RYNO
MCC appoints Shoen to board
SIDNEY The Montcalm Commu-
nity College Board of Trustees appointed
Stephen Shoen, of Stanton, to its board
during its regular meeting on Tuesday.
Shoen replaces Richard Ellafrits, of
Greenville, who resigned on March 13.
His appointment is effective immedi-
ately.
Board of Trustees President Karen
Carbonelli said she appreciates Ellaf-
rits service to the board and welcomes
Shoen as the boards newest member.
Steve has worked in many areas
of our district and he understands the
community, Carbonelli said. His f-
nancial background and his leadership
skills will be valuable to the Board of
Trustees.
Shoen is a lifelong resident of Mont-
calm County, and he is a Central Mont-
calm High School graduate. He earned
a bachelors degree in Business Admin-
istration from Ferris State College in
1971 and is a graduate of the University
of Michigan Graduate School of Bank-
ing and the University of Wisconsin
Graduate School of Banking. He began
his 40-year banking career at Montcalm
Central Bank (now Chemical Bank) in
1971 and served in the roles of offcer
trainee, assistant manager and branch
manager. He joined Sidney State Bank
in 1983 as assistant vice president and
loan offcer. He was promoted to vice
president in 1987, and in 1992 he suc-
ceeded Rex Rice as president/CEO and
chairman of the banks board of direc-
tors. Shoen retired from Sidney State
Bank in December 2010 after 27 years
of service. He still serves on the banks
board of directors.
Ellafrits joined the MCC Board of
Trustees in December 1999 and served
as the treasurer.
Dick served us very well as treasur-
er of the board, Carbonelli said. His f-
nancial background and expertise made
him a very valuable board member. He
was particularly effective in long-range
planning and projections. We really ap-
preciate his service to Montcalm Com-
munity College.
Montcalm County

Richard Ellafrits
Ryan Ringler, 11, son of Paul and
Jane Ringler of Cedar Springs, has
learned from a early age what it takes
to be a champion. When many kids are
enjoying video games and watching t.v.
after school, Ryan and his brother Jor-
dan are on a wrestling mat. The Ringler
boys began wrestling as early as their
preschool days. Over these years, the
boys have become accustomed to start-
ing the season in November and practic-
ing most days of the week for half of the
year. This commitment and determina-
tion leads them to the annual, spring,
state fnals and also the national tourna-
ment for youth wrestling. The two larg-
est and most meaningful competitions
for every wrestler.
All the time, effort and hard work
paid off just two weeks ago, as Ryan
accomplished his goal by taking state
champion for the third time for Michi-
gan. He pinned every opponent. And
this past week, he attended the national
competition and was awarded the Na-
tional Champion title for the 100 pound
weight class. This was Ryans frst indi-
vidual national title. Only the top four
place wrestlers in each state could par-
ticipate in this prestigious competition.
Ryan is no stranger to a national
championship, as this past winter, he
tried out and was accepted onto the
elite, (MyWay) Michigan, travel team.
They battled against several elite, out of
state teams. At the end of these duals,
Michgian conquered and took home the
champion title. Ryan had contributed to
this national victory, as he pulled out a
win every time he took the mat.
When asked about the state and na-
tional tournaments, Ryan never ques-
tioned if he could do it, he believed in
himself and this was his year. He pre-
pared and worked out, even on those
days he didnt feel like exerting himself.
Given the tough, frustrating, contact
sport, that wrestling is, and the practice
time that it takes to be successful, Ryan
showed commitment, respect for his
fellow wrestlers, as well as, the offcials.
And he continually presented a good at-
titude and sportsmanship. For that is
what his family is truly proud of.
Side Note: Ryans older brother Jor-
dan also made the the national team.
Both boys will continue to travel with
these teams this summer. Jordan placed
3rd at the state fnals and should be giv-
en much credit for Ryans success, due
to the motivation and help given to his
younger brother all year.

