Levels Levels available c = complete; p = partial; n = not at all Design Aspect 1: Defining the problem and selecting variables Focused Research Question Identifies the dependent, independent and control variables Use the form How does/do <independent variable(s)> affect <dependent variable(s)>? Able to formulate an hypotheses using scientific knowledge and understanding Include all relevant control variables (related to method, materials, and/or environment) Able to make qualitative and quantitative predictions between the dependent and independent variable Aspect 2: Controlling Variables Lists the apparatus used Draws a labeled diagram of the apparatus Describes how the independent and dependent variable is measures and changed In Procedure, explain specifically how you will keep each control variables constant. Aspect 3: Developing a method for collecting data Describe several (5+) trials for each measurement. Specify the values you will choose for the independent variables. If using data-logger, describe settings and how relevant data is extracted from graph/data produced. Your design must make it possible to create lines of best fit (4+ data points needed for each line) Total Grade: c p n (2) (1) (0)

Data Collection and Processing & Conclusion and Evaluation

Levels available c = complete; p = partial; n = not at all Levels c p n (2) (1) (0) Data Collection and Processing (DCP) Aspect 1: Recording Raw Data Include completely unprocessed RAW data. Draws a table with a column for each measurement with headings and units Similar measurements must have same # of decimal places, reflective of limits of measuring device States the uncertainty of the measuring instrument in each data column header Uses the correct number of decimal places for all data in the table States and explains how the measuring instrument uncertainty was calculated The number of decimal places in the data presented does not exceed the limit of the uncertainty Dont forget units, uncertainties, and labels on all data, or explain when not relevant. Comments on any observations that are relevant Aspect 2: Processing Raw Data Show sample calculations for all processing (even simple calculations like averages). Processes the data correctly by averaging, squaring, taking the square root etc Processed data is displayed in a separate table to the raw data The processed data table contains headings, units Calculates and displays the uncertainties in the spread of repeated measurements (max-min)/2 Calculates and displays the uncertainties in the processed data (max-min)/2. Uncertainty values must also be calculated in the processed data (include in sample calculations). The number of decimal places in each column presented is consistent with each other and the uncertainty There must be at least one graph showing relationship between independent & dependent variables. Aspect 3: Presenting Processed Data Graphs must always be scatter plots, with proper labeling (including units) in linear form Uncertainty bars presented on graphs. If too small to see, indicate this. Draws a correct line of best fit and displays the equation of the line in the y = mx + c form Draws the maximum and minimum gradient within the error bars Draw lines of min / max gradient (slopes), and determine uncertainty for slope and/or intercept (whichever is relevant). If cant draw uncertainties, calculate using values instead. Total Grade: Conclusion and Evaluation (CE) Aspect 1: Concluding Answer the research question, summarizing how it was obtained. Must say whether the hypothesis is valid or not States whether the graph supports the original hypothesis Include an assessment of the uncertainty of the results. Discuss about MOST important error/ anomaly Justify your conclusion with proper data interpretation If there is an accepted value, calculate percentage error, and comment on this. Aspect 2 - Evaluating Procedures Find 3 important sources of error in the experiment (consider error in method/material/environment). Comment (scientifically) on how these sources of error may have affected the results (increased? decreased?) Comment on the significance these sources of error (how much of a difference did they make?). Aspect 3 - Improving Investigations For each limitation in Aspect 2, describe in detail how they could be fixed. If you are suggesting different equipment, be specific. Try to include the Trail is one way of improving the result. Total Grade: Authenticity: I confirm this assignment is my own work.
