What Is an Fe-36 Fire Extinguisher?

Choosing the right kind of fire extinguisher is an important part of protecting your home from fire hazards. Fire extinguishers equipped with the chemical Fe-36 are designed to provide effective fire suppression without using toxic chemicals. Fe-36 is a proprietary fire suppressant developed by the Dupont Corporation for use in portable fire extinguishers and stationary fire suppressant systems. Fe-36 equipped fire extinguishers are designed to replace older Haylon-based fire extinguisher.

Properties
Fe-36 is the trademarked name of the chemical suppressant used in newer fire extinguishers. Fe-36 -- or HFC-236fa -- uses the chemical hexafluoropropane to extinguish fires. Fe-36 is stored as a liquid gas that allows the user to accurately deliver suppressant to the source of the fire. Once it is released, Fe-36 reverts to a gaseous form that extinguishes fires using a combination of chemical reactions and oxygen deprivation to extinguish the fire.

Uses
Fe-36 equipped fire extinguishers effectively suppress most home fire hazards. Fe-36 extinguishers are designed to control class A, B and C fire hazards. Class A fire hazards include paper, wood, cloth and other common flammable household materials. Class B fires hazards include grease, oil and other flammable liquids commonly found in the kitchen or garage. Class C fire hazards are electrical hazards that are found throughout the home. Although Fe-36 fire extinguishers are effective against most types of fire hazard, they are not suitable for use with Class D fire hazards. Class D fire hazards are flammable metals that react strongly with the chemical used in Fe-36 extinguishers.

BenefitsFe-36 is an alternative to the chemical Haylon with a comparatively low acute toxicity level. Fe-36 fire
extinguishers are designed to suppress fires without leaving residue or damaging sensitive equipment. Fe-36 causes little to no change in plastics and most elastomeric or metal materials that it comes in contact with. Fe-36's low toxicity and lack of residue make it useful in confined spaces, areas with sensitive equipment or areas that are regularly occupied. Fe-36 is noncarcinogenic chemical and has an ozone depletion rating of zero, making it more environmentally friendly than Haylon.

Hazards
Fe-36 is stored in the form of a liquefied gas and exits the extinguisher at a very low temperature. Direct contact between Fe-36 and the skin or eyes causes cold burns and frostbite. Large quantities of Fe-36 discharged into a confined space can displace the breathable atmosphere in the room causing suffocation. Although Fe-36 does not react with most metals, it reacts strongly with the metallic form of alkaline earth metals, and powdered aluminum and magnesium.
