    My story will be set in New York city a few months before the 1992 Presidential election. I plan on using a third party narrative to tell this story. My story will also make use of flashbacks in order to fill in vital parts of the plot.

    FarelBecker PurposeStatement ThereareseveralreasonsIhavechosentoworkwiththisconcept.Ihavealwaysenjoyednovelsand moviesthathavedealtwithcomplicatedissueslikegovernmentcorruptionandcorporateespionage. Forthisreasonmanyofthethemesinmystorywillrevolvearoundtheseideas.Iwillcommunicate thesethemestotheaudiencebyputtingmycharactersinstressfulscenarioswheretheymustmakevery difficultchoices.Thechoicescharactersmakedeterminetheirroleinthestory.Whilemostbooksand movieshaveanobviousprotagonistandantagonistitmaybedifficultdeterminecharacterrolesinmy story.Thisisbecausebothmyprotagonistandantagonistareveryflawedpeople.Whatsetsthem apart,isagainthechoicestheymake. MystorywillbesetinNewYorkcityafewmonthsbeforethe1992Presidentialelection.Thiswasa timeofpeace,butalsoatimeofpoliticalandsocialrevolution.Peoplewantedchangeandthisdesire wasmanifestedthroughpopcultureandmedia.Partofmystorywillalsobedrawnfromcertain strategiceventsduringthePersianGulfWar.

    Iwilltellthisstoryfromtwoverydifferentperspectives.Thefirstwillbefromtheperceptiveofmy mainprotagonist,JohnRenalds,anambitious,celebrityreporter.Thesecondwouldbefromthe perspectiveofSenatorRalphEdmonds,aPresidentialcandidateandcorruptpolitician.These characterswillbothbeofferedchancestogainpoweratthecostoftheirmorality.Thewaytheyreactto

    FarelBecker thesechoiceswilldeterminetheirroleinmystory.Thiswillmakemyperspectivesuniquebecausethe audiencewillnotbeableimmediatelytelltheroleofacharacter.Mystorywillalsomaketheuseof flashbacksinordertogivedepthtotheplotandfillinvitalpartsofthestory.Iplanonusingthese flashbackstotellthestoryofJohnRenalds'childhoodandtotellthestoryofEarlRandolf,aGulfWar veteran.

    Iplanonusingathirdpartynarrativetotellthisstory.Iconsideredusingafirstpersonnarrative,but afterexperimentingwithitIfounditwasmuchmoredifficultthanIimagined.Iwillmostlyconveymy themesthroughanarrativeperspectivebyhavingcharactersthatrepresentthethemesIwantto communicate.However,Iwillalsomakeuseofmanyscenesinmystorytoconveyimportantthemesin mystory.

    IwilluseindividualcharactersandeventstohighlightspecificthemesIamtryingtoconveytomy audience.However,thesecharacterswillnotbeblackandwhite.Eachcharacterwillallbeflawed, otherwisethestorywouldbeboringandpredictable.Forexampleacharactermaydosomethingevil becausehewasputintoadesperatesituation,buttheaudiencewillstillbeabletosympathizewithhim onsomelevels.Thisaddsalotmoredepthtoindividualcharactersandgivesthestoryaninteresting twist.AsaresultalmostallthecharactersIwriteaboutwillbedynamicandchangethroughoutthe story.Ibelievethisinitselfisauniquewayoftellingastory.
