Experts Blame B a d S o i l Management on Steep Hillsides for C a u s i n g Landslides that are Reducing the Size and Depth of Bali's Mountain Lakes
The increasing shallowness of Bali's Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, located in the island's mountain-lake district, is blamed on the destruction of surrounding jungle and plantation agriculture that are being converted to commercial uses and the planting of seasonal crops. Bali Post reports that hillsides once covered with coffee and other trees are being turned to flowers, vegetables and strawberry crops. The change in land use has resulted in soil conditions prone to landslides that

eventually deposit loose soils into the nearby lakes. Data collected by the Forestry and Plantation Service (Dishutbun) of the Buleleng regency and presented to the press, said that hillside lands are being changed to seasonal uses such as vegetable and strawberry crops over the past few years in combination with the building of hillside villas. Highly Priced and Hard to Find

Pertamina's general manager for retail fuel marketing for Bali, Nusa Tenggara and East Java Affandi, told Bisnis Bali on Tuesday, that his company will soon increase the number of outlets selling Pertamax to make it easier for the public to access the higher cost premium gas. He explained: There are not many gas stations selling Pertamax because the demand from the public for non-subsidized gas remains small. On the average the demand for Pertamax is about 1 percent of all demand for fuel in East Java and Bali. He said the daily use of Pertamax in Bali has reached 20 kiloliters per day. This compares to the 2,300 kiloliters of subsidized premium gas hillside property be excavated for rocks to be used in the construction of local villas. Forestry official, Tatang Priatna, said on Tuesday, said that land at an inclination of more than 50 degrees should not be cultivated. Cultivation makes such landscapes unstable and leads to landslides. The shifting soils, in turn, add to sedimentation of local lakes, reducing the natural depth. Tatang said the ber

When it comes to war, beer beats silver and gold

The Dutch drank their way to victory and independence from Spain in 1648 through the taxes they paid on beer, according to a report in an issue of the Journal of American Association of Wine Economists.
Economists Koen Deconinck of the University of Leuven and Johann Swinnen of Stanford University wrote that taxes on beer "played a crucial role in financing the revolt ... (and) were the single largest revenue source" for the outnumbered and outgunned Dutch, who were facing "the mightiest empire on earth." Since beer was safer to drink than water, cheaper to buy than wine, and not as easily spoiled as milk, it was the drink of choice for many Dutchmen. In his book, "Beer in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance," Robert Unger estimated that by the year 1600 per capita consumption of beer in Holland ranged from 400 litres to 600 litres (106 gallons-159 gallons). As the Dutch revolt dragged on for 80 years, taxes on beer were increased until they became Holland's largest source of income. The levies were collected through a method "resembling the VAT system in use in many European countries ... (and it) allowed them to outlast the Spanish," At their peak, they estimated, war costs represented 11 percent of Dutch gross domestic product. Research Service estimated that at its peak, the Iraq war represented 1 percent of U.S. GDP. Spain, financing its war with Holland largely with taxes on gold and silver mined at colonies in the New World, spent roughly 6 percent of its GDP. Unable to pay its troops for months at a time and facing almost annual mutinies, Spain signed the Treaty of Munster in 1648, officially recognizing the Dutch Republic and ceding the land north of Flanders to the rebels. The Dutch were also allowed to keep their overseas possessions and their monopoly over the East Indies trade, which they acquired during the revolt. The treaty set the boundaries that still divide Belgium from the Netherlands.

Centurions clash with police at Colosseum

Tourists in Rome would have been forgiven if they had thought for a moment that they had stepped back in time.
R o m a n centurions, complete with red skirts, tunics, armour, swords and feathered helmets, fought in front of the Colosseum. But this time it was with a m o d e r n e n e m y, Rome's city police. The police arrived at the ancient amphitheatre to enforce an eviction notice for the men, who ask for money to have their picture taken by tourists. Italy's culture ministry says the men have no permits, often harass and stalk tourists, ask for exorbitant amounts and disfigure the historic image of the centurion by wearing jeans under their skirts and running shoes instead of the classic Roman "caliga" leather sandals. The clashes broke out when city police in modern uniforms arrived to remove two centurions who had occupied part of an arcade on the first floor of the Colosseum. Some 25 centurions tried to stop the police from taking the two away. In the scuffle one of the bread," he said. "In Venice they have the gondoliers and in Rome we have the centurions. That's it." And, as in ancient Roman clashes in the same amphitheatre, the crowd of onlookers took sides and gave an unequivocal thumbs down to those wearing the modern uniforms. "Leave them alone. We are all centurions," the crowd chanted in Italian. But Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, a member of Italy's largest right-wing party, was having none of it. He said the men had to abide by rules that would be imposed by the city, including permits and rules of conduct. "We will not let ourselves be blackmailed. Either the centurions accept the rules or they will have to go," he said in a statement. Caesar could not have been more resolute.

