HP Network Node Manager i software and HP Network Node Manager i Advanced software

Data sheet

HP Network Node Manager i (HP NNMi) software automates the process of developing and continually updating a hyper-accurate topology of your physical and virtual network services, and the complex relationships between them. It then uses that topology as the basis for intelligent root cause analysis to enhance network availability and performance. HP NNMi provides a vast amount of automation, including event correlation and automated monitoring of your network, to improve the efficiency and productivity of your IT staff. HP NNMi, HP NNMi Advanced, and the NNMi Smart Plug-Ins (NNM iSPIs) provide powerful out-of-the-box capabilities to enable your network operations team to more securely and efficiently manage a network of any size.
IP networks and applications hosted on virtualized servers have become essential business enablers for revenuegenerating transactions, as well as for supporting enduser communication services such as email and IP telephony. Due to this strategic reliance on networks, companies cannot afford any network downtime. Businesses must stay competitive by making smart network management investments such as automation to do more with less. But even with automation, network operations teams can have difficulty finding a solution that incorporates scalability to accommodate all environments, multitenancy capabilities to more securely manage multiple customer or sites, low cost of ownership, intelligent automation, and the ability to discover and monitor a dynamically changing virtualized infrastructure. Most tools today cover one or two of these capabilities, but not all. However, HP NNMi provides the benefits of an enterpriseclass network management solution with high scalability, multitenancy, low cost of ownership, intelligent automation, and virtualization capabilitiesa combination that enables you to reduce the cost of delivering high network availability and service delivery. The HP NNM iSPIs extend the device and protocol support capabilities of HP NNMi and HP NNMi Advanced to enable the management of a wide range of network devices, services, and facilities. The HP NNM iSPIs provide technologyspecific awareness that helps identify problems quickly to reduce the mean time to repair (MTTR) and make your network team more efficient. The various HP NNM iSPIs include: HP NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics HP NNM iSPI Performance for Traffic HP NNM iSPI Performance for Quality Assurance HP NNM iSPI for IP Telephony HP NNM iSPI for IP Multicast HP NNM iSPI for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) HP NNM iSPI Network Engineering Toolset

Innovative technology

Modern architecture drives extreme scalability

The HP NNMi software is a multithreaded application built on an innovative ntier architecture composed of leadingedge technologies that takes advantage of multiple multicore CPUs. HP NNMi offers the performance of a thick client, as well as the universal access benefits of a Web application. HP NNMis stateoftheart spiral discovery process uses fast node finding combined with an iterative multipass process for indepth device configuration and connectivity discovery. This discovery process enables accurate monitoring for other HP NNMi management components such as root cause analysis (RCA) while enabling accurate monitoring of dynamically changing and virtualized environments. HP NNMi offers singleserver scalability that accommodates smallscale to enterpriseclass environments, as well as distributed architecture capabilities that allow flexibility in its implementation. The scalability of HP NNMi, along with its security groupings and multitenancy capabilities, allows you to manage multiple customers, departments, or sites per instance of HP NNMi.

Event pipeline and causal engine provide deterministic root cause analysis
HP NNMi includes modules for automated event correlation and RCA. The module for event correlation is called the event pipeline, which contains multiple efficient processes that act on the event stream to correlate and condition events for the causal engine. The causal engine is a virtual machine that offers continual analysis of conditions of monitored objects. It relies on the spiral discovery process to dynamically adapt to topology changes. Finally, the causal engine provides automated and deterministic RCA (as opposed to probabilistic RCA) to reduce MTTR and increase operator efficiency while allowing you to define your relevant and serviceimpacting events.

Workflow-based navigation promotes operational efficiency Figure 2: The new HP NNMi 9.10 user interface has been specifically designed to increase the productivity of your network operators.

Innovative functionality

Workflowbased navigation promotes operational efficiency

HP NNMi has been specifically designed to increase the productivity of your network operators. The new user console allows you to determine the root cause of a problem more quickly, increasing the efficiency of your operator to faster resolve customer issues and therefore improve customer satisfaction. Actions are now easier to execute with rightclick menus, a breadcrumb history for easily retracing analysis steps, and improved list management features. The HP NNMi Analysis Pane reduces the number of clicks required to get to key information, including availability and thumbnail performance graphs (with NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics). The new GUI was designed around an exceptionbased management paradigm associated with security groups and tenants, which enables operators to quickly focus on priority incidents within their realm of responsibility. The features of the HP NNMi exceptionbased management paradigm include: Security groups and tenants that enable you to more securely focus HP NNMi views on specific management domains, and important nodes and interfaces within those domains

Outofthebox groupings for critical interfaces and nodes that provide immediate visibility to highpriority exceptions and reduce configuration time Key incidents that can be aligned with your environment, allowing you to define your relevant serviceimpacting events Incident lifecycle management that enables you to focus on assigned open incidents

Integrated solution
HP NNMi features an SOAbased Web service integration interface that allows for flexible integrations. HP NNMi comes with outofthebox integrations with other HP software products (such as HP Network Automation and HP Operations Orchestration), as well as numerous thirdparty vendor applications for seamless workflows that increase productivity and efficiency.

Performance is the new fault

With the resiliency of todays IP networks, fault management and availability management are not enough. Network performance problems are more likely than network device failures are to affect service delivery within a business. Therefore, an effective management solution should incorporate network performance management encompassing device, interface, and link performance, as well as application flow data and IP servicelevel agreement (IP SLA) type tests. Network performance management is essential, and how you incorporate it into your solution is equally critical.

Performance data in the context of topology Figure 3: HP NNMi 9.10 new user interface and path health performance report

Management solutions must drive increased productivity and efficiency to be valuable. Disparate fault and performance tools or loosely integrated solutions require operators to toggle back and forth between separate systems. The HP NNM iSPIs for Performance are addon modules that extend HP NNMis ability to enable unified fault, availability, and performance management in a common context. Performance data in the context of network topology provides a unique point of view of fault monitoring as the NNM iSPIs for Performance drive status and state analysis of monitored devices. Automatic baselining to identify normal usage patterns across the environment speeds implementation, cuts costs, and quickly highlights performance anomalies, while the extended data retention period provides detailed performance data from realtime to longterm forecast and trending in the context of network topology. All of this allows operators to predict problems and enable preemptive fixes.

Path health performance report

A particularly powerful example of unified fault and performance management is illustrated by the path health performance report. HP NNMi is able to calculate and visualize the Layer 2 and Layer 3 path between any two endpoints within the network. Then, in concert, HP NNM iSPI Performance for Metrics produces the path health performance report for all the devices and interfaces along that same path. The HP NNM iSPI Performance for Traffic allows an understanding of the types of application traffic flowing over these interfaces, and the HP NNM iSPI for Quality Assurance can notify operators if IP SLA or IP SLA type tests configured for this path are performing outside of acceptable ranges. This allows a unified workflow to troubleshoot performance problems between endpoints, sites, and application pairs in a more secure fashion.
