Reduced mobility results in reduced quality of life. The combination of social isolation, limited life space and choice, learned dependence (e.g. requiring someone to push a manual wheelchair), frustration, and limited autonomy likely contributes to symptoms of depression and exacerbation of cognitive impairment and undesirable behaviors. It should also be noted that this chain reaction of symptoms resulting from reduced mobility are also observed in other patient groups beyond older adults (e.g. disabled children, adults with traumatic brain injury, etc.), thus broadening the scope of these problems and requirements from potential solutions. If we can provide these users with some level of independence, irrespective of ability, without placing the person or others at unreasonable risk, then it may be possible to reverse some symptoms of depression and cognitive impairment and improve quality of life The proposed system is a stand-alone image-processing engine. This engine is capable of controlling the movements of a vehicle based on the finger tip movements of the user. The system enables mobile vehicle to perceive their environment in a small form-factor, low-power, and high-capability package. Image sequences are sent to a Processing unit, where the data is processed against a trained textures using mat lab.

Tracking Finger tip movements Continous frames from a normal webcam are extracted by matlab. A frame is subjected for 2D median filtering. It performs median filtering of the matrix A in two dimensions. Each output pixel contains the median value in the M-by-N neighborhood around the corresponding pixel in the input image. MEDFILT2 pads the image with zeros on the edges, so the median values for the points within [M N]/2 of the edges may appear distorted. The corresponding extracted frame is processed to get the centroid where a group of white pixels persist and its position is also obtained. According to the positions extracted the corresponding actions for vehicle movements is transmitted to the embedded system through ZIGBEE.
