Abstract

Nowadays, computer and internet became parts of our daily life. These enable us to do things easier and faster. They also help us to communicate to other people especially to those who are far. Many people rely many things on the computer and internet. With the overuse of these, there is a potential for addiction. And addiction causes many negative effects to people especially to the students. The effects were escapism to reality, dishonesty, and financial problems. With these effects they have experienced, they have been also affected academically by their poor performance at class.

According to Dr. Marc Kern, when you're preoccupied with a video game or something like that, well you don't have to go and negotiate with the local bully, or the girls, or whatever. You get all your needs met in this mechanical way, and in a way you're stunted in learning things you would normally learn just by being alive, and going to school, and by being out there. It stifles, because these mechanisms do seem to work efficiently, effectively and predictably and it's reinforcing, so you get an illusion that you have the skills to get out there and make it in the real world, when in actuality, you really have forgone them and you may be out of sync with your contemporaries and they have the skills, and you don't and then you're going to withdraw more into video machines, because you're further behind as the weeks and years go on. This is the reason why a lot of students prefer to play computer games until they are not satisfied on playing. On the other hand, cyber crimes is now increasing because of internet addiction. It is reason why some crimes such as rape, robbery, and even murder happen. People today use the social networking sites to do these crimes.

Computer and internet are really important to us. But anything that is abused causes negative effects. People, especially the students, should now their limitations and be responsible enough to protect themselves. The researcher recommends that parents must observe and limit their childs activities; the teachers should not always advise their students to use computer to do researches; schools should elaborate the computer ethics; the government should have more fortified laws against cyber crimes; and the students should know how to manage their time between their studies and computer activities.

Internet use. It seems that you can develop a tolerance to Internet use, as you may need greater amounts of time online or to access more stimulating material. Although Web sites need not be sexual in nature in order to become addictive, they often are for a great number of Netheads. Of those who meet the criteria for Internet addiction, 62 percent regularly logged on to pornography sites, and reported experiencing sexual arousal while online "sometimes." They spent an average of over four hours per week viewing material on the adult sites, and 37.5 percent reported masturbating while online! For these Internet users, the Net offered a high degree of stimulation and sexual excitement. Most Internet addicts are young, Dr Mark socially unskilled men," he told Griffiths BBC News Online. "It's tragic these people have the same problems as any other addict." However, he said Internet addiction was a small problem at present, but Dr Young's criteria classified too many people as addicted to the Internet. "A lot of these people aren't addicted to the Internet - they're addicted to sex or gambling and they use the Internet as a tool," he said. Aside from academic obligations, children and young people have relatively few responsibilities to shirk by playing games. When an adult with dependents becomes addicted to computer games, however, the addiction can shatter a family. Game obsession takes away from time spent with family, which can lead to neglect of children and weakening of marriage bonds.

Studies of the negative effects of television addiction indicate that TV viewing can seriously hamper a child's proper education and learning when done either to excess or when the content proves too extreme. Such activities distract children from learning, create negative feelings and emotions that interfere with proper education, and can lead to addiction. One mother said that she limited her children's access to computer games after she discovered that, not only were they chronically fighting over these games, but her year old baby was making computer game sounds
