolized a relationship that will endure since it doesnt fade or change color. Thats the kicker for a lot of couples, says OConnor. For more information, visit www. preciousplatinum.com/weddingbands.

(NewsUSA) - Congratulations to all you soon-to-be grooms. Now that your wedding is only months away, your jewelry collection -- just a watch, huh? -- is about to increase by as much as 50 percent.

Eye Dissection
Brookside Elementary (231) 796-8323

New Directions (231) 796-3489

Ferris State Optometry students came to Brookside and Riverview to demonstrate and dissect a cow's eye to 2nd graders. The students learned different parts of the eye and were amazed at what they learned. Picture left is Brookside, picture right is Riverview.

Up-cycling at Brookside
At the entrance of Brookside is a beautiful tree blooming with many very colorfully painted water bottles. The idea for the tree originally came from Artprize in Grand Rapids. An artist, Dale Wayne, had made ten trees that were beautiful. She had one she was letting the public decorate. Parent volunteer, Nikki Jorgensen, remembers thinking what a great idea this was and how much fun the kids were having with it. Nikki has been doing some art projects in a few of the classes at Brookside this year. She was asked for some art ideas to celebrate Earth Day. Nikki remembered the tree full of water bottles and wanted to do the project with all of the students at Brookside. The kids have really had a lot of fun painting, cutting, and picking a spot on the tree to put their water bottle. It's been fun watching the tree "bloom". THANK YOU MRS. JORGENSEN!, from Brookside students and staff.
