Healthcare Business Alliance Newsletter (Spring 2012)

Healthcare Day 2011

On Friday, October 28th 2011, the Healthcare Business Alliance hosted its annual Healthcare Day Conference. Over 60 students attended, with attendees coming from programs across Georgetown and neighboring schools. The day kicked off with Fred Mischler (MSB MBA 2013), from Abbott Laboratories, who shared with students his experience as a marketing director for HUMIRA. Students also heard from Jason Yu, from Accenture, who opened students up to customer relationship management systems for healthcare organizations. The day featured two keynote speakers: Paul Keckley (adjunct professor at the Health Sciences and Nursing School) from Deloitte and Wil Yu from Health and Human Services. Later, students met with Brian Tham (MSB MBA 2010) from Human Genome Sciences to discuss operations in Biotechnology. In addition to guest speakers, the day included a panel of Georgetown Alums from MSB, Andrew Yang (Potomac Labs), Michael Consilvio (Ortho Clinical Diagnostics) and Kirsten Grubbs (Intuitive Surgical) and recent graduates from Georgetown School of Health Science and Nursing Tia Chase (PwC) and Jonathan Duxbury (Accenture). The day concluded with the COO of Georgetown University Medical Center, Miriam Markowitz, who provided insights into the trends in provider healthcare.

HBA Members Team up with Consulting Teams

To develop practical work experience, HBA members and their fellow MSB classmates enrolled in a course centered on management consulting in the healthcare industry. In the course, students develop an overview of the theory and practice of healthcare consulting in the context of payer/provider services (for health systems, employer groups, and health plans), life sciences consulting (for pharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology companies), and business planning and organizational development services (for varied clients). The class is led by a Dr. Ryung Suh (MSB MBA 2003) and his colleague at Atlas Research John Gilmore. Dr. Suh is the CEO of Atlas Research, a research and consulting firm specializing in highly visible, complex projects for the U.S. Government, corporate clients, and non-profit organizations with an emphasis on strategic planning, research and analytic services, project management and program support, and public policy development for healthcare systems and the healthcare industry.
