II B.Tech II Semester (R05) Supplementary April/May 2012 Examinations PROBABILITY & STATISTICS (Common to Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Biotechnology)
Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ***** 1. (a) Out of 10 girls in a class, 3 have blue eyes. If 2 of the girls are chosen at random. What is the probability that (i) Both have blue eyes. (ii) At least one has blue eyes. (b) State and prove Bayes theorem 2. (a) A random variable x has the following distribution x 1 2 3 4 8 9 P(x) k 3k 5k 7k 9k 11k Determine (i) k (ii) Mean (iii) P(x 3). (b) If X is a continuous random variable and Y=aX+b. Prove that E[Y]=aE[X]+b and V(Y)=a2V(X). 3. (a) Define poisson distribution and find its variance and mean. (b) Given that the mean heights of students in a class is 159 cms with standard deviation of 20 cms. Find how many students heights lie between 150 cms and 170 cms if there are 100 students in a class. 4. Samples of size 2 are taken from the population 4,8,12,16,20,24 without replacement. Find (i) The mean of the population. (ii) Standard deviation of the population. (iii) The mean of the sampling distribution of means. (iv) The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means. Max Marks: 80

5. (a) The mean and standard deviation of a population are 11,795 and 14,054 respectively. What can one assert that 95% confidence about the maximum error if and n=50. (b) Suppose that we observe a random variable having the binomial distribution and get X success in n trails. (a) Show that is an unbaised estimate of the binomial parameter p (b) Show that is not an unbaised estimate of the binomial parameter p.

6. (a) Write short note on type I and type II error. (b) A lady stenographer claims that she can take dictation at the rate of 120 words per minute. Can we reject her claim on the basis of 100 trails in which she demonstrates a mean of 116 words with a standared deviation of 15 words. 7. (a) Two horses A and B were tested according to the time (in seconds) to run a particular track with the following results. Horse A 28 30 32 33 33 29 34 Horse B 29 30 30 24 27 29 Test whether the two horses have the same running capacity. (b) Two independent sample of 8 and 7 items respectively had the following values of the variables Sample I 9 11 13 11 16 10 12 14 Sample II 11 13 11 14 10 8 10 Do the estimates of population variance differ significantly.
