Activity N 2 Reread the six abstracts in the file and identify the INTRODUCTION or scene setting section. Write the first and the last word of the section. Activity N 3

The two sets or groups of sentences below were the constituents of two abstracts. The order in which they were originally presented has been altered. Order each group into a coherent whole. Use the boxes to sum up your decisions. Group 1 a) Parents have gained rights as consumers to compete in the market, but are unable to exercise their rights as citizens to cooperate to improve education for all. b) The National Curriculum makes schools and teachers accountable to central government, and restricts their ability to respond to consumer demand. c) This paper argues that the ability of parents to exercise this right is limited by a range of factors from geographical location to cultural capital. d) Since 1988, the British government has enacted legislation in education which purports to increase the power of the consumer-the parent- and to make the educational producers more responsive to their demands. e) Overall, the legislation increases the power of central government and reduces the power of the educational establishment, but enhances choice for only a few parents. f) Direct funding and open enrolment mean that schools have to attract customers, and parents, in theory, have new rights of choice.