home the big prize. Moving on, I wanna take my hat off to the powers that be in Kuta for pulling up the late night, or should I say, early morning partying in and around Kuta. The paper has reported on the situation in the past and I'm sure we have all listened to the debates around different bars in relation to the same, but, this time they really have enforced the be closed by, I think its, 3am rule and are making the place that much better by doing so. I've taken the time over the last few weeks to head into town around the new closing time, surprisingly sober, to observe how the authorities are handling it and am incredibly happy to report that they are doing it exceptionally well. They have not only cleaned up the main road by way of a complete new paving job along with new footpath, but they have also organised the taxis to stay on one side of the road instead of turning the road into a 5 lane parking lot which once would have taken more than an hour to get down if you were in a car. You now have an open and free run down the opposite side to the taxis. You can slip down the main street at 40 kilometers an hour with no trawling, honking cabs blocking your way. It is fantastic. It seems they are making sure the patrons of all the clubs, when closed, are whisked away in a flash by waiting taxis and are not letting anything stop the free flow of the main drag. They have extra security in place and are truly serious about the betterment of Bali. I did have a yarn this week with an owner of arguably the biggest club in the precinct and I asked if they were unhappy as they had to close early, which in my head would be costing them dearly. I guess I expected the answer to be very straight forward and they would complain and whinge about the situation but much to my surprise it was the complete reverse to what I was thinking. They took great pleasure in explaining that the directive had actually raised the standard for the club, in so far as people were not drinking themselves into oblivion and were behaving much better as the night was slightly limited. Sure people are still partying, but there was much less agro with young drunken idiots and even the ladies had been turning up dressed that much better causing the young lads to follow code in the hope of catching one. They went onto explain that they are taking steps to instigate the non smoking rule and believe that this alone will actually increase their turnover by way of bringing people into a much more comfortable venue that they would not normally go, due to the filthy stinking cigarette smell. It was a very interesting afternoons listening to how things are changing, and frankly, I think for the better. So it seems my loyal readers that the days of the drunken slobbing tourist wandering down the street, pissed to the eye balls, carrying a bottle of the local brew, are soon to be a thing of the past if the powers that be get their way in the immediate. I think this is a great wind change for Bali and hope most tourists appreciate that it is time for the island to catch up with the rest of the world and offer that little bit more for travellers from all over the world. Rock on Bali. Ok people, with that behind me I'm going to sign off for another week and just might go kick back and destroy a few greenys, of course quietly, but, in good company. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, h e a l t h y a n d a l w a y s r e m e m b e r, I f y o u c a n s t a r t t h e d a y w i t h o u t c a f f e i n e , If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without alcohol, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, Then You Are Probably The Family Dog. Ohio man charged after six puppies found in suitcase

An Ohio man has been charged with animal abandonment after a litter of six English bulldog puppies was found in a suitcase with a tag bearing his name, according to Humane Society authorities.
Cyndi Condit, spokeswoman for the Toledo Area Humane Society said that the man, identified as Howard Davis of Toledo, lived only two blocks from where the suitcase was found. The mother of the puppies was found pacing around the suitcase, which attracted the attention of a passerby. "Howard's name was on the tag of the suitcase and the mother was licensed to him," Condit said. After the dogs were found in a Toledo alley, Davis was charged with a second degree misdemeanour, which carries with it a maximum $750 fine and 90 days in jail, according to John Dinon, the Toledo Area Humane Society's executive as to how the adopted dogs got back from Michigan in the stolen suitcase. The puppies, three male and three female, are estimated to be four weeks old, too young to be separated from their mother, so they will spend at least another four weeks in foster care before they are eligible for adoption. Dinon said the shelter has received an overwhelming number of calls about adopting the puppies but that for now they are "evidence" in the case against Davis. He also added that Davis could have easily brought the dogs to the Humane Society and if he had, he would not be facing charges. "Anyone who can't take care of any animal can come here and we will work with you," Dinon said.

