Geography of Akure. Akure is the capital town of Ondo State situated in Akure South Local Government of Ondo State.

Various sawmilling industries under study are located in Ogbese and Akure the State capital. Akure the capital of Ondo State is situated two hundred and four (204) Kilometers north of east of Lagos, then the capital cities of republic of Nigeria and about two hundred and eighty two (282) kilometers to the new Capital Territory Abuja. Akure is also the Headquarter of Akure South Local Government Area. The town spreads over an area of about (16sq km.) sixteen square kilometers and the population according to the Nigerian population census 1991 is 239,129 and that of Akure South Local Government population census of 2006 is 353,211. Akure lies on the latitude 70 15 north of the equator and longitude 50 15 east of the Greenwich meridian. It is about (250m) two hundred and fifty meters above the sea level and the land toward Ado-Ekiti is hilly and studded with large granite formations said to be volcanic origin. It is situated in the humid tropical region of Nigeria; Akure enjoys abundant rainfall most of the year. During the month of December, January and February, the cooler dry continental air from the North-East prevails. The rainy season lasts from March to October.

Historical Background of Akure. The history of Akure, like other Yorubas towns and villages is traced to Oduduwa, the great ancestor of the Yoruba race. The actual date of which Akure was founded is unknown, but history tells of how Akure got its name. Omoloju, the son of Iyangede of Epe, a village ten kilometers North of Ondo was first person to settle on the site of Akure. While trying to clear a bush-path on the spot between Isinkan and Oke-Aro junctions on Arakale road, the wrist beads (akun) he wore on his hand cut. This was later contracted to Akure. Omoloju then enstooled himself as Alakunre. The people in other section of Akure, the Isinkan whose head Chief is Aralepo and Isolos headed by chief Osolo and whose traditions are distinct from those of the majority inhabitants also represent earlier settlers on this site of the present Akure. Akure, to the present kingdom, its origin is traced to life ancestral of the Yoruba race. The first Oba of the Akure was the grandson of Oduduwa, his father was Ekun, who died when he was conceived and Oduduwa took care of his posthumous grandchild. When the child

grew up, he played about in the courtyard of Oduduwa at Ile-Ife and these people there called him Omoekun (son of Tiger), the epithet by which Deji of Akure was later known, hence Ekun (Tiger), became the traditional symbol of the Deji. When Omo-Ekun grew up, he lived at Inanmu near Ife, where all the children and grandchildren of Oduduwa lived. Before the immigration of the prince and grandson of Oduduwa, Omo-Ekun, to undergo a seven-day endurance test during which he killed an Eda rat with rattle (Aja) in a small house without windows where he was put. Thereafter, Omo-Ekun was called Ajapada i.e. Afi aja pa eku eda the endurance test is still commemorated at Akure in annual Ile Ifunta when the Oba withdraws into an inner part of the palace for seven days. When Oduduwas children were leaving Ife. Ajapada demanded from his grandfather gifts such as he had given to other children. Oduduwa who had already distributed what he had, however gave his grandson a garment of medicine (ewuu ogele) which he wore on hunting expeditions and a beaded crown. Ajapada left Ife in company of his uncle the Oba of Benin but stayed behind in Osu near Ilesha before he moved to Igbolaye Efon-Alaaye Ajapada did not stay for a long time because he involved himself in trouble with the neighbouring Obas. Preceded by a hunter named Olojada who accompanied him from Ife, Ajapada moved in a south easterly direction until he reached the present site of Akure where he built a house at present site of Chief Oyes compound near the palace. He, being a seasoned hunter, killed an elephant on the spot known as Ori Oriri now at Oba Adesida Road/Araromi junction and for this act of bravery; the people he met at Akure soon took note of his intrepidity thereby nicknaming him Asodeboyede he who hunts has arrived from Oye. The influence of Ajapada Asodeboyede grew and soon overshadowing that of Alakunre Omoloju. Conflicts soon ensued but Alakunre realized that Asodeboye was more militant person with many followers, he surrendered. The Akures gave Asodeboyede the preference to be the first Oba of Akure. The present title of arose from an episode which linked akure dynasty with that of Ijesa. Owa Atakunmosa, the seventh ruler of Ijesa land journeyed to Benin City when he spent some years in exile and on his way to Benin; he passed through Akure and gave his daughter in marriage to Ajapada Oriya. When owa returned, passing through Akure through Akure again he said that his daughter had given birth to a child and he joyfully placed the child on his laps, putting on him a beaded crown and gave him a name Olu fadeji when Olufadeji ascended the

throne of Akure, he preferred to use the shortened form of his new name Deji instead of Ajapada and it is thus that his successors were known and called to this day. He also assumed the name of his mothers father Atakunmosa as his official name. The presence in Akure of a sizezable of Benin origin known as Ado-Akure living at Igisan, Eyinke and Oritagun quarter was an evidence of the close relationship which existed between Akure and Benin kingdom.