Sand Lake Lions recycle for
sight
As spring cleaning gets under way, the Sand Lake
Lions are asking people to look through dresser draw-
ers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them
to the Lions Recycle For Sight program. During the
months of April and May, the Sand Lake Lions Club
will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and
prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of
a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will
be cleaned and prepared for distribution in develop-
ing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and
inaccessible. We need everyone to donate their used
eyeglasses, reading glasses and sunglasses, said Rick
Long, Project Chairman. In most developing countries,
an eye exam can cost as much as one months wages
and a single eye doctor may serve a community of
hundreds of thousands of people. The donated glasses
will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling
Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by
prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions
and other groups. To donate used glasses (including
sunglasses and reading glasses) place them in the spe-
cially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes
located in Sand Lake at Independent Bank, WESCO,
The Sand Lake Library and Sand Lake Foods. The Sand
Lake Lions Club is looking for new members and meets
on the 2nd Wed., 7pm and the 4th Sat., 9:30am at the
Sand Lake Library. Lions Clubs are groups of men and
women who identify needs within the community and
work together to fulfll those needs. For more informa-
tion or to get involved with the Sand Lake Lions Club,
please contact Rick Long at 616-813-7533. Lions Club
International is the worlds largest service club organiza-
tion with more than 1.3 million members in approxi-
mately 45,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and
geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions
Clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and
made a strong commitment to community service and
serving youth throughout the world. For more informa-
tion about Lions Clubs International, visit the Web site

Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically,
by defnition, be disqualifed from ever doing so.
GORE VIDAL
Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville
rated as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the Nation
GREENVILLE An an-
nual study released this week
by Thomson Reuters recognized
Spectrum Health United Hospi-
tal as being among the 100 best
hospitals in the country based on
measures of overall organization
performance, including patient
care, operational effciency, and
fnancial stability.
Spectrum Health United
Hospital in Greenville was
named one of Thomson Reuters
100 Top Hospitals.
United Hospital is the only
small community hospital (un-
der 100 beds) to receive this elite
honor and recognition within the
region. In total, 918 small com-
munity hospitals were included
with the nationwide survey. Of
those surveyed, only 20 were se-
lected as award recipients in this
category, of which one is Spec-
trum Health United Hospital.
Additionally, this award places
United Hospital in the top 2% of
approximately 5,500 hospitals
in the nation.
This distinction is awarded
because of the Thomson Reuters
annual study that examines
changing performance levels in
U.S. hospitals and objectively
identifes hospitals based on
their overall performance.
It is extremely gratifying to
be recognized for our ongoing
commitment to excellent qual-
ity, safety and patient satisfac-
tion. To be named one of the
top 100 hospitals in the nation
reaffrms our mission and vi-
sion to improve the health of the
community and be a leader for
health, said Tina Freese-Deck-
er, President, Spectrum Health
United Hospital.
This award is the result of
the dedication and teamwork of
our medical staff and employees.
Their commitment to excellence
and compassion shines for every
patient, every day.
The Thomson Reuters study
evaluates performance in 10 ar-
eas: mortality, medical compli-
cations, patient safety, average
length of stay, expenses, proft-
ability, patient satisfaction, ad-
herence to clinical standards of
care, and post-discharge mor-
tality and readmission rates for
acute myocardial infarction,
heart failure and pneumonia.
The study has been conducted
annually since 1993.
To conduct the 100 Top Hos-
pitals study, Thomson Reuters
researchers evaluated 2,914
short-term, acute care, non-fed-
eral hospitals. They used public
information - Medicare cost re-
ports, Medicare Provider Analy-
sis and Review (MedPAR) data,
and core measures and patient
satisfaction data from the Cen-
ters for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) Hospital Com-
pare website. Hospitals do not
apply, and winners do not pay to
market this honor.
If all Medicare inpatients re-
ceived the same level of care as
those treated in the award-win-
ning facilities:
n More than 186,000 addi-
tional lives could be saved.
nApproximately 56,000 ad-
ditional patients could be com-
plication free.
n More than $4.3 billion
could be saved.
n The average patient stay
would decrease by nearly half a
day.

