Does the .pat file contain custom patterns? Microstation comes with the standard Autocad patterns as cell libraries as listed below in my previous post. If the files are custom, or not a part of the standard Microstation cells the easiest work around (depending on how many patterns/cells) would be to place each patern in the DWG file. Copy that information into a DGN file and create a new .cel library with Microstation. In the mean time, I will think about other routes or options. HTH, Brian

Hi Brian, I have been trying to import Autocad .pat files for use in Microstation but keep coming up with an error

Pattern/Graphics Issue - MicroStation V8 2004 Edition F... when trying to use them.

I manually placed the downloaded Autocad .pat files into ...Workspace/system/cell. I then try and access them via the pattern tool and it gives me an error saying "Invalid cell Library.... Any ideas? I have tried searching on the net, but no answers here.

PhilI had to delete everything and anything proprietary. The detail sheets do not have anything referenced in them. I did attach a detail sheet to copy over the details, then deleted the reference, and compressed the file. I imported the sheet model instead of referencing it and copying the details over and it seems to be working for now. Thanks for you help! ~christina

There is something that appears to be missing in the design. There is a sheet model (Sheet 6) and a design model (Default), with nothing in the design model. The sheet model has three levels in it, and quite a number of "no longer associated" regions on the level URS-DETAIL. That "no longer associated" elements indicate that there may have been something else in the sheet model (or design model... or an attached reference) previously. Was there?

BrianThat is true, however, even though the patterns have the same name, in my case "GRAVEL", they are not the same from the .pat to the .cel. I've attached a jpg that shows what I mean. For almost every other pattern it would not matter, because they look the same regardless (if I remember correctly). I don't know why the GRAVEL pattern looks different. Thanks for your help! ~christina

Microstation comes with the basic AutoCAD pat files as .cel files located in your local /workspace/system/cell/ _______.cel Using this library allows you to use the "AutoCAD" patterns in a Microstation format. HTH, Brian

This is from Microstation Help: "The Pattern option menu in the Pattern Area settings window lists the patterns in the DWG pattern file "areapat.pat". This file contains a DWG pattern definition for each pattern cell in the supplied cell library "areapat.cel". To select a different DWG pattern file, key in its full path with filename in Pattern File or click the adjacent magnifying glass icon to browse the file system. A corresponding DWG pattern file is supplied for each of the supplied sample pattern cell libraries, such as "archpat.cel", "areapat.cel", "geompa.cel", "igespats.cel", "linepa.cell", and "utilpat.cel". Although these DWG pattern files have the same filename as their cell library counterparts, their extension is ".pat."

It is difficult to explain.... I am attaching a file that will hopefully help explain this better. We created details in AutoCAD a while back and transfered them to Microstation. Since then we have been copying details from the file or creating new ones in Microstation using the areapa.pat or the archpa.pat. to match what was done in AutoCAD. Never had a problem with this process. Now all of a sudden, I am copying those details into another file and the pattern goes crazy. I try to create a patterned element in the file, and the pattern does the same thing. Regards, ~christina

I cannot really see where different releases of MicroStation would cause anything along those lines... but getting a sample test case and a step-by-step scenario might help produce some possible things to look into.

Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem and it doesn't matter what option I use. I'm not in a 3D file, I'm referencing in details that were made with the same standards and copying into the active model. I've done this 50 times and never had a problem till today. As of 2 weeks ago I now have 2 versions of Microstation installed on my computer (V8 2004 & V8i), would they be conflicting? TIA, christina

Please don't take this as a criticism of Microstation, I have a similar issue with acad.

Anyway, the work-around is to create an object (I use the blue _construction layer for non-plotting purposes) and then hatch that by using the fill. So, when using a pattern, this problem only seems to arise with the by element, and by point method of patterns. Thanks for your comments and offering to look at the file. However, I was hoping it would just be a case of changing a display or scale related setting.

Could you post the actual file, too?

Posted by kevinwhitehouse on Tue, Jan 13 2009 3:58 PM

Is the file 3D? Could that be the problem?

Posted by wannabe on Tue, Jan 13 2009 3:44 PM

Please take a look at the attached file, and if you don't mind, please offer your thoughts and explanations as to the problem. Both sets of pattern were used with all the same attributes, and selected by element. The one on the right has a slight inaccuracy; quite major actually. Blue patterns should be the same.
