County Executive Daniel McCoy and Chairman of the Legislature Shawn Morse encourage Albany County residents to participate in National Drug Take-Back Day. County Executive McCoy stated, Safety is critical when dealing with the disposal of unused prescription and overthe-counter medications. We want to make sure we protect the environment and those around us. Its dangerous to keep unused prescription and over-the-counter medications in the house. Kids might accidentally take them and the results could be deadly. Chairman Morse, who co-sponsored County legislation, intended to address potential misuse of prescription drugs in Albany County said, Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. Unused medications that are flushed down the toilet or poured down the sink can enter the water supply, harming fish and other wildlife and posing a potential risk to people. He said, It is important to raise awareness of this problem and to assure that the residents of Albany County have available a safe and effective method of disposing of their unused or expired prescription drugs. The Albany County Department of Health is partnering with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to encourage residents to safely dispose of unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at local collection sites on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
If you have unused medications to get rid of, bring them to a local collection site on Saturday, April 28th between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
