IEP draft storyboards for review v1.

0 August 31, 2011 Comments were made by: SLC - Sara Cloutier SEC - Susan Catts DR - David Richter Comments in blue represent current audio/narrator text Slide 1 IDEA should be pronounced as each letter plus the year 2004 (SLC) How long is it estimated for a student to complete this module? (DR) What does GL button do? (DR) Slide 2 Should learners be given the ability to take the knowledge checks as many times as they want? (SLC) Slide 3 Slide 4 Is it possible to have the first go through be mandated as step 1, step 2, etc. and then if learners wish to go back to any one section, they can do so after the entire module is finished. (SLC) What is the rationale for only playing the audio associated with this slide the first time the content is accessed? (DR) Slide 5 This slide seems to be out of order. It seems to me that it should appear ahead of the introduction of the IEP content...slide 2 (SEC) Slide 6 Slide 7 Audio-Why have an IEP meeting? One simple answer: to ensure a learners success (SLC) The sentence should read Why have an IEP meeting? The IEP meeting is to ensure that a learner has a pathway to success. (SLC) Collaboration is the means to enabling a student to be successful. (SEC) Slide 8 Also, evaluation results and special education placement are typically discussed, unless they were covered in a separate meeting prior to this.

Since this is the initial meeting, it is expected that all assessment and measurement results will be discussed during the IEP meeting.(SLC) Slide 9 Slide 10 Slide 11 Slide 12 Slide 13 Slide 14 Slide 15 Slide 16 Slide 17 Would it help to identify the slide as letter 1 so that learners coming back to this area will be able to locate the two letters faster? Meeting Invitation 1 (SLC) Slide 18 Slide 19 what is a still-shot animation? (DR) if a meeting in the cafeteria was not suitable, are there specific examples of what can be done to make a classroom or other room suitable (i.e. the principals office)? (DR) Slide 20 Slide 21 Slide 22 Slide 23 Slide 24 Im assuming that the bolded phrases will not appear this way in the final slide production (SEC)

Slide 25

ensure examples are what one would find in an actual school environment (DR)

Slide 26 Slide 27 Change the word Ideal to Model since IDEA 2004 is such a part of this program it may be read as something that is legally mandated. (SLC) Suggestions: I dont like the word handful...too colloquial...prefer something like group be used; in several slides the phrase the law is used...I suggest that you add the phrase IDEA 2004 before the word law in some cases as a reminder that that is the law that drives the IEP; (SEC) The sentence beginning with Each school district should consider.... is not accurate and should be removed. The law defines who shall attend. (SEC/SLC) Slide 28 Under the LEA Representatives role/3rd bullet - the slide currently states ...be knowledgeable about the resources within the LEA. It should say be knowledgeable about the resources within the community in which the Local Education Agency resides. (SEC) Slide 29 Slide 30 This could be any of the school staff members listed earlier, but is most often the LEA Rep or a special education teacher. The team lead must be someone who has the authority to ok the distribution of funds and who can make the decisions that the funds are needed in this situation. Thus the Team lead would be the Principal, Vice-Principal or Special Education teacher (when given the authority by the Principal) (SLC) Change title of this slide to The IEP Team Lead (SLC) Slide 31 Change title of this slide to The IEP Team Lead (SLC) Slide 32 Many schools refuse to hold a scheduled IEP meeting if the parent arrives with an advocate or attorney a highly suspect practice on the school's part and one that is bound to convey that the school has a questionable agenda. Could we state this as, Schools are often faced with a parent(s) who feel they need the support of an advocate or attorney. This situation is acceptable and the team should welcome any additional people the parents bring since it is their legal right to do so.(SLC) This may be contrary to what was in my initial content, but this is what should be in the documentation.

Many times, repeated IEP meetings are scheduled when one would suffice. The most common cause of repeated meetings is the failure of district personnel to deal properly with disagreements as they arise. ? ...common causes of repeated meetings is failure of district personnel to deal properly with internal disagreements and the lack of providing a meeting time that enables all team members to attend. (SLC) when all the Ground Rule bullets are revealed, this slide seems awfully cluttered. Would it make sense to have Dont on one slide and Dos on another? (DR) Suggested change to narration: 4th bullet/2nd line...replace disabled student to read student with a disability. The industry is sensitive about this and doesnt like using the phrase as stated in the slide. (SEC) Slide 33 Slide 34 Slide 35 And evaluation results, describing what was found in the formal assessment process. Please insert the phrase and informal after the phrase in the formal (SLC) Slide 36 Slide 37 To be considered eligible, the student must meet the criteria for one of the 13 disabilities defined by IDEA. Anytime there is reference to IDEA it should have the
year attached as well since the laws under IDEA 2004 are different than the laws put forth under the first IDEA act. (SLC)

Slide 38 Slide 39 Slide 40 Slide 41 So it would be a miracle... Could this be stated in a more positive manner such as, I would like to see Derek succeed and giving him the goal of being sent to the office only once during a week would be a great improvement for him. (SLC/DR) The animation looks interesting and look forward to seeing how it will play out as the student proceeds through the question. (SEC) Slide 42 Slide 43

Slide 44 I suggest that Derek also be introduced. As I was going along in the case study, I began to wonder what grade he was in and what was his profile....doesnt need to be very much, but would help to frame the process for the student. (SEC) Slide 45 Slide 46 Change the term Chairperson to Team Lead in the 3rd bullet Mrs. Relaford, in a moment, well talk about what were going to do differently here at school to help Derek reach these goals. Change to-In a moment, lets talk about the steps we are going to take at school and at home to help Derek reach these goals.(SLC) Slide 47 Slide 48 Slide 49 Slide 50 Slide 51 Slide 52 Slide 53 If a major change in placement is suggested, such as moving the child from a regular classroom setting to a self-contained special education building, parents will likely need more explanation and reassurance. The meeting chairperson or LEA Rep should be skilled at explaining the benefits to the student of any proposed change in placement. Suggest that this sentence be restated as follows: The changes decided upon during the development of an IEP range from modifying assignments to the presence of a full time paraprofessional. Parents must agree to and understand all accommodations/services prior to the implementation of these services. When a parent signs the IEP document, they are stating that they agree to all of these (SLC) Slide 54 Slide 55

Slide 56 Slide 57 Slide 58 Slide 59 Following Up on the Initial IEP Meeting. In this lesson, youll learn the basics about annual review meetings, changes to the IEP, and implementing the IEP. Suggest that the list in the gray box be re-stated as follows: Identify Key Aspects of IEP Implementation, Describe how to Change an IEP without an IEP meeting, Describe the Purpose of an Annual Review Meeting (SLC) Slide 60 Slide 61 Slide 62 Slide 63 If the order is changed on Slide 59, adjust other slides accordingly.. (SLC) Slide 64 IEP review meetings must be held at least how often? Change to Review of the entire IEP must be held how often? Annually (SLC) Slide 65 Slide 66 I agree that a PDF of the module should be made available for those who wish to print off the content (DR) (SEC) Does this module require a Glossary and if so, would it be included here? (DR) There should also be a link: IDEA 2004, http://idea.ed.gov/ NCLB:http://www.ed.gov/esea National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilitieshttp://nichcy.org/ Slide 67 Once the student has reached this slide, are there directions as what to do next (i.e. - close this browser window and return to )? (DR)