Hyaluronan. Could this be a Wonder Drug?
Hyaluronan is one of natures most essential molecules for maintaining life. It
is found naturally in all the tissues and uids of the body and is the same in all
mammals. It is an extremely hydrophilic molecule, absorbing and managing up
to 1000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronan lls the voids between tissue cells
where it helps them divide, grow, communicate and heal. It plays many vital roles
in the body from conception and fetal development to skin and tissue hydration,
immune system support, cartilage formation, and joint lubrication. Pharmacologic
roles include the relief of pain and inammation.
Some people are familiar with Hyaluronic Acid shots that are given in the joints
for severe degenerative arthritis. We have found a stable oral version of that which
sees to provide outstanding relief of chronic joint pain.
It is called Baxyl or MHB3. It is microbially fermented, avoiding the risks associated
with hyaluronan from animal and avian sources. MHB3 is the only oral hyaluronan
with blinded, placebo controlled studies demonstrating safety and
efcacy Additionally, with MHB3 there have been no serious side
effects, drug interactions, or contraindications.
It is a little pricey at $40 per month, but it is ying off the shelf so
it must be working. Incidentally it is extremely good for treatment
of dry eyes.

I just wanted to let you know about a
good experience I had with one of your
agents, Michelle Newell.
I recently purchased a piece of
property and Michelle handled the
transaction. I have had the opportunity
to deal with realtors on numerous
occasions, and she is one of the most
dedicated and professional I have had
the privilege to work with. Everything
was handled in a timely manner, her
follow through was excellent, not to
mention her enthusiasm.
Just thought you would like to know.

Experienced, Positive, Motivated Associate Broker!
These homes I have SOLD are NOT in Foreclosure!
Need help selling your home for a better price? I would love
to work for YOU. The more non-foreclosed homes I can sell,
they now become a statistic toward raising the values of pre-
existing home, and should help turn the Real Estate market
around sooner, rather than later.
Dear Michelle,
I am writing to thank you again for
helping me with the purchase of my
home. You have been there for me
through several home sales and
purchases, and you have always
taken care of every detail with
professionalism and speed, through
each transaction. I had complete
condence in your ability, and knew
every aspect would be handled with
perfection. You are an amazing
Realtor and I feel blessed that Ive
had the opportunity to work with
you.
Thank you so much for everything!

FBI. The FBI has published urgent
recommendations for all of us who see
those pesky emails phishing for us to click
on their messages. For example, Adobe
Systems writes and publishes the Adobe
Reader and other software most of us use
to read documents, articles and lots of other
information we nd on the web. Adobes
software gets automatically updated on our
computers. We see a message pop-up asking
permission to update, we click OK. Its done.
Adobe.com is the online address for Adobe.
Phishing phor access. Recently an email
has been circulated to many of our inboxes
from a site called Adobesystems.com.
AdobeSystems.com is not Adobe.com, but
is an infesting site. It asks you to click on a
link to allow an Adobe update to download
onto your computer. It leads you to believe
that without it, your version of Adobe will be
obsolete.
Stop jerking. DO NOT CLICK ON IT! This
is a classic, common example of appealing to
your knee-jerkiness that quality that makes
us act rashly without careful foresight. We see
something that looks so very safe. After all,
AdobeSystems.com looks safe, right? But
clicking without thinking lets the worms in!
Follow FBI recommendations. Do not
respond to unsolicited (spam) email. Check
the domain of the sender (many times it is a
slight variation of a recognized name brand).
Phishing attempts may typically contain
spelling errors or broken English.
Attachments. Only open attachments from
known senders. Do not click links contained
within an unsolicited email. Be wary of email
claiming to contain pictures in attached les
as the les may contain viruses. Scan the
attachments for viruses if possible.
Do not ll out forms. Avoid lling out forms
contained in email messages that ask for
personal information. Never give out your
name, address, phone number, SS# unless you
went looking for that website purposefully,
and are sure youre in the right place.
Use your engine. Always compare links in
emails with the link to which you are directed
to determine if they match and will lead you
to a legitimate site. Then log directly onto
the ofcial website instead of linking to it
from an unsolicited email. Contact the sender
alternatively by telephone or IM or through
your search engine if you are unsure an email
you receive is genuine.
If you are asked to act quickly, or told there
is an emergency, think SCAM! Fraudsters
often create a sense of urgency to get you to
act quickly. Its not true.
Verify requests for personal information
from any business or nancial institution by
contacting the business using the main contact
information listed at the website you nd for
them through a search engine.
Too good to be true, is. Check out FBI: http://
