Substance Misuse Training Proposal

Context:

Drug and Alcohol Education Services (DAES) is a company specialising in providing training
and awareness programmes for individuals, groups or organisations wishing to develop a
greater understanding of, and how to respond to, the problems associated with drugs, alcohol
addiction and abuse.
Our response

Drug and Alcohol Education Services is ideally placed to carry out this piece of training. DAES
has extensive experience in developing and delivering drug education and training programmes.
DAES training programme will assist learning and development through training to meet the
health and wellbeing needs of young people in the care of Solihull MBC. Our overall goal will be
to deliver a training programme which will:

• Provide Information about substances their use and effects


• Identify appropriate responses to drug and alcohol related incidents
• Assess drug and alcohol related needs and identify appropriate interventions

The above will also contribute to supporting young people to reach their potential. The
Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances to
achieve what they want in life.

Outcome of the work

As a result of this training

Foster Carer’s and Social Workers learning outcomes:

 Develop a detailed awareness about commonly used controlled drugs.

 Be able to identify drug groups, legislation and recognise indications of substance use
and misuse.

 Gain skills using policy and procedure to provide young people with knowledge and
information about substance misuse

 Use a range of contexts raise awareness and educate young people about the harms
associated with substance misuse
.
 Develop practical initial assessment skills using a recognised screening tool.

The above training will be underpinned by DANOS

The units below relate to the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards which specify
the standards of performance that people in the drugs and alcohol field should be working to.
They also describe the knowledge and skills workers need in order to perform to the required

Evaluations - Each session will be evaluated and feedback used to

With a written evaluation feedback report. This will cover the training
course and future identified learning

Core Competencies

We find it useful in planning for a training programme to identify some of the core competencies
that will support trainees. By recognising these at the outset, we find it possible to address and
minimise these issues early on to achieve outcomes for the client. The competencies identified
below will be integrated into the training delivered to maximise effective care for people
experiencing substance misuse concerns: Trainees will be encouraged to build and develop
capabilities in the following areas

• Values and Attitudes


• Utilising Knowledge
• Skills and Practice Development

Timescale
DAES has the capacity to conduct the training within the timescale (i.e. by the end of March
2008).

Costs

DAES is able to undertake this project for £675 See below for a full breakdown of costs.

All costs are calculated at £600 per day

This proposal does not include any costs of hiring rooms, refreshments or costs other than those
specified above. The above does include expenses incurred by the consultants for delivering
the work, such as travel costs.

DAES normal policy regarding payment is to invoice for 50% of the total cost at the
project commencement and 50% on completion

This work will be delivered by Karen Power

Karen Power – Trainer Consultant

Karen Power has ten years of experience working in the substance misuse field as a treatment
practitioner, trainer and consultant. Karen has provided consultancy services on a number of
voluntary, statutory and corporate clients. Her extensive experience in developing training
programmes for a wide a varied audience including: Service Managers, Treatment Practitioners,
Counselors, School Teachers, Parents and Carers, Nurses and social Care providers.

have a strong track-record in delivering and developing training programmes for, professionals,
young people and community members. Our training work in the field of substance misuse has
guided treatment practitioners and drug educators. We have also contributed to writing
accredited drug education courses for Westminster Adult Education Service.
