Project Vyoma

Description
Vyoma is a team of RVCE students from Mechanical, ECE, CSE and IT departments working on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Started in 2007, the team in association with various corporate organizations has participated in Aerodesign competitions at both national and international level.

Year -1 (07-08)
Technical Highlights:
Wingspan: 90 in. Motor: 10 cc 2-stroke Internal Combustion Engine OS0.61 FX Propeller: 12 x 6 Empty Weight: 23.06 lbs. //take-off weight was 27.56 lbs (12.5 kg) Payload capacity: 4.5 lbs. Dimensions: (L x W x H) 62.11 x 90 x 19 (including motor)

Achievements:
First team from Asia to participate in SAE Aerodesign Ranked 18th out of 40 teams, adjudged with Outstanding Performance by SAE Aerodesign 2008 Awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil, for being the first and only team to represent India at SAE Aerodesign 2008

Research was done on composite materials and how it could be used to enhance the performance and score of the team. Wingspan: 90 in. Motor: 10 cc 2-stroke Internal Combustion Engine OS0.61 FX Propeller: 12 x 6 Empty Weight: 21.96 lbs. //take-off weight was 30.96 lbs. (14 kg) Payload capacity: 9 lbs. Dimensions: (L x W x H) 62.96 x 90 x 20.59 (including motor) Ranked 20th out 43 teams at SAE Aerodesign 2009

Technical Highlights:

Shifting the focus of research to Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Introduction of electric propulsion. Wingspan: 39.13 in. Motor: AXi 2826/12 Propeller: 12 x 6 Empty weight: 2.5 lbs. //sponsorship proposal said that it could carry twice its own weight Payload capacity: 5 lbs. Dimensions: 28.97 x 39.31 x 18.086 (including motor) The team carried the Highest Payload in the competition among 75 teams.

Achievements:
Ranked 8th out 75 teams at SAE Aerodesign 2011 Conducted Aero-Design competitions for enthusiastic students in inter collegiate fests like Vortex 11.

Technical Highlights:
The team aimed to build the lightest aircraft in its history, weighing less than 300 grams. Wingspan: 42.37 in. Motor: AXi 2208/26 Propeller: 7.5 x 4 Empty weight: 0.65 lbs. //294 g Payload capacity: 1.32 lbs. Dimensions: (L x W x H) 18.52 x 42.37 x 10.87 (including motor) The team ventured into Genetic Algorithm (GA) to get the most optimal design for the airplane, one of the firsts in this field.
