Tessie Hutchinson: The winner of the lottery. Always usually excited to participate in the lottery until her familys name is drawn. Protests that it is then unfair Old Man Warner: Oldest man in village has participated in 77 lotteries Mr. Summers: The man who conducts the lottery Bill Hutchinson: Picks the paper at first but then for the second drawing shows that his wife picked the paper

Conflict Setting
Man vs. society Man vs. tradition Man vs. man A beautiful sunny day in a village. June 27th The time span is between 10am and noon

Irony
The word lottery makes is seem like people are going to get a prize. The Sunny day makes it feel like the event is a happy one Old Man warner hears that the north village said they were going to discontinue the lottery he says they are going to start living in caves next (the lottery is just as barbaric). Mr Graves name is super ironic. Mr. Summers name is ironic as well

Foresha
The stones: The school children pick up smooth round stones to put in a pile before the lottery begins. The black box: In a sense the villagers were scared of the box and what it held. The villagers hesitated when mr.summers asked for help with the box

Symbols
The Black box: Represents the lottery and the tradition that the villagers blindly follow The Lottery: represents any action or behavior that is passed down to the next generation and accepted and followed without question