The Minister said current strategy is to offer special packages to Asian tourists that will encourage two or three visits to Indonesia in a single year.

Cannibal gang 'made meat pastries out of victims' flesh'

Horrific details are emerging from a purported Brazilian cannibal gang that allegedly murdered at least five women and ate their flesh.
News reports claim the cult group may have sold the human flesh in the form of meat pastries. Details of the incident became public after a video was released on a website at the weekend. The video showed Isabel Cristina da Silva, 51, saying she, her husband and his 25-year-old girlfriend had eaten 10 kilograms of human flesh over the course of five days in the city of Garanhuns. The trio was arrested on suspicion of having murdered and cannibalised at least two women in what was described as a purification ritual. The trio also apparently took some of the meat and cooked it into meat pastries which they sold on the street. The defendants claimed to be part of a sect called Cartel that sought to purify the world and reduce the population, a police spokesman said. They intended to kill three women per year, "The details of the actions of the trio, with drawings and explanations of cannibalism, were found in a 50-page book written by Da Silveira, a man with a diploma in education and a black belt in

This assessment was tabled during a seminar on Revitalizing the Subak to Become an Economic Agribusiness Enterprise that Can Raise the Living Standard of Farmers. The seminar, conducted by the agricultural faculty of Bali's

Udayana University was held on last week. The Dean of the agriculture facility, Professor Dr. Ir. Nyoman Rai, raised an alarm that a latest threat to the very existence of the subak system currently exists in Bali. Professor Rai said the outside threat to the subak comes from those who seek to change the functional use of land in Bali. The process of changing agricultural land to housing must be halted. This is needed to save the subak, warned the Professor.

Bali on its Way to 3 Million Visitors for 2012?

Bali by the Numbers: Bali Makes Strong Start to 2012 with Arrivals Up for January-February by 15.79%
Foreign tourist arrivals for February 2012 totaled 219,475 increasing 9% over February 2011. On a cumulative basis for both January and February, foreign tourist arrivals reached 467,764 up 15,79% from 2012. Bali has set an ambitious target of 3 million tourists arrivals, approximating a 10% improvement over the 2.75 million tourists who came to the island in 2011. ASEAN and the AsiaPacific region produce 73.2% of all Bali's tourist visitors with Australia the biggest market share at 26.04%. Australia now represents far and away the largest source of foreign tourist visitors to Bali. 57,381 Australians came to Bali in February, increasing 27.9% over the total for the same month in 2011. Cumulatively, Australian visitors for January-February are up 17.10% The People's Republic of China is now the second largest source of Bali visitors. While visitors for JanuaryFebruary from the PRC are up a staggering 85.13% it's not clear that this burst can be sustained over the rest of the year. The arrival totals for the PRC are bloated by a 224% increase in arrivals from that market in January when Chinese New Year fell. A more sobering and realistic view of arrivals from the PRC in 2012 is provided by February totals when only 27,607 PRC nationals came to Bali, a decline of 9 visitors when compared to the same month in 2011. www.balidiscovery.com

Pangestu, speaking at the governor's office, said she supported plans for another airport in Bali to support the current Ngurah Rai International Airport. Pangestu said: We need to review this (the new airport). What's important is how to meet the demand for flights to Bali and how to make Bali's north prosper, not only Bali's south. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Admits the Need for Another Airport in Bali
As reported by Balidiscovery.com, future plans for an airport in Bali's north remain very much in doubt as concrete details on the muchdiscussed airport remain hard to come by. Kompas.com reports that the provincial government of Bali is seeking clarification on the proposed Buleleng airport from the Central Government. The need for another airport in Bali is made all the more urgent, according to some observers, due to the impossibility of expanding runway capacity at

