Scope of Service
B1 is an acute care Medical Pediatric Unit. Patients range in age from the neonate through to 14 years. Care is on-going 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Consultant/Ancillary Specialties:
Pediatric Surgery Anesthesia Cardiology Ophthalmology Orthopedics Dental Neurophysiology Speech Therapy Physical Therapy

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO SERVICE Pediatric patients less than 14 years old . Patients must be hemo dynamically stable. Patients who require nursing care for medical diagnoses. STAFFING PLAN Number and Mix of Staff: Staffing is calculated using 7.7 nursing hours per patient day (NHPPD). Registered Nurses work 12 hour shifts utilizing a modified form of Primary Nursing Care, with a modified Modular Team Nursing for day shifts. The team consists of the Head Nurse and Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Charge Nurse and Staff Nurses, Ward Clerks and Patient Care Assistants. Team members share responsibility for 24 hour Unit supervision and quality of care delivered. Patient assignments are made each shift by the Charge Nurse / Team Leader and are based on the following criteria and patient classification: Complexity of patient condition, nursing assessment and care required Dynamics of patient status Type of technology involved in caring for the patient

Infection control and safety issues

Staffing Variances: When more staff is needed for the shift than has been scheduled, the Inpatient Nursing Office and Head Nurse are notified of the additional staff required. Staff are then temporarily assigned from other areas or called in from home. If the Unit has an excess number of staff even after considering the above items, the Inpatient Nursing Office is notified. These nurses are then utilized in other Pediatric Units or rescheduled. STAFF QUALIFICATIONS Qualifications / Licences / Certifications required by Staff: Staff Nurse: Current Registered Nurse Licensure or Registration from country of origin Minimum two (2) years current pediatric experience Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Complete hospital and unit orientation Ability to obtain Registration with Saudi Commission for Health Specialities (on arrival) Ward Clerk (WC) & Patient Care Assistants (PCA): Must be bilingual: English & Arabic In-Services / Continuing Education Programmes: In-services are organized by the Unit Clinical Instructor, Head Nurse, Clinical Nurse Coordinator and each Staff Nurse. They occur monthly or as needed; and contribute significantly to staff competency Topic selection is guided by Physician, Management or Staff request; Head Nurse or Clinical Instructor evaluation; or may be the result of needs identified through Quality Management processes. Assessment, Planning, Intervention, Evaluation Charting done on EMR (Electronic Medical Record) Parent / Caregiver education Plan of Care Clinical Pathway / Protocols / Guidelines Discharge planning process Psychosocial support METHOD OF COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS: Internal and External Methods of Communication: Staff meetings are held monthly or as the need arises. Written information is communicated via memoranda. Unit communication boards and online Shared Folders display general hospital announcements, education opportunities, and written notifications. COMMITTEE INVOLVEMENT Practice, Quality Management, Informatics, Education Nursing staff have the opportunity for committee involvement; Unit level involvement is incorporated into monthly Staff Meetings; Departmental involvement is encouraged Shared Governance and Unit Based Councils. QUALITY OF SERVICE Identify areas in need of improvement. Encourage staff participation in Quality Improvement activities. Review Adverse Occurrence data and implement improvement strategies as appropriate. Offer educational programs and experiences to increase staff knowledge and skills, including opportunities for staff to attend Symposia on site, nationally and internationally. Provide positive educational / learning experiences for patients and their families. Develop patient teaching programs and materials. Review Patient Satisfaction Data and implement strategies as appropriate.
