RIVER REGION:
The Niagara River, carrying the water from the
upper four Great Lakes, exudes power. Its also the
lifeblood for a host of fish species that call
Niagara their home - including salmon, trout, bass,
muskie, walleye and more. Fishing activities below
Niagara Falls exist 365 days a year, with some of the
best trout fishing in the world taking place during
the late fall, winter and early spring. Lewiston and
Youngstown are both excellent spots for charter
activity or for people to haul their own boats. These
quaint historic villages are perfect getaways to fish
or frolic on the local waters and relax in town.
LAKE REGION:
Lake Ontario offers up one of the finest trout and
salmon fisheries on the Great Lakes. Wilson and
Olcott are two ports that have gained excellent
reputations in the world of fishing. Winning LOC
Derby fish came from famous the Niagara Bar
throughout the last decade. Last year, all three
Grand Prize catches came from Niagara USA - the
first time that's ever been accomplished! In 2004,
Olcott produced a new state record steelhead - a 31
pound, three ounce fish that shattered the
previous record by more than four pounds!
Off the mouth of the Niagara River on the Niagara
Bar and to the east, spring and summer salmon
fishing is as good as it gets. Lets not forget the
excellent tributary fishing in places like 18 Mile
Creek and Burt Dam each Fall. Great fishing, great
access and great fun for the whole family!
CANAL REGION:
The Erie Canal is a blossoming recreational
waterway thats underrated by many. While its most
noted for boating and its historic value, fishing
can be very good for warm water fish species like
pike, bass, carp and panfish. Its also a great venue
to paddle a canoe or kayak - from Middleport to
North Tonawanda and all points in between. Ride a
bike or take a hike along the Towpath, too.
The Niagara River, Lake Ontario and Erie Canal all contribute handily to a long list of
outdoor activities that include but are not limited to fishing, hunting, boating,
canoeing, kayaking, sailing, jet skiing and more. Niagara USA offers a true outdoor
experience for the whole family.
FALLS REGION:
The area above Niagara Falls, which includes the upper Niagara River, is also a
respectable fish mecca. This shallower water body focuses on warm
water fish like bass and muskellunge. Reel in that fish of a lifetime or soak in some of
natures splendor. Niagara is also an excellent area for birding, recognized
internationally as an Important Bird Area. A Niagara River Greenway Corridor is
currently being developed from Buffalo to Youngstown.