Tumpek Kandang held to honor livestock
Sixteen cows were primped with colorful and glittering crowns and neck straps before being judged in a contest held as part of the Tumpek Kandang celebration on Saturday, April,21th.
During the Tumpek Kandang, which falls once every 210 days, the Balinese organize special rituals to honor domesticated animals. Balinese Hinduism also has special rituals to honor trees, gamelan musical ensembles, shadow puppets and weapons. Brought by nine stockbreeding groups from Denpasar, the cows were herded from their cages to the paddy fields where judges from the city husbandry agency assessed them. In the Balinese cow contest held in the Kertalangu cultural village, some five kilometers east of downtown Denpasar, the judges assessed the animals based on physical criteria, including skin color, size and the shape of their head and horns. "Male cows, for instance, should have black skin, a black-tipped tail, a black horn and a compact neck and chest. Their bodies should be in good proportion," said the agency head I Dewa Made Ngurah. Four of the 16 cows were aged below one year, four were male, four were female, while the remaining four were older cows. The competition was held based on those categories. The contest is aimed at providing stockbreeders with better knowledge about the quality of different breeds in order to improve the cow population in Denpasar. "Stock breeders should be able to improve their self-reliance and cope with the latest technology so they can get more benefits and have better livelihoods," said Ngurah. He said the celebration was also aimed at strengthening local knowledge about taking care of livestock as part of their livelihood. The celebration of Tumpek Kandeng is dedicated to Sang Hyang Rare Angon, the god of cattle and livestock. On this day, Balinese show their appreciation for all domesticated animals that help them in their everyday life by presenting special offerings and prayers to the God. Holy water and rice are sprinkled on the head of these animals at the end of the ceremony. Tumpek Kandang, also known as Tumpek Andang, falls exactly on the day of Saniscara Kliwon Wuku Uye according to the Balinese calendar, which combines calculations of lunar and solar calendars with the indigenous, local calendar Pawukon and Wewaran. Lunar and solar calendars are based on the movement of celestial bodies whereas Pawukon and Wewaran are based on a fixed, cyclical pattern. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, "Tumpek" that means Saturday and "Kandang", the Balinese word for cage, symbolizing domesticated animals honored by Balinese Hindus, especially cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs and birds. During this celebration, the animals are given great attention; the cows are washed in the river and are dressed up with a special cone-shaped spiral made out of coconut leaf that is placed on their horns. The pigs have their bellies wrapped with a white or yellow cloth. They are also fed with the best food. The Balinese inherited the Tumpek Kandang to preserve nature, balance the ecosystem and maintain harmonious relations between humans, the environment and God, in line with the Hindu belief of Tri Hita Karana. Through this celebration, they expect the livestock will bring them more prosperity.

Denpasar Officials Checking the Paperwork of Foreign and Local Residents
The administration of Denpasar Bali's capital city, is taking steps to prevent terrorism and other criminal acts by conducting sweeping raids and inspections, checking the identity of the city's residents. Foreign residents of Denpasar are not immune when officials come knocking on the door of local businesses and residences. This was proven when a number of expatriates were netted in recent raids of rented accommodation in the Sanur Kauh sub-district of Denpasar. Those raids were conducted by teams that included officials from the municipality, immigration, police, the armed forces and officials from the South Denpasar sub-district. The head of the enforcement team, I Ketut Dunia, told Radar Bali that the goal of the sweeps was to improve security in Denpasar. When they encountered foreigners, the members of the team inspected the stay permits, visa, and police books and checked to ensure the activities of the foreigners matched the immigration and work permit status, The raids also allowed the Denpasar officials the opportunity to turn over foreigners lacking the correct administrative paperwork to immigration officials for final disposition. Dunia complained that the owners of the residences in Denpasar try to complicate the work of inspectors by impeding enforcement efforts. I hope the owners of the residences will actively report the presence of foreigners living in their homes, he said. He said the most recent survey in Sanur Kauh discovered a South Korean, Jungchun Kuk, living on Jalan Batur Sari, Sanur, South but had failed to make the Denpasar, who refused to make all the required reports on his presences in Bali to local officials. Haerun, an immigration official on the survey team, said that Jungchun Kuk holds a temporary stay permit (KITAS), but had failed to make the mandatory reports to Manpower officials and the Police. Immigration officials continues to investigate the case, saying the Korean could be placed under arrest or deported from Indonesia if he is determined to have violated the law. www.balidiscovery.com

this?' If he hadn't said yes I wouldn't be here." Buckley admitted he has been trying to change the club's playing style, after Malthouse said at the weekend there had been a "massive shift". This claim was not supported by statistics which suggest that the club still targets the touchline rather than the corridor - a hallmark of Malthouse's time with the Magpies - but Buckley's comments suggest the former coach was right when he stated the players were in two minds as to what to do. "The players are still learning the way the coaches want them to play and the shifts we're trying to make," Buckley said. "When you've played so long in one way it's difficult to make that change." Buckley did strongly deny the claims from (former Kangaroos star) Wayne Carey that there are "six or seven" players who do not get on with Buckley. "I don't know where that's come from," Buckley said. "Nothing's cropped up like that. "I think I'd know if that was the case. "No rumours concern me. The only thing that concerns me is the way we play."

