MSW COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION


On Wednesday May 30, 2012, Second year students will be tested in an oral comprehensive examination. Students are to use their 2nd year field internship as the basis of the exam. The exam will consist of two elements: a 1-2 page brief in digital and written forms, submitted one week prior to the examination (Wednesday May 23) oral responses to questions from a panel of two faculty The Brief (2 page single space maximum) The purpose of the brief is to orient the faculty examiners, so that they will have an a priori understanding of essential elements of the students field setting and experience. Heading: in the upper right hand corner, enter your name, followed by your student ID. The words Comprehensive Exam Brief should appear below your name/ID. Hard copies to be given to Tanya Youssephzadeh. Digital copies are to be emailed to her at: mswcompexam@publicaffairs.ucla.edu Describe/discuss: 1. The name of the agency, and its broad mission. As indicated, note the sub-section/unit of the agency in which you had most of your experience, and its specific mission or purpose. 2. Your role in the agency (major role, or role of most relevance for what follows) 3. Identify and describe a micro or macro practice intervention** in which you participated, with and/or on behalf of one or more individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and/or policy arenas. Identify any relevant theory and research on which the intervention is based. You may wish to describe a logic model. 4. How was the problem or issue defined and assessed? 5. Describe the elements of the intervention that you used and whether they were effective 6. Do you think your intervention was culturally relevant/ appropriate? Why or why not?

Oral Exam: Students will be assigned a time, room and waiting area for their oral exam. Students who have completed their oral exam are not to discuss any aspects of the exam, such as the format or questions, with any other student until the end of the exam day. The exam is 10 minutes maximum, and students should arrive at their assigned waiting area five minutes prior to the slated exam time. Oral exams will be audio recorded. All recordings will be destroyed by Nov 1, 2012. (*at the request of the examiners, a 3rd examiner may review the recording) Questions/areas of exploration may include: Evidence used to support the selection of this intervention? Describe any effort to search for evidence to support the chosen approach. Goals of the intervention? Factors related to diversity in selecting, planning and implementing this intervention. Legal, cost, political, historical or organizational constraints or influences in the approach taken. How was the implementation of the intervention determined, i.e., documentation/measurement of the elements of the intervention that was conducted? What was the outcome of the intervention? How was this determined, i.e., what data were obtained to indicate the outcome/progress? If the intervention was not successful*** suggestions/ reasons for why it might not have achieved the desired outcome?

All students are required to pass the oral component of the examination in order to complete the program and receive the MSW degree. Grading is Pass/Fail. Students who fail the oral examination will be required to repeat the exam at a later date prior to graduation. Faculty members not involved in the earlier exam will conduct the second exam. Students failing the second exam will not graduate prior to graduation exercises. ========================================================= *In the interest of fairness to all, the oral portion of the exam will be conducted under conditions that are as uniform as possible. If your answers are too brief or inadequate, the examiners may ask you to expound. Conversely, if your answer extends beyond two or three minutes, the examiner may indicate that it is time to move on to another question. When 8 minutes have elapsed, you will be told that the oral exam is nearing the end. You will not be permitted to continue beyond 10 minutes. ** An intervention is an action undertaken by a social worker or other helping agent, usually in concert with a client or other affected party, to enhance or maintain the functioning and well-being of an individual, family, group, community, or population.

Broadly conceived, a macro intervention seeks to promote social well-being, and may encompass: programs to deliver services to individuals, families and groups or communities; or programs/policies to improve broad sectors of society, from neighborhoods to specific groups, to the public at large. ***Note: Intervention Success is not an exam criterion; rather, your ability to think critically about the intervention is the grading criterion. ============================================================= After receiving the briefs on May 23, the two co-examiners will stipulate questions to be asked of each student, based in part on the brief submitted (not to be revealed to students prior to the oral exam). On the day of the oral exam, the co-examiners will discuss each student briefly prior to inviting the student into the exam room, and again briefly after the student leaves the room. Students will be notified of the results of the exam by June 6th.
