detectors

We are pleased to offer these APD photoreceivers for ultralow-light-level detection. These photoreceivers consist of a high-gain avalanche photodiode, followed by a low-noise amplier and internal bias supply all in a compact moduleno need for separate high-voltage input. We optimize the noise performance of these APDs while enhancing the overall sensitivity of the APD photoreceiver with the inclusion of a linear amplier. The amplifier is AC-coupled to allow measurements of nW of modulation on large CW signals. The result is an APD and amplier combination with a low noise-equivalent-power as low as 1.6 pW/Hz (typical) with high conversion gain. The APD gain is adjustable so that you can optimize your signal-to-noise ratio for your particular optical power.

For your convenience, these APD photoreceivers have a built-in temperature-compensation bias circuit so you dont need to worry about small temperature changes compromising your measurements. And, the DC current in the APD is limited so as to reduce damage to the amplier and APD due to excessive currents. These APD photoreceivers include both single-ended and differential outputs. When only one SMA output is used (single-ended), the photoreceiver operates like any of our other standard high-speed photoreceivers. When both SMA outputs are used (differential), each output is the opposite polarity of the other and can be used as a pair, e.g. on transmission line setups to minimize noise. These APD photoreceivers come in an RF-shielded package with their own power and monitor cables. Youll only need a 15-V power supply such as our Model 0901 (see page 144).

Femtowatt Photoreceivers
High >1011-V/W gain Powered by 9-V batteries Responsivity from the UV to the IR

detectors

Our Models 2151 and 2153 photoreceivers are ideal for ultra-low-light-level detection. When used with a chopper (page 68) and a lock-in amplier, these photoreceivers can easily achieve sensitivity levels in the femtowatt range. These photoreceivers provide amazing amounts of gain (up to 21011 V/W) and yet are easy to use, making the most difcult spectroscopy or uorescence experiment a snap. Theyre powered by a single 9-V battery, and dont require cooling or high-voltage power supplies. Theyre sensitive from the UV all the way to the IR, giving you the exibility to work wherever you get the most signal. Their 1-mm photodetector diameter even makes alignment easy.

The incredibly high-gain and low-noise performance of these photoreceivers is achieved by careful selection of the amplier-resistor pair. A large feedback resistor provides the high-gain values, while an ultraquiet amplier keeps noise to a minimum. Since the unit is battery powered, youll need only a single coaxial cable to connect the photodetector to other instruments. This eliminates ground loops, the most common source of noise. A non-conductive pad electrically isolates the case from the table, further eliminating noise pickup. You can easily switch among the three xed gain settings of 21011 (AC), 21010 (AC), and 21010 (DC) V/A. The two AC settings have a low-frequency roll-off at 30 Hz and eliminate DC drifts. To lter out unwanted background signals, you can also mount spike or band-pass lters directly on the photodetector with the lter-holder accessory (shown on page 146).

Technical Note

Why is NEP measured in W/ ?

We measure the voltage noise at the output of our photodetectors. This linear spectral density has units . We convert this to of V/ an equivalent optical noise by dividing by the responsivity (A/W) and the transimpedance gain (V/A). This yields an NEP with units of W/ .