We should listen to Mick: Buckley

Nathan Buckley has played down the Eddie M c G u i r e - M i c k Malthouse spat adding that Collingwood should listen to any criticisms from the former coach.
Collingwood club president McGuire and the 2010 flag-winning coach Malthouse exchanged a war of words on Sunday and Monday culminating in McGuire stating that Malthouse "would not have a single friend at Collingwood". Collingwood assistant Rodney Eade said on Fox Sports that the drama had not affected Buckley and he certainly came across as unflustered when meeting the media this morning. "Mick's job is to comment in the media," Buckley said. "He's more informed than anyone out there. I think we should listen to what he says. "It's not great for the footy club, (but) I think it's been blown out of proportion. "If you read Eddie's 'middle class' comment, it came about the way the side played on Friday, so it was more a knock on the current group and myself than it was on Mick. "There's probably been a miscommunication that's been fostered by some outsiders that don't mind to see the miscommunication pushed up.

The Australian Poetry Competition had come down to two finalists; a university graduate and an old aboriginal. They were given a word, then allowed two minutes to study the word and come up with a poem that contained the word. The word they were given was 'TIMBUKTU' First to recite his poem was the university graduate. He stepped to the microphone and said: Slowly across the desert sand, Trekked a lonely caravan Men on camels two by two Destination Timbuktu. The crowd went crazy! No way could the old aboriginal top that, they thought. The old aboriginal calmly made his way to the microphone and recited; Me and Tim a huntin' went met three whores in a pop up tent They were three, and we was two, So I bucked one, and timbuktu. The aboriginal won.
Better Sign???
Two prostitutes were riding around town with a sign on top of their car which said: Two Prostitutes - $500.00. A policeman, seeing the sign, stopped them and told them they'd either have to remove the sign or go to jail. Just at that time, another car passed with a sign saying: 'JESUS SAVES.' One of the girls asked the officer, 'How come you don't stop them?!' 'Well, that's a little different,' the officer smiled, 'Their sign pertains to religion.' The following day the same police officer noticed the same two hookers driving around with a large sign on their car. He figured he had an easy arrest until he read their new sign: Two Fallen Angels Seeking Peter -- $500

Paddy and Paddy, two Irishmen, went out one day and each bought a pig. When they got home, Paddy turned to Paddy and said, "Paddy, me ol' mate, how are we going to tell who owns which Pig?" Paddy says, "Well Paddy, I'll cut one of de ears off my Pig, and ten we can tell them apart." "Ah, dat id be grand," says Paddy. This worked fine until a couple of weeks later, when Paddy stormed into the house. "Paddy" he said, "Your Pig has chewed the ear off my Pig. Now we got two pigs with one ear each.. How are we going to tell who owns which pig?" "Well Paddy," says Paddy,"I'll cut at other ear off my pig. Ten we'll ave two pigs and only one of them will avan ear". "Ah tat'd be grand" says Paddy. Again, this worked fine until a couple of weeks later, when Paddy again stormed into the house. "Paddy", he said, "Your pig has chewed the other ear offa my pig!!!" "Now, we got two pigs with no ears!!!. How we gonna tell who owns which pig?" "Ah, dis is serious, Paddy" said Paddy.. "I'll tell ya what I'll do. I'll cut de tail offa my pig. Den we'll av two pigs with no ears and only one tail." "Ah tat'd be grand" says Paddy. Another couple of weeks went by and............you guessed it, Paddy stormed into the house once more. "PADDY," shouted Paddy, "YOUR PIG HAS CHEWED THE TAIL OFFA MY PIG, AND NOW WE GOT TWO PIGS WITH NO EARS AND NO TAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. HOW DE ARE WE GONNA TELL 'EM APART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "Ah, bugger it" says Paddy, "how's about you ave the black one, and I'll ave the white one"

