Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel

Celebrating the Fourth Sunday of Easter

Scripture He is the stone rejected by the builders, which becomes the cornerstone. (Acts 4:11) Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, his mercy endures forever. (Psalm 118:1) See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. (1 John 3:1) I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, ...and I will lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:14,15) Reflection How does the resurrection of Jesus change your life? How is it possible for mortal beings to become know as children of God? Are all welcomed by Jesus and the Father regardless of their background? How do you follow Jesus and lay down your life and take it up again? The fruits of evangelization are changed lives and a changed worldholiness and justice, spirituality and peace. The validity of our having accepted the Gospel does not only come from what we feel or what we know; it comes also from the way we serve others, especially the poorest, the most marginal, the most hurting, the most defenseless, and the least loved. An evangelization that stays inside ourselves is not an evangelization into the Good News of Jesus Christ.1

The Gospels: Jesus Prays for Unity

Jesus Prays for Unity Among the Disciples by Amy Miller
There are three significant elements in the prayer that Jesus prayed for His disciples, as recorded in John 17:9-19. The first is the recognition that these men had been selected by God and they belonged to God. The second is the request for unity among these men, the same unity shared between the Father and the Son. The third is the petition of protection for the twelve disciples. All of Jesus final instructions recorded in the preceding chapters were then sealed by this prayer. In this part of the series on Jesus Prayer for His Disciples, the focus will be on the necessity for unity among the twelve disciples. Unity, as spoken by David in the psalms, has incredible value in the eyes of God. As David said, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! (Psalm 133:1) Jesus knew the Scriptures well, and perhaps was reminded of this psalm when He prayed for His disciples. Jesus knew that if they were unified amongst each other and with God, they would be purposeful and effective witnesses for Him. In order for the gospel to be carried throughout the world, those who carried that message had to have one heart and mind. They all had to share the responsibility of not only the mission but the message. Jesus told them that their greatest testimony to the world was going to be their love for one another and their spiritual like-mindedness. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:35) This love for one another included not only a mutual respect as men but also care and compassion as fellow eyewitnesses to the ministry of Jesus Christ. Unity among the disciples was critical. In John 17:11-13 is recorded the second part of Jesus prayer: Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. Jesus had come to the end of His ministry on earth. Soon he was going to be handed over to Roman officials and crucified. He knew that He would be raised to life again, but He also knew that He was going back to the Father. This meant that the disciples were going to be left here on earth to carry out their mission. Jesus prayed that they would be kept, or guarded, so that they could experience the same unity as what was shared between the Father and the Son. They were to know and understand the Fathers will, and obey it. They were to consider the sick, the lame, the blind, the fatherless, and the widowed. They were to desire to see mankind restored and reconciled just as Jesus had desired. To do these things meant to submit to the authority of God. In so doing, they were going to be able to lead all men to the salvation of Jesus Christ. During Jesus ministry, He walked with His twelve disciples and taught them about kingdom living. He performed miracles before them, and He spoke the words of the Father to them. Jesus completed every task that the Father had sent Him to do, including preparing these twelve men for the path that lay ahead of them. Not one of them had been lost, or destroyed, except whom Jesus called the son of perdition, or the heir of eternal destruction. He was speaking of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer. The other Eleven, along with Matthias who replaced Judas as one of the disciples, remained united both before and after Jesus resurrection. It was this unity that enabled them to spread the gospel throughout the then-known world within 30 years after Jesus ascension. Because of their efforts, the message of the gospel is still heard all around the world today. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

Think Like a Man

By Kurt Jensen Catholic News Service NEW YORK (CNS) -- Four couples learn lessons about maturity and mutual respect in "Think Like A Man" (Screen Gems), a sprawling romantic comedy based on comic Steve Harvey's best-selling book of relationship advice. Fast-moving quips and frank talk about how men and women still can't communicate in an era of seemingly unlimited sexual freedom keep the tone light. Since it implicitly treats premarital sex and the option of cohabitation as a given, however, the picture offers no genuine critique of this supposed freedom such as would necessarily be posed by those adhering to scriptural values. Still, Harvey's advice is nothing you haven't heard from your grandma, if you have one who dispenses pithy wisdom: All decisions have consequences. Men should have goals and be providers and role models for children. And everyone needs to be honest and realistic. "Times have changed," Harvey tells women, "but your playbook hasn't. Until you get into the mindset of a man, you will never win in the game of love." It's not that difficult, he insists. "We're kind of like dogs. If you pet us, we'll be loyal to you forever." The film follows the romantic adventures of Lauren and Dominic (Taraji P. Henson and Michael Ealy), Zeke and Mya (Romany Malco and Meagan Good), Michael and Candace (Terrence J and Regina Hall) and Jeremy and Kristen (Jerry Ferrara and Gabrielle Union). Kevin Hart provides comic relief as Cedric, who's about to get a divorce -- or so, at least, he thinks. Lauren and Dominic's pairing faces the largest hurdle, since she's a hard-charging corporate executive and he's a struggling chef who has to deceive her in order for them to date. Single mom Candace must struggle with Michael's deep attachment to his domineering mother, Zeke is up against Mya's "90-day rule" for sex, and Kristen tries to make an adult out of commitment-shy Jeremy, whose lifestyle is still redolent of the frat house. The men eventually discover what the women have been up to and try to regain control by adapting Harvey's advice to their own purposes. But they fail because they employ deception. Unvarnished, earthy, sometimes over the top but never crude, the film manages to deliver a reassuring -- if secular-minded -- homily about the confusing process of looking for, and finding, true love. The film contains implied premarital relationships, a scene of marijuana use, fleeting profanity, pervasive crude language and sexual banter and a single use of the N-word. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -adults.

#6 DID YOU KNOW? ?

Test Your Knowledge of Abuse Prevention: True or False?
True or false: It is common for both child and adult victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone about the abuse. True. It is common for victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone. When the person was assaulted as a child, he or she may wait years or decades. The reasons for this are numerous: victims may want to deny the fact that someone they trusted could do this to them; they may want to just put it behind them; they may believe the myth that they caused the assault by their behavior; or they may fear how other people will react to the truth. For more information on learning how you can help ensure the safety of children contact your chapel staff or visit the web site of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA: www.milarch.org.
