Preparing for Paper 1:

Paper 1 covers the three perspectives and is divided into two parts. It takes a total of two hours Part 1: Short answers on the three perspectives: you will answer three short answer questions, one on each perspective. Each will be worth 8 marks, and you will have approximately 20 minutes to answer each one Biological Perspective: You may expect a question from any of the ten sections, 2.1-2.10 Cognitive Perspective: You may expect a question from any of the nine sections, 3.1-3.9 Sociocultural Perspective: You may expect a question from any of the 12 sections, 4.1-4.12 Part 2: Essay questions on the three perspectives. There will be one question from each of the perspectives, and you will chose only one of these to answer. You will have approximately 1 hour to answer, and the essay is worth 8 marks. Biological Perspective: You may expect a question from sections 2.5-2.10 Cognitive Perspective: You may expect a question from sections 3.2-3.3, and 3.5-3.9 Sociocultural Perspective: You may expect a question from sections 4.3 & 4.4, 4.7-4.9, and 4.11 In each of the essay questions, your answer should include how and why particular research methods are used at that level, as well any ethical issues concerning the methods Biological Perspective 2.1 Outline Principles that define the biological perspective 2.2 Examine one study related to localization of function in the brain 2.3 Explain, using one or more examples, the effects of neurotransmission on human behavior. 2.4 Explain, using human example, the function of two hormones on human behavior. 2.5* Discuss two effects of the environment on physiological processes 2.6* Examine one interaction between cognition and physiology in terms of behavior 2.7* Discuss the use of brain-imaging technologies in investigating the relationship between biological factors and behavior 2.8* Discuss the extent to which genetics influences behavior 2.9* Examine one evolutionary explanation of behavior 2.10* Discuss ethical considerations in research into genetic influences on behavior.

Cognitive Perspective 3.1 Outline principles that define the cognitive level of analysis and explain how these principles may be demonstrated in research 3.2* Evaluate schema theory 3.3* Evaluate two models of theories of one cognitive process with reference to research studies. 3.4 Explain how biological factors may affect one cognitive process 3.5* Discuss how social or cultural factors affect one cognitive process 3.6* Evaluate the extent to which a cognitive process is reliable 3.7* Discuss the use of technology in investigating cognitive processes 3.8* Tow hat extent do cognitive and biological factors interact in emotion? 3.9 * Evaluate one theory of how emotion may affect one cognitive process Sociocultural Perspective 4.1 Outline principles that define the sociocultural level of analysis 4.2 Describe the role of situational and dispositional factors in explaining behavior. 4.3* Discuss two errors in attributions 4.4* Evaluate social identity theory 4.5 Explain the formation of stereotypes and their effect on behavior 4.6 Explain social learning theory, making reference to two relevant theories. 4.7* Compliance techniques 4.8* Evaluate research on conformity to group norms 4.9* Discuss factors influencing conformity 4.10 Define the terms culture and cultural norms 4.11* Examine the role of two cultural dimensions on behavior 4.12 Explain, using examples, emic and etic concepts. * Indicates possible essay question topic Mark Bands for Part 1 (8 total marks) Marks 0 1-3 4-6 Level Descriptor The answer does not reach a standard described by the descriptors below. There is an attempt to answer the question, but knowledge and understanding is limited, often inaccurate, or of marginal relevance to the question. The question is partially answered. Knowledge and understanding is accurate but limited. Either the command term is not effectively addressed or the response is not sufficiently explicit in answering the question. The question is answered in a focused and effective manner and meets the demands of the command term. The response is supported by appropriate and accurate knowledge and understanding of research.