"I think the last thing Mick should feel he needs to do is justify the game plan or what the club did at his time. "That was unfortunate that he felt like he needed to." Buckley said that after having to watch what he said for years as Malthouse's heir apparent, he feels some sympathy for his former coach. "I've been in Mick's position now, through '08 and '09 and you only need to say one word out of place and it's blown up to be bigger than it is," Buckley said. "I feel for Mick in that regard because anything he says and does is going to be put on one side of the fence and Collingwood's going to be put on the other. "The fact is I had eight years as a player under Mick and then the last two years I worked as an assistant coach. I'm where I am because of him. "In 2009 we looked each other in the eye and said 'do we want to do

an issue he insists his side must fix quickly. "We were beaten in the contested ball in the teens again," Scott said. "We might have won the contested ball against Gold Coast [in the preseason cup], but that's about it. "I guarantee you that we'll spend a lot of time on making sure that if there are issues we remedy them quickly, because the season can get away from you. So we've got to fix those things. "If they're intent-related issues, we'll do our best to fix them as well, but really the players will be the ones putting the pressure on themselves." The one thing to please Scott was the way the Cats came back into the game in the final quarter scoring seven goals to leave a scoreline that the coach admitted flattered his side. "[We] did fight it out until the end and we had our chances, believe it or not, to steal it there at one stage," Scott said.

Scott bemoans soft Cats

Geelong coach Chris Scott slammed his side's performance in its upset 17-point loss to North Melbourne, with Steve Johnson particularly drawing his ire.
The reigning champions stand at 1-2 after the first three games despite a fantastic comeback victory over Hawthorn last Monday but Scott was in no mood to use the six-day turnaround as an excuse. "It's a feeble excuse - there's so many other factors that are more important," Scott said. "We went in with a healthy 22. Got one injury during the game but we had 21 guys there who are really capable and we didn't get the job done. Simple as that. "Our skill-level through the middle of the ground was poor. "We pride ourselves on our skills under pressure and ... tonight it wasn't good enough. "We'll review it really hard and we won't let anyone off the hook, including ourselves [the coaches], and we'll make sure we bounce back next week. "We've got pretty dangerous players down there. They're good names at least...Chapman and Johnson.

Getting beaten in contested possessions is a big bugbear of the Cats coach and is sue he insists his side must fix

allowed to trial for the 1964 Tokyo Games while living in the US to try his hand at acting. Swimming Australia president David Urquhart said his passing is a great loss for the sport. "The name Murray Rose is synonymous with success in the sport of swimming, and his achievements in Melbourne in 1956 will go down as the stuff of legend," he said. "Murray Rose is part of the swimming DNA in this country. His success inspired a generation and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends during this difficult time." Among the current and former swimmers to pay tribute was butterfly veteran Geoff Huegill, who said on Twitter: "Sad to hear a b o u t M u r r a y R o s e . Tr u e Australian swimming legend. My thoughts are with you and your family." In a joint statement released on Sunday night, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Sports Minister Kate Lundy said Australia had lost one of its greatest Olympians. "Murray was a true pioneer of Australian swimming and his impressive feats in the pool helped to shape Australia's destiny as a successful sporting nation. "Murray will be remembered fondly as a sporting legend who inspired the next generations of elite athletes and helped to propel Australia's sporting success in future Olympics. "There is no disputing that the Olympian was a champion in the pool, but Murray also made an immense contribution to the community through charity work and as patron of the The Rainbow Club which teaches children with a disability to swim."

Swimming great Rose dies

Tributes are flowing for t h e m a n o n c e considered Australia's greatest male Olympian.
Australian swimming legend and four-time Olympic gold medallist Murray Rose has died at the age of 73 after a battle with leukaemia. Rose, who won three gold medals at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, died in Sydney on Sunday morning and had been ill for several months. Swimming Australia confirmed Rose's passing while fellow Australian swimming great John Konrads said he and other former swimmers had been informed of Rose's death. "I'm just extremely sad at the passing of one of the greatest swimmers of all time and a great mate," Konrads said. Rose, like Betty Cuthbert, emerged from the 1956 Games as a national hero. Born in Birmingham, England, Rose came to Australia as an infant and started swimming in Sydney aged five. He was 17 when he became an Olympic champion, winning the first of his three 1956 gold medals in the final of the 4x200m freestyle relay. He followed with victories in the 400m freestyle and 1,500m freestyle, becoming the first swimmer in 36 years to win both individual events. After the Games, Rose moved to Los Angeles and attended the University of Southern California. He returned to Australia to train for the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he won the 400m freestyle and finished second to Konrads in the 1,500m. career - Only swimmer to have won the 400m freestyle twice in a row (now shared with Ian Thorpe) Melbourne 1956: Gold in 400m freestyle Gold in 1500m freestyle Gold in 4x200m freestyle Rome 1960: Gold in 400m freestyle Silver in 1500m freestyle Bronze in 4x200m freestyle He was the only swimmer to have won the 400m freestyle twice in a row; an honour now shared with Ian Thorpe (20002004). Olympic gold medallist Kieren Perkins recalls gaining advice from Rose before his Olympic debut in Barcelona in 1992. "We talked about what the actual Games itself would be like,'' Perkins said. "But being a 1500 metre swimmer, the thing that he left me with was just this notion around holding your rhythm and not letting you the middle of the race get away from you, and the aura of what it was you were a part of. "And that was really quite significant for me because it was the difference between breaking world records and not. That was something that I carried with me really for the rest of my career." Widely regarded as one of the sport's great distance swimmers, Rose was one of eight flagbearers of the Olympic flag at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Fellow Olympic champion Dawn Fraser remembers Rose as a great companion. "He was always willing to help the younger generation coming through and he'll be a great and sad loss to the Australian community," she said. Fraser said he may have won more Olympic gold had he been

