Introduction
HP Storage released SAN/iQ version 9.5 for the HP P4000 LeftHand SAN storage family in October, 2011. This document is designed to provide an introduction to the new features that comprise the release. More information on the HP P4000 LeftHand SAN products can be found at www.hp.com/go/p4000.

New Features
Application Managed Snapshots for VMware ESX
SAN/iQ 9.5 will expand Application Integration functionality of the P4000 to include VMware integrated snapshots. The existing HP P4000 Windows Solution Pack is replaced by the new Application Integration Solution Pack which includes the Application Aware Snapshot Manager. This tool allows users to take Application Aware snapshots for both VMware and Windows volumes and create application consistent, point in time copies for speedy and reliable recovery of VMs.

Users configure IP addresses of Virtual Center (vCenter) server in the P4000 Centralized Management Console
(CMC)

The CMC communicates with vCenter server during the snapshot process vCenter quiesces the VMs and takes a VMware snapshot. VMware tools within guest quiesces the applications The SAN/iQ hardware snapshot contains VMware snapshots which are visible to ESX when SAN/iQ snaps are
presented to the host

Figure 1: vCenter Server IP address is configured as Controlling Server in the CMC

Application Managed Snapshots for Hyper-V

SAN/iQ 9.5 supports the Hyper-V VSS writer allowing users to take quiesced snapshots of Hyper-V VMs. Schedule local and/or remote application aware snapshots of Hyper-V VMs.

Enabled with P4000 Application Aware Snapshot Manager SAN/iQ communicates with the Hyper-V host during snapshots process VMs are quiesced by Hyper-V VSS writer SAN/iQ snapshots contain application consistent snapshots of VMs

SAN Status Home Page

Administrators can now get a global view of larger environments with multiple management groups. The new SAN Status home page presents vitals of the entire P4000 storage environment in a single view.

All new home page for the CMC Provides single pane of glass view of entire P4000 environment Key information for all Management Groups displayed in a single, customizable view Undockable sections of the CMC that sit on the desktop allow monitoring of SAN Status while performing other
administrative tasks

Peer Motion Data Mobility with Cluster Swap

SAN/iQ has the ability to move data seamlessly and on-line between clusters or tiers of storage. Cluster refreshes/replacements can be done online with just a few clicks. The system automatically rebalances whenever cluster membership is changed in any way. These functions are easier than ever with SAN/iQ 9.5. Peer Motion functionalities such as Cluster Swap are simplified for maximum ease of us.

Cluster Swap functionality allows users to replace or upgrade P4000 clusters with just a few clicks. No
maintenance windows and no downtime required

New Edit Cluster menu item guides users to better decisions when adding, removing or exchanging nodes Easily migrate data online between P4000 tiers with HP Peer Motion

Remote Copy Performance Improvements

Improved change tracking mechanism Less time required to scan volumes Able to support more frequent snaps especially for large volumes with low change rates Reduces RPOs for DR solutions Test example: 50% improvement in copy time on 2TB volume with 10GB of changes.