German runaway Yvonne the cow nets moo-vie deal

Yvonne the German cow evaded helicopter searches, dodged the hunter's gun and even eschewed her calf and best friend for a life on the run.
Now the tale of the runaway cow, who captivated the nation last year when she bolted from her farm to escape slaughter and roamed free in the Bavarian countryside for three months, will provide fodder for a Hollywood animated film. "Cow on the Run," based on the daring dairy cow's escapades in the wild, will be produced by Munich-based film company Papa Loewe and American film producer Max Howard, whose previous credits include Walt Disney's "The Lion King." M i c h a e l A u f h a u s e r, founder of the Gut Aiderbichl animal sanctuary in southern Germany, which now looks after Yvonne, said the film was going to be "very romantic." "Yvonne even falls in love with a buck," he said of the film which is set to hit the silver screen in 2014. The farmyard fugitive broke through an electric fence on a farm near the Bavarian town of Muehldorf in May last year. Yvonne lived happily off the land for three months until she landed on a "most wanted" list after bolting in front of a police car. Authorities deemed the runaway a security risk and gave hunters the go ahead to gun her down. B u t Yv o n n e f o i l e d numerous attempts to capture her, and thwarted plans by animal activists to lure her back to the farmyard using her own calf, her friend and a breeding bull named Ernst. The canny cow was eventually captured in September after receiving a double dose of tranquilizers and was taken to the animal sanctuary after more than 90 days in the wild. "People thought she was a dumb cow and would not know what to do in the wild," Aufhauser said. "But she was so clever, nobody could catch her and that amazed people."

Dear Martha, My problem is my husband won't let me go anywhere unless he is with me. I have done nothing to disearn his trust. Before we got married he would let me go anywhere on my own. If he has to go to work he calls me about 20 times a day. I feel I don't want to be in this relationship any more, what should I do. Freda

Dear Freda, I would have it out with him and find out why he doesn't trust you anymore. If he can't come up with any answer leave him dear. No relationship is any good without trust. Maybe he has done something wrong and is trying to cover it up by being with you all the time so you don't hear what he has done. Martha

"As soon as we pass December if we are not all dead, we live on, and it is really not the end of the world ... Australian Will Power won the 38th IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, overcoming a penalty that dropped him to a sixth-row start for a victory that gives him the season points lead.
Power held off France's Simon Pagenaud on the last of 85 laps around the 3.17 km, 11-turn street circuit for the victory despite being among 14 cars that were penalised 10 starting spots for an improper Friday engine switch. Power, who won from a ninth-place start at Alabama earlier this month, was forced to start 12th despite finishing second in Saturday's qualifying, but he worked through the field to claim the third of the season's 16 races. "We had a penalty but we've overcome it," Power said. "I thought it would be very tough to win the race. That was one of my best wins I reckon. I love it." Power seized the season points lead with 127 with Brazil's Helio Castroneves 21 adrift in second and IndyCar rookie Pagenaud third on 100, four points ahead of New Zealand's Scott

That dropped HunterReay to sixth, still two spots ahead of Sato. "He broke for the inside and I figured he would give me a bit of room and he shut the door," Hunter-Reay said. Hunter-Reay's penalty also moved James Hinchcliffe into third, giving the Canadian his first IndyCar podium after four prior fourthplace finishes. "It's a shame to get it at the expense of him," Hinchcliffe said. "He was leading me through the whole way." The worst mishap came when Marco Andretti's car hit the back of Graham Rahal's car and went sideways in the air before landing on its wheels and skidding into a safety barrier. "I could have been killed," Andretti said. The incident came six months after the death of England's Dan Wheldon after his car went airborne and slammed into a safety fence in a race at Las Vegas. The season continues in two weeks at Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Unwelcome visitor leaves teeth wounds on Louisiana motel guest

A six-foot alligator which showed up at the front door of a Baton Rouge-area motel might have departed without incident had it not been for an overly helpful guest, who later checked out of the motel with puncture wounds.
A housekeeper at the Super 8 Motel just off Interstate 10 in Port Allen, Louisiana, spotted the gator as it crossed the driveway toward the motel at about 3 p.m. She called a maintenance worker, who called the hotel manager to come take a look. "He came up right by our front door to the lobby," Assistant Manager Tiffany Dunnam said. "He was just hanging out there." Dunnam said guests were more interested than frightened as they gathered said. Bleeding from stablike wounds from the alligator's teeth, the guest drove himself to a nearby hospital, Dunnam said. The gator was released into a large canal in the northwestern part of West Baton Rouge Parish, said Richard Summers, animal control director for the parish. When Summers arrived at the scene at the motel, a bit of a crowd had gathered, and the alligator was not in a good mood, he said. "Apparently people had been fooling with him for 45 minutes before we got there, and he wasn't happy," Summers said. He said he had no difficulty getting control of the alligator and maneuvering it into his truck. At this time of year, he said, gators sometimes wander away from their habitat and "they just get lost."

A front-desk clerk called the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and the animal control authorities, but before help arrived a motel guest from Mississippi decided to take matters into his own hands. "He said he had experience with gators and would try to immobilize it," Dunnam said. The guest may have exaggerated his expertise. "The gator snapped at him and caught his arm," Dunnam

defending premiers had thrashed Penrith just five days earlier. I think it's something the new commission or David Gallop needs to look at. "Quite frankly, the rest of the clubs are at a disadvantage." While stopping short of blaming the short turnaround for the loss, Toovey said it was an obvious disadvantage for the Sea Eagles. "It's not an excuse for our performance tonight, don't get me

Rosberg wins in China for first F1 victory

Germany's Nico Rosberg celebrated the first victory of his Formula One career with a commanding pole-to-flag win for Mercedes in China on Sunday.
While the son of 1982 champion Keke sprayed the champagne to mark the end of an 111-race wait, the German manufacturer rolled back the decades to savour their first grand prix success as a works team since 1955. "Brilliant race, Nico. Just brilliant," yelled team principal Ross Brawn over the radio as the 26-year-old let out a long and loud whoop of delight after taking the chequered flag. Britain's Jenson Button finished a distant second for Mercedes-powered McLaren, 20.6 seconds behind, with team-mate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton third for the third race in a row to take the championship lead. Australian Mark Webber was fourth for Red Bull with double world champion team mate Sebastian Vettel fifth after starting 11th, his lowest grid placing since 2009. Hamilton now has 45 points after three races to Button's 43. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who had led before Shanghai, finished ninth and dropped to third overall with 37. Rosberg's victory was the first by Mercedes, as a works team, since 1955, when Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio won that year's season-ending Italian Grand Prix from pole. Mercedes pulled out of Formula One as a works team in 1955 and did not return, other than as an engine partner, until 2010 after buying the title-winning Brawn team. While Rosberg celebrated, drenching Mercedes motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug in champagne on the podium with the eager assistance of Button and Hamilton, there was disappointment for team mate Michael Schumacher. The seven times world champion, winner of a record 91 races, had started alongside Rosberg on the front row but the 43-year-old's hopes of a first podium appearance since he was at Ferrari in 2006, disappeared on lap 13 after a pitstop. To the despair of the mechanic on the front right wheel, Schumacher was given the signal to go before the nut was attached properly. He rejoined the race before having to pull off and retire. "The front wheel got a bit loose, but I don't know what happened. I feel a bit sorry for one of my boys, but that's part of the game," Schumacher said philosophically. Button's hopes of a second win in three races were also dashed in the pits when the crew struggled with the rear left, losing vital seconds, at his third and final stop. Frenchman Romain Grosjean took his first points for Lotus with sixth place, ahead of the Williams cars of Brazilian Bruno Senna and Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado. Sauber's Japanese Kamui Kobayashi took the final point for Sauber in 10th.

A bemused Manly coach Geoff Toovey wants the ARL Commission to make fairer scheduling its first priority, arguing heavyweight Brisbane has an unfair advantage.
